  • This is a great song, so underrated for it's time, soulful & funky...Muppets make this a great video, they should have used this song in their new movie...I think I will have to rock this at a jam....

  • Great song and great sound quality! I loved this song from the first time I heard it 41 years ago!

  • DEFINITELY a Sgt. Pepper's influence on this arrangement.

  • I like Tom Jones's version also but I favor the Fifth's version with their outstanding harmonies along with the guitar, bass and drums.

  • I like the Tom Jones version better.

  • Marilyn's voice is like a fine candy that melts and fills your mouth with smooth flavor!

  • Do you know who?

  • If you wanna see me do my thang, pull my strang. lol Love this song!

  • Dislikes?? If only you "dislike" guys and gals were teenagers and in your 20's back then......if only you new generation dudes and dudettes knew what you missed!!

  • If you wanna see me do mah thing......Thank you for a classic song!

  • I remember listening to this album over & over when I was about 5-6 yrs (about 1970). Such awesome voices!

  • I love the 5th Dimension. Puppet Man was the Jam.

  • I relly love the part when the old man starts dancing and really getting into it

  • Loved these people ever since I was a white boy. "If you wanna see me do my thing, pull my string ..."

It really sounds like thang and strang but drawn just out a bit. Very kewl.

Btw, puppet songs were noteable around that time even in French pop. Marvin & Tammi, France Gall are worth giving a listen. The times have changed the theme because recent releases entail control of the emo sort. Check out a song by Gregory & Hawk to see what I mean.

  • I absolutely love this song. I remember seeing the 5th Dimension perform this song in some show and they were done up as puppets, complete with strings on their arms. It was great - wish I could see that again.

  • @MicheleMuir I would have loved to see that. I bet they cut a rug to this too.

  • co-written by Neil Sedaka!

  • one of their best if not no 1. this is groovy as fuck.

  • When Flo says "I'll crackerjack till the break of dawn.", they should have made the puppet do the Crackerjack.

  • @MsTexas73 And correcting myself...it's Marilyn who says that line.

  • It sounds like only Marilyn in the mix until a minute into the song and then you can hear Florence in the mix with her. This song should have charted higher in it's day!

  • See to me it sounds like Marilyn and Flo are singing in unison until Marilyn fluctuated her note UP.

  • Scratch that...Upon listening again, I agree it sounds like Marilyn is singing lead then Flo joins her...then later in the song it sounds like after Marilyn hits the high note, Flo comes in on lead. I've always loved their multi-layered leads. I think it's one of the things that defined their sound.

  • Yes, that's pretty much what I thnik too...and YES...I think this whole lp is GREAT and 1 should have had MORE singles released and 2...this song should have charted MUCH higher..."Feelin' Alright?" should have been released...and "On the Beach in the Summertime" should have actually been ON the original album and released as a single.

  • I agree 9ballguy - this was one of their best songs but never got the fanfare that Acquarias / One less Bell got. Great song.

  • This is just too cute...but I can't get over the excellent vocals to this song.

Now tell me...is it just Marilyn singing the lead and not her and Flo? I know they also were known to layer their vocals so that's why I'm curious.

  • Exactly what 'string' am I supposed to pull, to see you do your 'thing'

  • This is the coolest song! Love it!!!

  • If U wanna see me do ma thang ... pull my strang. : )

  • i just got this album *sigh* I love the good will

  • Absolute corker of a tune! The lead guitar and bass are totally on fire

  • What the Muppets!?

  • Rockin tune by the Fifth.... A classic!

  • Original video and song came from "It Takes A Thief" episode famous for featuring Marilyn McCoo as a love interest of Al's!

  • Telling on myself, but I saw that episode when it originally aired! LOVE this song.

  • As did I also! The episode is called "To Sing A Song Of Murder" show #320.

If you search "To Sing A Song Of Murder" you might find it to download! Good Luck!

  • NICE! :D
