  • gr8 jason i love it. gotta get one my stove burns gas too heavy. can u tell me what ounce each can is pls? thx i love ur vids i've watched alot of yours....thx karen

  • Good Job! this is the sort of videos youtube was designed for!

  • can you cook a steak on it?

  • I recommend wearing gloves while feeding the fire

  • Excellent video! Thx

  • The best ideas are called one dollar solutions, because they are very simple and high efficient. thank you.

  • Hey Jason, just wondering if you still use this and if you prefer it to a simpler well made Hobo stove? Mine does everything that this does but is just one piece, = 1/2 the weight. Let me know what you think.

  • this is a cool stove, i like it

  • light and compact are not two words I would use with this stove if you want light and compact you should get the little dandy wood burning stove. It folds down the thickness of two playing cards and weighs less than that one.

  • i swear u said " Get the FUCKIN' fire going" at 1:58 ....

  • Very good video. I see it's been here for a while, but it really helped me out. Ive been looking to make a wood stove of this type for myself and this seems to be a very well thought out design. Thank you for not only the demo, but the review at the end.

  • thank you for giving of your time and research. i hope you are able to make more videos - they help people. helping is a gift from God.

  • how do you avoid smoke getting in the things your cooking up using this kind of stove especially if it is the kind of pan that doesn't have a lid????

  • That stove = simple. Simple is good.

  • Jason as with all wood burning stoves there is always a layer soot on the bottom and side of the pot. I have not heard anyone talk about a trick tought to me by a girl scout leader. Simply rub the outside of the pot with some dish soap before you cook in it and the soot will wipe right off with a little water. The pot comes out looking brand new.

  • cool video!

  • Nice Stove. I think it is great to showcase good items. Thanks ~General Biggs~

  • Do you think this stove could with stand use of esbit tablets? Or is the temp too high?

  • Thanks for the video. I have a Eldfell woodburning stove from Tentipi, but I am sad to say I never got a chance to try it out yet!

  • excellent design, amazing and simple

  • Rock on..good video..thank you

  • great review. thanks.

  • I didnt get on very well with the woodgas stoves i found them to time consuming, Got bored very easily

  • lol @ 1:57. good catch goroll

  • i use gasoline as tinder on wood

  • Not being picky but those are not exhaust or vent holes. They are air intake ports that allow air to be vac'd in to support the fire.

  • did u get burned at the 3:06 mark?

  • @etekballer14

Nope, but I lost a little hair off my knuckles. ;)

  • @jasonklass

It looks as though A LOT of heat is lost out the V cut on top.

  • @etekballer14

That dude is tough...he grabbed the lid at 3:28 without a flinch.

I bet he puts the fire out with his feet.

  • 2 1/2 years since you posted this, Jason. Do you still use it? Just curious if it withstood the test of time.

    From Tony

  • @Kingreddoberman

Hi Tony, It's not that it hasn't withstood the test of time, it's just that I like to use different stoves every time to experiment. Do i still like it? YES! But I have no loyalty to any stove and take different ones out according to my whims.

  • Hah! Face it, Jason, you're a gear junky :) Me too. Anyways, I just got one of these wood burners in the mail thinking maybe the dirtiness of burning wood would be offset by not having to carry fuel. Thanks for the input.

    From Tony

  • Wow..that is pretty cool. I would really love to have one.

    Great video!!

  • Also if one is not so worried about ultra lite you can most likely use a can of Sterno fuel the same way Jason demonstrated using the alcohol stove inside of the upper part of the stove. I am curious though. The fuel port on mine seems smaller on my stove than yours, Jason. Mines about 4 1/4 in height and 4 1/2 inches wide. It just looks smaller than yours.

  • the clips are bendy clips, right?

  • @legox50

Not sure what you mean but they're those small black clips from Office Depot what you pinch and use to hold thicker piles of paper together. Does that explanation make sense?

  • They're binder clips. Not sure what size but I think they are the half inch ones.

  • @suicidalmind

    That sounds about right.

  • ...man I was just joking....hahahaha

  • @salbella50

    thumbs up man!

  • ....and then go's the ambers..burning the forest down...

  • @salbella50

Have you ever used a wood burning stove?

  • If I am correct you can nest a nalgene water bottle inside of it while its in storage to reduce the space that it takes up.

  • Excellent video. Thanks so much for sharing your insights.

  • great vid but were is the tutorial on how to make it i cant find it on the website

  • i hope you don't where polyester.

  • piece of gear usefull ,and cheap .

plz note ,having your portable stove will be very handy .

    add to gear

  • Great vid. What's the bottom can? Just a coffee can, or similar? Thx.

  • @flythrough123

Its a 1 Quart paint can.

  • You could also use the top part to use as a cold weather wind screen by putting a candle under the alcohol stove to make sure the alcohol burns ;)

  • Wats Jims website?

  • Trail Gear Org

  • Great review!

    I think I'll give one a crack

  • Watch the thing don't tip over and scold you mate!

  • Just happened to have the lint huh? We know you save that stuff.

  • I noticed that the lint was the same color as his fleece jacket. Apparently he keeps his colors matching too.

  • Great vid. I like the many ideas that were presented here. It is so great to see ingenuity from people who, with their interest, develop ideas. Building anything on your own with ideas is a wonderful experience. This was very educational. Keep in mind that with wood you are using a fuel that is carbon neutral, in that it replenishes the earth with oxygen / carbon exchange its whole life as a tree. So the carbon add is net zero. Not so with gas fuels they only add carbon and remove none. Thanks !

  • How is it that you know that Carbon Dioxide is good for the environment yet you think that gas/propane burning stoves hurt the environment. Keep on contradicting yourself.

Oh yeah global warming is a scam........

  • Truth bro, one small volcanic eruption puts out more carbon, sulfur dioxide, methane, co2, etc. Than humans ever have. That's ONE eruption! That and last year was the coldest winter in recorded history here :P

  • @EXT3RMIN8R Water is good for living things until you give them too much and they drown. Try breathing carbon dioxide and see how good it is for you.

  • would a coffee can work?

  • Jason, you did a great job in this instructional video. Thanks for taking the time.

  • Great info, thank you.

  • U have a Kelly as well. I agrre -it is superfast water boiling. But size, volume and weigt in consieration, -it is not a thing for more than a daytrip. Anyway -it funtion.

Go on jason. Your stile is very good.

  • You can dump gas in the hole.

  • that waz cool

  • Have you looked at the Bushbuddy or bushcooker stoves of Canada or Europe? They're wood gasification stoves and fit into a Snow Peak 900.

  • Yes, I have tried the Bushbuddy. Great stove.

  • The video kinda makes it looks like your hands are fireproof! it is just crazy looking. good video though. How much does it weigh?

  • Thanks. It's about 5 and a half ounces

  • look up the small "KELLY KETTLE" you'd probably like it. i like mine has a water jacket boils water in 2:20, pretty fast

  • I love the design of the Kelly Kettle. It's just too heavy. I wish they made a titanium version.

  • nice rig but i'd like to add some info. a decent alcohol stove like you have there should boil water in under 3 minutes minus the soot on the pan. it's nice to have both though

  • I've never heard of any alcohol stove that could boil 2 cups of water in under 3 minutes.

  • jetboil and of course you know Tinny, both have small stoves that will boil in that time. i should add that there are variables like outside temp and water temp.

  • The Jetboil isn't an alcohol stove. And which stove from Tinny boils in under 3 minutes?

  • you got me there i watched one of his many videos and he does some burn times with a timer. if i remember i'll be sure to give you a link.if i remember correctly tinny's stove did it in something like 2:37 or 2:47. if you go to his page and click "see all videos" it's about a 1/3 from the bottom. sorry that's the best i can do on the video

  • this would be a great buy for someone that don't have time to build ,or don;t want the chance of cutting themsevles tring to build it,, very nice video.. I went to website trailgear , but didn't see one like this, nor the plans but it seems like they maybe in process of making changes to their site,, i would like to know about the V shaped clips ? what are they? where do I get them or how do I make them? and how may holds are in the top & bottom ? sizes? or does it matter?

  • the v shaped clips look binder clips. You can get them anywhere office supplies are sold. If they are not binder clips, i'm sure binder clips woud work. you can get them many different sizes, which could be helpful depending on the size of you pot.

  • i say if you bought this you got jipped..

  • wait... someone sells these and people actually buy them? people, go buy some soup cans and make them youself!

  • LOL No doubt ar15guru. Plus you also get the soup.LOL It never ceases to amaze me how inept some people are at making even very simple things. It is a neat design but the principle behind it is easy and it would be quicker to make it than run to the store and buy it. People please, if you have never built or made anything give it a try. After you get good at it, it is lots of fun and very handy to be able to get out and make something you want or need. Give it a try..

  • ar15guru

It's funny that folk can figure out the features of,and how to use an I-phone, yet altering a couple of cans seems more difficult than the time it takes at work to make money to buy one of these.

  • rvlqcitizen

    Ha ha ha ha

Boy did you hit the nail on the head.

  • Nice design , but i noticed the rim above the feeding opening is bending , maybe due to the heat. Maybe leave some extra material say 2 cm's ore 1 inch in your cut of the opening from the top would make it a bit stronger so no bending any more.

  • As far as space saving how about 4 flat metal pieces hinged at the corners so it would fold flat?

But maybe the round shape makes a better burn.

    Just a thought.

  • That would sound like a good idea to save space, but I think this wood stove works on the same principle as a "chimney starter" like is used for a charcoal grill, or a chimney stove/flue pipe for a home wood burner. I honestly haven't made a square wood stove so this is just a guess, but the shape of the round stove has a draft turbulence effect, and is more efficient than a square shape. Granted chimney's in houses have a square flue, but there is a stronger draft influenced in that system.....

  • great video, i made my first woodgas stove today and i think i will try this one next

  • Cool, any pics?

  • lol he cused. :-/

  • I WANA MAKE ONE!! Where can i get the instuctions WITHOUT paying?!

  • make videos indoors to avoid wind problems and proper explanation

  • Useful little stove, thanks.. I am wondering where I could find a DIY plan for an indoor heating stove / with ventilation this small and efficient..

  • cool stove i have built my own totaly difrent like the V feed hole on that ill have to post a vid on my stoves some time

  • 1:56 did u curse? "get the fkin fire going"

  • ha ha. no. I stuttered. I said, "...to get the f, fire going". But maybe I should curse more just to keep it interesting. It worked for George Carlin.

  • wow amazing...im going to make one of these thank you for the great design

  • did you make that alcohol stove you used an example. ive been continually trying to make one without success do you have any tips?

  • Hi Boomer,

Yes, I did. It was actually the first alcohol stove I ever built--just a straight up Pepsi style stove. What kinds of problems are you having? You can email me if you need some advice. Maybe I can help.

  • ive been having problems when i put my pot on top of the stove it has the annoying tendency of burning for a whole 12 seconds then going out after i put the pot on it. Also, do you have any tips on getting the two cans to fit together more easily?

  • Are you getting a good fire going first? Is there water on the bottom of the pot when you put it on?

  • theres like a very small amount of condensation from the cold water thats in it.

  • That could be contributing to it but it shouldn't put out the flame completely. How long are you letting the fire go before putting the pot on?

  • Wait, are we talking about the flame going out when you use the alcohol stove or the wood burning stove?

  • Nice looking idea and design - 7minutes boil time is good! After use it must get pretty dirty and hard to pack. A PotPal would be handy for simple clean storage of the pot in your pack and the safety factors. Great videos, like 'em!

  • Im not sure who J. Falk is but I wouldn't say he invented this, but customized an old design to fit his use a bit better. My grandpa always called these hobo stoves and I've known how to make one since I was about 12

  • looks kinda unsteady

  • Here's another video of someone who built one himself, I think it's an awesome design.

    watch?v=9_3xDqzEgzE

  • that doesnt look store bought. looks like a 1qt paint can and a soup can kinda cobbled together cool idea

  • From what I gathered, He bought it from a guy that makes them.

  • dryer lint is excelent tinder it burns hot and for a while ( like 10 seconds) and there is alot of it

  • "get the fucking fire going" ?? :D hahah I didn't expect you to say that.

  • It has no bottem, don't put it on flameable ground..

  • These are HARD to make with simple household tools!

    Agh!!!

  • drill(can opener), scissors, utility knife.

  • I made one of these from directions I found on the internet. It works great! Brings water to a boil in about 7 minutes. And is welcome and light wieght addition to my gear! I plan to improve on the design alittle, But I will use this often i'm sure!! Thanks Jason

  • excellent video.

no bull all good i have been experimenting with a few of these stoves. fun

     buzz

  • What you use for back up when there is a fire ban in the woods ur in at the time??

If you dont bring an alcolchol stove along?

    Thanks

  • You simply fail to adhere to the ban. If you are safe with your fire I see no problem with this. Those bans are made for stupid suburbanites who know nothing about camping/hiking. This is my opinion.

  • if theres a fire ban wouldnt you not be allowed to use an alcohol stove???? and y would you go hicking/backpacking when theres a fire ban anyways if you stay the night that means no campfire

  • Camping stoves are allowed in fireban times, and its not really a good reason for us to stay out of the woods if there is one going on, just have to use the campstove MSR or other and not have the campfire at night time. Yes having the campfire is a huge part of camping but sometimes they will not be allowed.

No one wants to be the person responsible for starting a huge forestfire, that would be bad and very expensive, plus its good camping ediquite (sp)??

    Thanks

  • thats poor silverfox's is better all the flame comes out the side on this one

  • It's the lent from the shirt he is wearing!!!

    What a scandal!!!

  • why is that a scandal? lent is a great rife tender along with cotton balls, maby u should spend les tim infrount of the pc and get outside and learn something

  • It's a joke, homeslice. I've used lent before and know how amazing it is. Trust me I'm a doctor.

  • Finally a great video that actually mentions boil times! Thank you Thank you!

Anyway I liked the clip and it was one of the better ones Ive seen.

Im wondering a few things though for this type of flame would that produce alot of soot, or does the stove operate better with the higher flame compared to more of a hot coals type of heat??

Also we do 90% of our cooking while canoing over a wood fire , and know that on many pots there are temp. limits and often these limits can be reaced using wood

  • Why, buy an Primus Omnifuel and you are down to 3 min and 40 seconds

  • $126.95 - that's why, idiot.

  • win.

  • Nice. I guess selecting the stove you bring for a given trip is a real art with a lot of variables. I've got white gas, propane, and alcohol... wood is next!

  • These give off deadly soot filled smoke. Beware.

  • I hope you get a chance to test that statement, fool

  • Excellent review brother. Really enjoyed it. I plan on trying to build my own.

  • Jason , very resourceful. It looks like it would be prettys simple to make. Is it?

  • Yes, very easy. Jim has directions on his website.

  • Couldn't you make one of those with two old coffee cans?

  • Um, it IS made from 2 old coffee cans. Instructions are available on Jim's site.

  • excelant video it is even on jim falk`s web site

  • I hate to say it, but it looks like a pretty poor design compared to the others I have seen here. I think the problem is the huge V shaped port you use to add fuel. It allows the flame to spill out the side which is not too efficient.

  • U can buy ready made or make your own i think thats the point!!!

  • Making your own is really a great idea and something fun to do. My point is that there are a bunch of designs floating around the net, this one just seems to be one of the ones that doesn't work too well. Once you check out some of the others, I think you will agree.

  • I strongly believe in DIY and experimenters I did one myself I use thermoelectric to run my fan and the excess heat to charge my phone or anything you want to plug as long as it won't suck all the juice for the fan!!! watch my videos at "leisryan" i'll be posting it soon!!!

  • put up a link, I don't know what leisryan is

  • excellent! thanks for posting

  • 0:56 its so creepy watching his shadow talk instead of him. idk about anyone else but it just gives me the chills

  • Greaty video, and can you tell me what is the diameter of the ventilation holes.

  • GOOOD ,ENJOYED IT

  • I'm pretty sure fire bans only apply to open flames. This woodstove has a contained flame, so it'd still be ok. But I may be wrong about that.

anyways, great video, thanks for sharing.

  • Depands if the fire sits on the ground or is contained within the "Tin".

    I think..

  • In many places contained flame wood stoves are allowed, though foresters reserve the right to override any stove they consider a fire hazard.

  • Thanks, dude. Mine is 5 pounds. XD

  • Nice little unit. Thx for the vid Jason. Two serious questions. What happens if you hit the trailhead and there's a fire ban? And is it true alcohol stoves are included in a fire ban situation?

  • Great video - thanks.

  • Great dude. I just bring a stainless pot that holds 2 1/2 quarts of water. i welded a custom stainless grate that i rest on two rocks, with coals from the main fire, underneath. we almost always camp near moving water, so i save a ton of weight by not having to carry more then a quart+1/2 of bottled water per day , in with me. I fucking Love camping.

  • Great video, Very informative..

  • Great stove!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the informative video, great review. a lot cheaper than the bush buddy.

  • Thankssssssssssssssssssss

  • I would probably add 3 little legs to the outside of the bottom container to make it more sturdy but other than that, great little gadget. My guess is, charcoal would probably work in it as well.

  • You seem like an intelligent and articulate individual. I like your reviews.

  • There was quite a bit of flames coming from the fuel port. Was there much spark or flying ash that might make it unsafe to use in overly dry conditions?

  • Nothing that caused me concern. If you clear the area of debris first, it should be OK.

  • Did you say " Feed it with larger pieces to get the f*ckin fire going"???

  • lol i heard it too hehe

  • hahahaha lol thats funny he did say it

  • the pocket stove that the womanis showing(Susan something) is a hexy burner,it is use by the british force but the way she was showing how to use it was dangerous, maybe someone can make a vid on how to use a hexy burner properly.

  • i always use hexy burners and see people using them in stupid ways aswell, if used properly they're a nice small piece of kit

  • Look at 'SUSAN MICHELLE'S COMPASS:AGS Labs Camping Gear--pocket stove' and try to get the video removed before the advice given (by an outdoor store!) gets someone seriously hurt.

  • Impressive. Looks like a great wood stove, there are many on the market, i would say most aint as thoughtful, quick to boil and are heavier than this one and this one can be made for free! good stuff.

If you are willing to pay for a wood burning stove the bushbuddy is prob the best out there but it doesnt come cheap. I would love to see a side by side review on these 2 stoves.

  • I was just over at the Bushbuddy site and saw that there was an option to buy the plans for $4.95 with part of the proceeds going to research for diabetes. Perhaps that might help your price concerns. Best at you!

  • I agree - I got a bushbuddy this spring. At first I thought it was a bit pricy for a can with some holes in it, but it is the best piece of lightweight camping gear I have ever owned. 8-10 outings later and no regrets. I wish I'd bought one sooner.

  • I just tried Dryer Lint for kindling - it seriously burns better than anything Ive ever seen - ever.

  • whats the code

  • I PAYED THE FIVE DOLLARS AND ALL I GOT WAS A STUPID RECEIPT SAYING THAT I PAYED FIVE DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!

    DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CODE?????

    please : )

  • lol 17 thousand views and 20 comments...i wonder

  • wow totally awesome!

    im going to buy one...

  • It looks like you can burn yourself pretty easliy with that stove :(

  • huh..you can burn yourself with fire? WTF....

  • Wow! that stove really rocks!

  • Great Stove and great video as always jason
