Una volta la Caballe' mi disse all'orecchio..nella lirica ci sono misteri ......Bruno Bartoletti Ruggero Raimondi, etc Raiomodi un basso?Verdiano?morbido?per essere morbidi ci vuole la voce....
I'm glad someone posted a compliment (of sorts) about Raimondi. Why does everyone always get so down on Ruggerio Raimondi's singing? I see negative comments about his vocal ability everywhere.
This is a discussion about vocal fach. Stop jumping on the defensive before you've figured out exactly what's going on. If you'd prefer to not engage in the conversation, then don't. But, for goodness sakes, leave me be.
more and more every goode technique and voice... very easey to talk about "verdian" voices or any other, but beleve me, so difficult to finde now a really good, strong, correct and truthlly smart- emotional singer.. that kined of singer can seng everything...
while the talk of whether someone is a verdian singer is amusing.we know that the lines of these fachs can and will be crossed on a regular.its O.K. if they are able to handle it and make beautiful music out of it then great.just enjoy.you can always tell when a bunch of vocal students comment because they think they know so much.hone your own skills and make it work for you.the performance has already been recorded.just listen and know it wont be the last time these fach lines will be crossed.
My only change in the casting would have been to replace Raimondi with Nicolai Ghiaurov. I have never been a fan of Raimondi's rather thin-sounding voice. Other than that, I can't think of other Sopranos, Mezzos, or Tenors that would represent a significant upgrade to this 1977 cast.
Wonderful Freni, Pavarotti and Raimondi! A shame the mezzo is the grotesque Obraztsova! She spoils the ethereal line with that vulgar tone! A really pity! Where was Valenti-Terrani when we need her! :-D
Actually, she's the only one of the four who is a true Verdi mezzo... the other three are lyrics and not, necessarily, appropriate for this genre (Verdian) of music. That said, they all sound awful here... check the Karajan version out. It's much better.
Pavarotti's voice was, admittedly, small. He's a lyric tenor. Sure, we praise him for his Verdi portrayals, but a true Verdian tenor... nah. Raimondi was a bass-bariton, and sure he had a substantial voice. However, I don't think he'd call himself a true Verdian. Freni is nothing more and nothing less than a true lyric soprano. Did she sing Desdemona, Lenora, etc.? Absolutely, but that doesn't make her a true Verdian soprano.
urgrad03 - hahah!! so the conclution is' that you would sing better insted all of them, with you verdian voce... how pitty thad abbado didn't call you.. :)))
hahahaQ! who r u to decide, what is really "verdian" voce?
I don't make decisions as to vocal fach, but I do know exactly where the fachs place a singer. You, sir, clearly do not. If you did you wouldn't be using your simple sarcasm to try and debase my statements.
i can tell you somthing: i love opera and vocal music all my life, and before i began to study it priffetionally, i was criticicing everybode like you do, but when you begin to study, and see how difficult is it, and how unik every single good voce, you apprishiate
Verdi wrote many different tenor roles. Very high light ones such as the Duke and heavy lower roles such as Otello.
You can't generalise them all together, a 'true Verdian tenor' would be one who could do equal justice to Otello and the Duke, no such tenor has really existed.
This string is so old, but clearly I know what Verdi wrote. No lesson learned there. My argument was, as I can gather from so long ago, that Pav - vocal fach wise - was a lyric tenor. That's about it. I would be foolish to lump all Verdi roles into one voice, so please don't take my comments out of context. My use of "true Verdi" simply means within the context of the role.
hehe :) what is this. a dj with a stick in his hands. starts with verdi "dies irae" and mix it to another non stop. what a remix :) Sound quality is nice but microphone settings are wrong. Sounds are mixed to each other. But a great performance. I would like to hear it live. Big vocals very big names
Ah. This video sounds so much better than the other clip with the poor sound quality. I love the close ups on Abbado too. I sang this Verdi Requiem once. I found it to be an incredible work to do as a singer.

Who decided which kind of voice is "the right Verdi voice"?
These four sound gorgeous. They also sang together with a great sense of ensemble and phrasing of the text.
Or does that not count?

what year was this video recorded? 1965?
pannonicus 5 years ago
Not 1965. That I believe is the year he made the recording (on DVD) with Karajan in Italy. It looks
like the late 1970's or early 1980's at the tenor's zenith.
