@fosheimdet you'll get much better results if you let it sit for 30 days. If you're just looking to get ripped on something then go get a bottle of everclear :) Short answer is there will be plenty of alcohol after 10 days but it won't be nearly as good as it could be.

@compass305 i used the yeast he told me to use it was hard to filter out all the setament at the bottom with coffee filters but still there was shit at the bottom of my glass, but it got me drunk and was ready in two weeks it stopped bubbling
do you sell your wine? and do you give it your own name? and do you prefer red or white wine or you like both equal? sorry if too many questions it sound like you have a passion for it and that is great
@excop360 no, I don't sell it. In the US there are legal and tax concerns with selling alcohol and you have to be licensed. I give it away to friends all the time as gifts, especially in the holidays. I like sweet whites and soft reds. Nothing too dry. The wife and I both love Moscato and Lambrusco.
i recently opened a bottle of cheap wine and it was extremely fizzy. i filled up the glass one third the way and it bubbles right to the top. is that because there was too much carbon dioxide or is it normal to be so fizzy?

This is a Super Simple video. Merddyn i'm browsing your website as we speak. Would you believe I'm all the way from Sri Lanka, Where wine is a luxury drink. made me make my own wine at home. But we don't have Wine yeast in here. Have few question though. can i have your email please. thanks man.
why not just get a airlock.. it be so much easyer.. even tho the rubber makes it funny .. but at least you wont be spending more money then you dont haves to..
@odenkiller right there with ya man. You would be surprised how many people would spend $20 to avoid spending $1 on an air lock. A lot of people don't have access to homebrew stores.
It's not true then that when the alcohol reaches a certain level, the yeast dies off on it's own without having to freeze it? Also, wouldn't ultraviolet light work to kill the yeast so it doesn't have to be frozen? I'm not sure that freezing in a plastic container is a good idea. Freezing in plastic causes BPA to leach out of the plastic. Best to use glass and allow some space for expansion. What's your opinion?
I took my brew to the family reunion this weekend for a taste test. Everyone liked it. One of my cousins said he hates wine but liked my hooch lol. My uncle who always has an opinion about EVERYTHING said it was really good. That is a huge compliment since he has been making his own wine for more than 30 years. Just thought I would share the info.
ok I made a couple gallons of apple wine/ cider. I used simply apple from heb. I put in 6 cups sugar made into a syrup with 2 cups water. box of raisins, and some brown sugar. I did not add any water. racked after balloons went flat and again after stuff formed at bottom of bottle. The results are
1 glass and my wife is staggering badly. 2 glasses and i got blurred vision and feel about the same as if I drank a 12 pack of beer. Great stuff tastes good and has one hell of a kick.
@super0pimp That's AWESOME, but you might want to slow down there. You're in danger of violating the "drink till everything is funny" limit. lol. Told you guys, this stuff is simple. You can get as complicated as you want, but the basic concepts are very simple and easy to apply.
Thanks for a great video! I am just getting into making my own wines and I find it really fascinating. I want to make some banana wine, but I can't afford to buy all the equipment plus I don't want to wait 2 years. Can you help me out?
@rilee101 you can TRY it with bananas, but I doubt it would work. If you were going to try it you want to make sure you use extremely ripe (but not black) bananas. The ripe ones have converted most of their starch to sugars. You will probably get much better results if you just make a neutral flavored wine like white grape juice wine and then add banana flavoring. Call the folks over at High Gravity Brewing and see if they have a flavoring for that. Will only cost a few bucks if they have it.
I'm making wine out of some "Simply Apple" no preservatives and not from concentrate. Will let you know how it turns out. I did add sugar to my batch. I have no means of video unfortunately.
How sweet is it when you just use that apple cider and yeast without adding any extra sugar, and is it carbonated. All the video's I have seen they always add extra sugar to raise the alcohol content, what percentage is this and would it make it to sweet if you added say a cup of sugar to a gallon of that cider. Just curious because I would want higher alcohol content.
Yeah I would really like to know the answer to this as well. I unfortunately did not read the recipe I have properly and added 3 and half cups of sugar to my wine. It is brewing now so I will wait and see how it turns out.
I've been making wine recreationally for experimentation and I have a question for any professionals.
WHY DOES MY WINE SMELL SO FUNKY?! Does it need to be matured? Or does it need Campden/ Metabisulfite? To kill undead yeast, I heat the wine to about 175 degrees (NOT boiling) beyond the temperature yeast can survive for about 7 minutes then filter it (cheesecloth). Also, I sterilize all my equipment (glass bottles, airlocks, etc). It smells before and after everything I do. What's the problem?
You should not have to heat ur wine at all. The yeast will die off naturally. Ur likely losing alcohol by heating it. The smell is probably because im guessing ur not clearing your wine with sparkloid or bentonite. Your finished wine should be fairly clear.
Hi. No, I have never used Bentonite but I know what it does (removes solids/impurities) and need to order some.
As for killing yeast, I've *heard* that heating is one of the best and fastest methods to stop fermentation although this could be wrong. I'm aware that it will die naturally but this is just for personal use in small bottles (750ML-1.5L) and I don't want to wait forever
haha alcohol burns off at 175. if you wanna heat it to kill yeast put it in the Mw on low for 1 minute in a shut container dont open it and put in fridge or you could what he does.
so the amount of yeast does not matter that much? so when the batch stops fermenting after the 30 days or however long, what exactly is happening to the yeast and the sugar to make the fermenting stop?
the yeast lack environment to sustain life. in champagne you'de add a sugar - yeast mix.. see it's about the yeast dying. They get really crazy eat everything and starve.. like easter island. if you add any healthy yeast spore it will duplicate itself but it makes checking your locks tiresome. as in.. i want to go to bed but i cheated on yeast? what the hell?? on a yeast budget? also wine shouldn't be made at home because youllgo blind dick holes. notice this guy looks retarded. faggots
The amount of yeast does not matter because the yeast self reproduces. The yeast slowly eats the sugar to reproduce and grow It produces alcohol as a byproduct of this process. Once the sugar has been consumed by the yeast then fermentation stops.
if it's regular juice that already has sugar then you don't HAVE to add anything. I would maybe add 2-3 cups of sugar if you want to make stronger wine. As for the yeast, the amount added is irrelevant because it's going to multiply anyway. As long as you get some in there you're golden.
if it has real sugar in it then yes, but if uses artificial sweetner then no. You'll also have problems like the coloring falling out of the liquid in a lot of drink mixes after a while. The yeast may also have issues due to a lack of nutrients that's normally present in fruit juice so I'd add yeast nutrient if your'e going to do that.
can i sterilize it, does it allow the liquid of the lock to touch the wine. I think the straw's disposability would make it a good cut away link. The image of a burned straw does not allow much to sleep on, mate. Not a lot of tadas about it, it takes 30 minutes just to sterilize the vat. I'll wait, this guy's video is insane. He doesn't seem like he'd drink anything homemade other than a good botulism. He thinks with his hands while making bachus' spit. The botulism would be divine too.
ummm.. yes.. im talking about a high quality child's straw you know the ones that are like bent 4-5 times in an S form then goto the top.. if you heat the bottom... (HEAT NOT BURN) and put one more bend in it so it is sideways and then do the same at the top the S's are then horizontal... fill the lows with water.. and there ya go.. air lock.. and for sterilization... submerge in food grade alcohol or something...
I am moving toward an all glass refinery. The plastic heated straw being in the same room would effect quality. but yeah i think I could make a good seal under the premise of outward pressure not allowing inflow. let me think. Hole in the cap? But it's when the pressure drops overnight, or when the apple juice erupts into your lock. Thats the measure of the lock.. I don't trust those locks I make my own with tube and pill containers, cut and replace with sterile lock. it takes 2 per 1.
this is true... im just saying for cheap cut and dry... easy to do without buying condoms lol :) and the. for all glass... buy glass tubes and heat them until you can bend them. and combine the bent one into the top of a straight one and then again into the middle of the straight one so it looks like a D and there you have a pressure resistant lock...
I added wine tannin and my wine yeast to my grape juice will the tannin contaminate my fermintation.I should have added tannin after fermintation.Did i ruin my batch?
o.o hmm GREAT video! I was wondering if regular dry active yeast will work. I bought some from target to make some dough, and pastry things, but would like to know if it would also work for things like this. ALSO i was wondering how much alcohol the wine would contain in 1 month?
hooyaa!!! you make wine exactly like i do after its finished fermenting i bottle it , i have two bottles that i made with welches 100% white grape juice that i made in 97 i wonder if its good and aged to perfection, i had a bottle that aged 4 yrs and it was very good!! again great job keep up the good work be well.
But they don't come sterile. And lets be honest... it is better party conversation while you are sharing your brew with your friends if you used the condom...
couple questions--- all i do is take my bottle of juice and pour a little bit out add my yeast straight from the pack into the juice cover it overnight attach my condom and poke holes in it? then let it ferment?
hey, me again, my idea is to buy some 100% juice grape juice, transferring it to a 2.5 cup container, (vitamin water container) and putting a spoonful of yeast in it. then placing a regular baloon over it. i need to know if anything is wrong with that. i dont want to get sick doing this. please help me out.
Instead of freezing and all that waste, add more sugar. When the yeast generates high enough alcohol it becomes toxic to the yeast and will kill them naturally. (dissolving their phospholipid bilayer membrane) And en addition you'll have a higher proof beverage. This typically happens around 16% but can be higher depending on the type of yeast you use. Be sure to let it settle like dude said. that floaty shit will give you a slam dunk hangover.
For my primary fermenting I'm using a balloon for an air-lock on a 1 gallon carboy. Its been 15 days, the balloon is still standing up fine and it still has co2 bubbles rising to the top. Im wondering when I should rack it to the second fermenter, how would I judge on when its ready?
MR. Merddyn!! I was wondering if It Can cause any body harm if i drink it to early? before killing all the yeast... See im kinda an impateint guy and i only let it sit in the fridge for a day... is it bad to drink?? Ive draned allot of sediment but there is still more on the bottom??? Can I DIE??
I make absolutely no warranty that you will not die or even get sick, but no you don't generally have to wait until it's clear. You will be much happier with the taste if you wait though.
True but with a condom you don't have to worry about contamination at all. Granted from what I've been reading and talking to others when you pitch the yeast the batch is so infected that the odds of it becoming ruined is pretty low.
For beer you can use some stretch wrap and a rubber band to seal the fermenter, then make a pinhole. Cooper's Brewing kits even suggest this in their pamphlets. Airlocks are worth getting though, they cost less than $2 and are reusable.
I am planning on doing blueberry wine in actual equipment later this week once my equipment gets in...however...since I am too impatient started a 1 gallon lemonade batch, a peach/mango and cranberry raspberry...I'll let you know how it works out...I ended up using a balloon after cleaning it off 1st. I also added sugar to about 20%. I read somewhere that for about every 10% sugar makes 6% alcoholis that true?
BTW did u decide on the wine course or pay forum yet ion your site?
3) any amount of yeast will do. you're infecting the wine like a disease so a little will work but it takes a bit longer. A lot goes faster. Up to you, you still get to the same place.
i'm not familiar with "supplement pills". Given that it's got the name supplement I'm going to guess that it doesnt have any yeast in it, just stuff that yeast need, so probably not.
OMG I just tried to order 4 Red Star Champagne Yeast packets ($3) but I'm in the UK, and it's wanting to charge up to $111.91 for shipping??? WTF!!! I think I'll just need to find something at the local supermarket lol. Good vid tho.
If you live near a Wilkinsons store you can buy wine yeast from there along with all sorts of homebrew gear, they also have a website and deliver. I think it's like £1.50 for a big tub and works well, that's what I use, good luck.
on the cigar, try lighting them with a wooden match instead of a lighter, and don't touch the flame directly to the cigar, and start lighting before you put it in your mouth, it's just kind of traditional to light it like that
if it's a really good quality cigar i'll usually toast it before i light it. the wooden match or wooden strip is so you dont taste any chemicals from the flame. I dont get that with a good quality butane lighter anyway.
thinking about making my own wine, if im going to use 5ltrs of juice how much sugar do you recomend using for increased alcohol %? also herd of people adding water will this help?
Hey man i just wanted to let you know that this is a great video! I'm currently making my own liquor out of white wine using a salad spinner. It sounds awkward at first but it raises the alcohol percent from about 12% to 30%. However, i have one question about your simple wine making. Would it be effective to use a hose to siphen the wine from one bottle to another instead of straining? Respond ASAP please
I didnt use champaign yeast. I used regular rapid rise baking yeast.
Hate to be a bother, but i'm really interested in making some good homemade wine.. I know that i could just go out and buy some, but i think it would be something very cool to know how to do, and do it well hopefully.
Hope you can help me out, or give me afew pointers.
well, you gotta use good yeast man. using bakers yeast for brewing is kind of like putting kerosine in a diesel engine. It might work but it's gonna be a rough ride. The vinegar smell is likely caused by contamination. You have the vinegar bacteria in your house and somehow it's getting into your wine. It's a very common thing, in fact a lot of people do it intentionally to home-make vinegar. Peaches are also notorious for bad wine. I've never got peach wine to turn out well even for me.
I made some wine and it didnt turn out that well, So i got on here and found your video.. I bought a halfGallon of peach/mango juice, Added 1cup of sugar, a pack of yeast. I let it sit for two weeks and got it out to sample it. It tasted like peach vinegar. lol.
I'm wondering why it ended up this way?
I didnt use a ballon or condom to cover it. I used 3 diff plastic zip bags and put pin holes in each to keep air out.
I'm wondering if its because of the bags or the time period?
lol, it tastes pretty darn good if you use good yeast like I recommend in the video. Bread yeast will be pretty nasty. Spend the $2 and get decent yeast. I even show you in one of my other videos how to clone yeast so you dont have to buy it again.
adding sugar is up to you. It ups the time it takes to ferment, but it also ups the alcohol level. You can't usually ferment anything above 17% alcohol though.
If you're mixing this up from concentrate and you're happy with your water quality you shouldnt' have any reason to use the tablets, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.
hey man thanks alot for this video, this method worked for me, however i didn't freeze it. I used just a simple 1 gallon jug of apple juice from concentrate and one small packet of yeast. Next batch I will make ill use something with more sugar content though..
Quick question. Could you ferment sugar water dry, kill the yeast by whatever means, then add concentrate afterwards? Would there be a differance in it and fermenting the juice with added sugar? Thanks.
As you learn more about fermenting you understand that alcohol can and most of the time will absorb flavors from rubbers seals and containers and the like. Simple is good but taste is too.
Thanks to this video, I now have 4 demijohns with different stuff in, apfelwein, apple and white grape juice, cranberry and red grape, and a kit, red table wine
I also have 3 5 gallon bottles, thats the next project, thanks Merddyn!
A condom is already sterile. If you use a balloon, you would need to sterilize it with a water & bleach solution, then rinse it with water. But I don't know if bleach would weaken the rubber, so a different solution might be better. Either way, balloon=cheaper, condom(almost)=fool proof.
would any yeast work? - Im pretty young so i could maybe get some normal yeast from the closest super market, i assume it would but would just take longer
and ive also heard to add sugar and stir until its cloudy, then the extra sugar comes out when you strain, is that a good idea?

How sweet is it when you just use that apple cider and yeast without adding any extra sugar, and is it carbonated. All the video's I have seen they always add extra sugar to raise the alcohol content, what percentage is this and would it make it to sweet if you added say a cup of sugar to a gallon of that cider. Just curious because I would want higher alcohol content.
tweirup 1 year ago
@tweirup
Yeah I would really like to know the answer to this as well. I unfortunately did not read the recipe I have properly and added 3 and half cups of sugar to my wine. It is brewing now so I will wait and see how it turns out.
rilee101 1 year ago
Also, it's much more fun to have the condom fully unrolled so its stretched right out when the brew is fermenting. :P

What's the problem?
uni7art 2 years ago
You should not have to heat ur wine at all. The yeast will die off naturally. Ur likely losing alcohol by heating it. The smell is probably because im guessing ur not clearing your wine with sparkloid or bentonite. Your finished wine should be fairly clear.
merddyn2002 2 years ago
Hi. No, I have never used Bentonite but I know what it does (removes solids/impurities) and need to order some.
As for killing yeast, I've *heard* that heating is one of the best and fastest methods to stop fermentation although this could be wrong. I'm aware that it will die naturally but this is just for personal use in small bottles (750ML-1.5L) and I don't want to wait forever
uni7art 2 years ago
haha alcohol burns off at 175. if you wanna heat it to kill yeast put it in the Mw on low for 1 minute in a shut container dont open it and put in fridge or you could what he does.

so the amount of yeast does not matter that much? so when the batch stops fermenting after the 30 days or however long, what exactly is happening to the yeast and the sugar to make the fermenting stop?
darkdarkred 2 years ago
the yeast lack environment to sustain life. in champagne you'de add a sugar - yeast mix.. see it's about the yeast dying. They get really crazy eat everything and starve.. like easter island. if you add any healthy yeast spore it will duplicate itself but it makes checking your locks tiresome. as in.. i want to go to bed but i cheated on yeast? what the hell?? on a yeast budget? also wine shouldn't be made at home because youllgo blind dick holes. notice this guy looks retarded. faggots
ihavestage4coolness 2 years ago
you will not go blind from home made wine, mead or beer. homemade whiskey is another story.
defiythelie 2 years ago
bullshit all of these videos are garbage. i was joking obviously.
ihavestage4coolness 2 years ago
The amount of yeast does not matter because the yeast self reproduces. The yeast slowly eats the sugar to reproduce and grow It produces alcohol as a byproduct of this process. Once the sugar has been consumed by the yeast then fermentation stops.
darrenct83 2 years ago
The yeast runs out of sugar to convert, its all alcohol at the end.
NARCOPOLO76 2 years ago
about how much sugar and yeast do u add in to a 1 gallon batch? is there a certain ratio or amount u should use?
darkdarkred 2 years ago
if it's regular juice that already has sugar then you don't HAVE to add anything. I would maybe add 2-3 cups of sugar if you want to make stronger wine. As for the yeast, the amount added is irrelevant because it's going to multiply anyway. As long as you get some in there you're golden.
merddyn2002 2 years ago
could powdered drink mix(tang, coolaid ect ) be used to make the juice for the wine ?
amwdc21 2 years ago
if it has real sugar in it then yes, but if uses artificial sweetner then no. You'll also have problems like the coloring falling out of the liquid in a lot of drink mixes after a while. The yeast may also have issues due to a lack of nutrients that's normally present in fruit juice so I'd add yeast nutrient if your'e going to do that.
merddyn2002 2 years ago
get a bendy straw heat it up and bend it in the middle... fill center with water... put into a corck of proper size... tada air lock
fjlj 2 years ago
can i sterilize it, does it allow the liquid of the lock to touch the wine. The botulism would be divine too.
ihavestage4coolness 2 years ago
ummm.. yes.. im talking about a high quality child's straw you know the ones that are like bent 4-5 times in an S form then goto the top.. if you heat the bottom... (HEAT NOT BURN) and put one more bend in it so it is sideways and then do the same at the top the S's are then horizontal... fill the lows with water.. and there ya go.. air lock.. and for sterilization... submerge in food grade alcohol or something...
fjlj 2 years ago
I am moving toward an all glass refinery. The plastic heated straw being in the same room would effect quality. but yeah i think I could make a good seal under the premise of outward pressure not allowing inflow. let me think. Hole in the cap? But it's when the pressure drops overnight, or when the apple juice erupts into your lock. Thats the measure of the lock.. I don't trust those locks I make my own with tube and pill containers, cut and replace with sterile lock. it takes 2 per 1.
ihavestage4coolness 2 years ago
this is true... im just saying for cheap cut and dry... easy to do without buying condoms lol :) and the. for all glass... buy glass tubes and heat them until you can bend them. and combine the bent one into the top of a straight one and then again into the middle of the straight one so it looks like a D and there you have a pressure resistant lock...

You are officially awesome. My grandfather would always use condoms when he made his wine, glad to see he wasn't the only one.
Rock on dude.
b3nzy123 2 years ago
Instead of freezing and all that waste, add more sugar. When the yeast generates high enough alcohol it becomes toxic to the yeast and will kill them naturally. (dissolving their phospholipid bilayer membrane) And en addition you'll have a higher proof beverage. This typically happens around 16% but can be higher depending on the type of yeast you use. Be sure to let it settle like dude said. that floaty shit will give you a slam dunk hangover.
samhellion 2 years ago

Can I DIE??

You don't need a condom, you can just use a balloon.
MissileSlLO 2 years ago 2
True but with a condom you don't have to worry about contamination at all. Granted from what I've been reading and talking to others when you pitch the yeast the batch is so infected that the odds of it becoming ruined is pretty low.
POC3442 2 years ago
For beer you can use some stretch wrap and a rubber band to seal the fermenter, then make a pinhole. Cooper's Brewing kits even suggest this in their pamphlets. Airlocks are worth getting though, they cost less than $2 and are reusable.

I am planning on doing blueberry wine in actual equipment later this week once my equipment gets in...however...since I am too impatient started a 1 gallon lemonade batch, a peach/mango and cranberry raspberry...I'll let you know how it works out...I ended up using a balloon after cleaning it off 1st. I have a few questions, cuz i got interested.
1: Did you not add any extra sugar because it was already pretty sugarie?
2: what if the drink your making your "wine" out of is already fizzy ( like coke or w/e) no change in yeast or ingreadients or nothing?
And lastly, how do much yeast goes for how much wine you are making? Just add the whole bag to that one bottle?
ty, please answer simple...since iv never done this
IQpizza 2 years ago
1) no extra sugar necessary.
2) I don't know, never tried it.
3) any amount of yeast will do. you're infecting the wine like a disease so a little will work but it takes a bit longer. A lot goes faster. Up to you, you still get to the same place.
merddyn2002 2 years ago
can i use the "brewers yeast " supplement pills as a fermentation yeast?

If you live near a Wilkinsons store you can buy wine yeast from there along with all sorts of homebrew gear, they also have a website and deliver. I think it's like £1.50 for a big tub and works well, that's what I use, good luck.

on the cigar, try lighting them with a wooden match instead of a lighter, and don't touch the flame directly to the cigar, and start lighting before you put it in your mouth, it's just kind of traditional to light it like that
adonian 2 years ago
if it's a really good quality cigar i'll usually toast it before i light it. the wooden match or wooden strip is so you dont taste any chemicals from the flame. I dont get that with a good quality butane lighter anyway.

Respond ASAP please
lsmeff2 2 years ago
Ohh Yea, I forgot to mention.
Thx Man.
DolittleMccoy 2 years ago
well, you gotta use good yeast man. using bakers yeast for brewing is kind of like putting kerosine in a diesel engine. I've never got peach wine to turn out well even for me.
merddyn2002 2 years ago
Hey, Great Video.
DolittleMccoy 2 years ago
lol, it tastes pretty darn good if you use good yeast like I recommend in the video.

A condom is already sterile. If you use a balloon, you would need to sterilize it with a water & bleach solution, then rinse it with water. But I don't know if bleach would weaken the rubber, so a different solution might be better. Either way, balloon=cheaper, condom(almost)=fool proof.
