and as for J.Phelps no one ever found out where he went. He was fired a month before this rehearsal. Turned out he wasn't canadian at all, he was in fact from Haply-on-the wold near Royal Windsor and had put on the accent as he thought it made him sound more Jazz. You can see him in this video running over to band begging for his job back.
Around this time S.Forbes joined an australian saxophonist's quartet but quit after being asked to play a wobble board solo over Satellite.
As for N.Facey his fate was rather worse. Inspired by P.Gonsalves he packed his sax and headed off to Charlie Wrights with the intention of "going one better" but after fourteen choruses he was taken out the back by Zhenya and shot with old Kalashnikov kept from his military days.
I heard the reason the band broke up was as follows;
Shortly after this rehearsal K. Downes discovered marijuana and cheesecloth. He decided to grow his hair and a beard and went and formed a new group with J. Maddren and C. Gourlay.
T. Farmer a respectable young bassist settled down with a girl from his old college and was last seen walking through the barbican tunnel. Ask where he was going he replied, "I'm off to twang on her G-string".
and don't worry about the negative comments remember they was talking shit about ornette trane even bird and now they are eating it.. keep doing what ur doing as Empirical or otherwise, you got long careers ahead of you all...
How sad. This band in one year has gone from being the most important band to ever come out of the UK (what a joke), to becoming a complete laughing stock and falling apart and getting a new lineup in a year into its short lived history(losing its 2 stars), and proving that it was nothing more than overhype and a superficial attempt by courtney pine, high paid agents and publicists to fool the the UK jazz public. Where's all the great press now??? this proves the band had no substance. morons.
And furthermore, this band would be nowhere if it weren't signed to mr. lame himself Courtney Pine (yes, Mr. Jesus circle breather with the soprano, wow!) and his pr/management/agency machine.... once again I stick by the fact the music does not support the hype. neither does acoustic ladyland, polar bear, fraud... etc...
there nothing wrong with enjoying yourself while rehearsing, check out the jazz messengers researhal on youtube and maybe you will have changed your mind
again, could be a little more constructive in the criticism but it pains me also to see this representing the direction in UK jazz when american high school bands play with more disicpline, structure and even technical ability. You have to be wayne shorter or herbie hancock to get away with bullshit like this, and even they're pushing it.
mmmm. Mr funkiestmonk obviously has a few insecurity problems on display there. What I see is a hugely talented young band with an infectious character who are just playing and clearly enjoying every moment of it. They're certainly not claiming to represent any 'direction' in UK jazz. For what it's worth, these guys have bags of 'technical ability', ?(structure)?? The only 'bullshit' (very thoughtful musical term) on display is your comment.
according to all the hype Pend, empirical claims to be the 'most important band to ever come out of the UK' I can't think of anything more pretentious for such a young band to say. Tommy, you've put your video on utube, look around, people get knocked all the time. it's in the public domain stupid. and if you're as great as you think, you shouldn't have to edit people's comments who don't like you....
definitely the best stuff I've heard coming out of room 159! Empirical are the the future + Kit looks much better with short hair x

dude...
Why say this? In the public domain? We're just a young band trying to find a musical voice.
