  • Love the warm, wooden tone of the high toms. He always has an incredible range of sounds.

  • meeeelody. mwah, delicious!

  • Reminds me the style of Max Roach (Y)

  • i feel like he toke a page from bozzio's book for this one...not that its not awsome

  • @Jabarichonicles Oh he's great....His resume proves it.

  • @Moog167

    he is...just makin a observation

  • I can tell when a guy's is enjoying a dip of Copehagan from a mile away!

  • Very creative!!!!

  • can't put my finger on it but it's almost like he's sooo good and is able to do so much at once that some of the feel gets lost here. Before i get reponses of f you, I love Chad Wackerman I just enjoy him more on "The best band you never heard in your life," by Zappa.

  • Chad is a Phenomenal Drummer. He has a great sense of time, And he has amazing technique. And i just love the patterns he plays.

  • those drums sound so nice. he's got a fantastic touch!

  • The snail himself.

  • His independence is really great and I love the open tuning of his drums, those toms just SING! :)

  • I like how he keeps looking around... you can really see the question posted on his face "what am I gonna hit next?"

  • why he started whit a terrible 2 stroke roll???!!

amazing musicians but ,what abuout the rudiments??

  • @TheLonmil that was a buzz roll, completely different

  • @Toshfunk HONESTLY ,ALSO IF IS A BUZZ ROLL IS NOT VERY CLEAN!!!

    MOORE PRESURE!!

  • @TheLonmil FORTUNALLY I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BUZZ ,THE DOUBLE AND INVERTED DOUBLE ...I STUDIED IT ON "STICK CONTROL" "ACCENT AND REBOUND" "MASTER STUDIES 1"!!!!!!!

however CHAD is a great drummer i saw him with the great HOLDSWORTH!!!

  • i dont understand why a guy with so much passion for his instrument seems to struggle with a double stroke roll on the snare, and an attempt at a paradiddle around the toms...he's brilliant musician dont get me wrong...

  • @rootbeerazor Mate, i had a private lesson with Chad and he taught me how to properly do a double stroke roll and when he showed me, he had no trouble with it. He did it with ease!!

  • @rootbeerazor way to put the cart before the horse, there.

  • very fluid...super sick

  • He saw Jimi Hendrix? He musta been a baby cuz Hendrix died in 1970.

  • @lemonite1 no, actually chad doesnt age... ever... he is kind of like dorian grey, he could be 80 years old for what i know, he still looks like he was 25

  • Is it just me or does he talk with a bit of a lisp?

  • @TheWho852 its more like hes got a bit of dip (tobacco) in his mouth.

  • All I have to say is Chad Wackerman- Zoot Allures :()

  • In my opinion, I feel Chad is far too often left out of drumming discussions and should be mentioned with the likes of Weckl, Gadd, Morello, Gottlieb, etc. I was fortunate to see him some years ago with Alan Holdsworth and he blew me away. A true professional.

  • very bad idea to mix up drumming and interview, impossible to follow both

  • Thanks for posting; much appreciated

  • Why do they have to cut the fucking drumming video up with the interview? They should put it either at the beginning or at the end. It's like that god-awful "The Last Supper" DVD from Black Sabbath.

  • He's kinda copying Terry Bozzio's style with the whole ostinato with feet and soloing with hands. Terry more or less created that, and it seems like Chad, another Zappa drummer, is copying that. Also is he doing a polyrhythm at 1:49?

  • Musical.

  • while bozzio technically speaking is amazing....i believe wackerman sounds more natural and not like a drum mahine.

  • Hah! make a jazz noise here ayy ayyy!!

  • I think we can't judge a drummer for just one solo, but in my opinion Chad Wackerman is a great drummer, also Terry Bozzio, becouse it isn't how fast you play is about creativity, and this two excells in that, and I do consider Terry the best.

  • If we're gonna bring Zappa into the equation, let's not leave out Morgan Agren...

  • Comment removed

  • well

the problem is people aren't smart enough to figure out that's what they're doing...

  • @kikme778 As much as I agree with u about terry and chad's skill, just fyi, there's no such thing as a 5/11 time polyrhythm. There are 5/11 COUNT polyrhythms, however time signatures are always structured, whether 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 13/16, 17/16, etc. Polyrhythms are just how we manipulate time signatures by counting hits over them rather then counting time itself. :)

  • @guitarskillz i said 5/11 because they are so skilled that they can play something that is impossible.

  • @guitarskillz lol

  • To all the morons talking bad about one of these drummers or another Wackerman, Bozzio, and Colaiuta were the only three drummers in Zappa's band who could ever play the black page drum solo. But all three CAN play it, and if Frank said they could play it they could play it perfectly. They're all amazing drummers, get over it.

  • sucks*

  • terry "bozzo" suchs

  • how could he suck if he has played with zappa and have a reputation of being a great musician?

  • @Popex85 I'm not going to comment on whether he is better, but Terry Bozzio is a world renowned musician and plays some of the most complex drumming in history. And yes, he has a huge kit. He uses it. Chad Wackerman is also an accomplished musician. I like both of them and respect them, why can't you?

  • good but terry is much better

  • wasnt he a student of magadini?

  • I think what he's doing is a better way to do a solo then just starting out pretty much blazingly fast and crazy and then just getting slightly faster as a finale. He's playing the drums musically in each part as well as the arrangements of the part. If he's the nerdy guy that played for Zappa like I think he is, I used to not like him but he won me over.

  • That may be. Opinions vary. Its just how ever you like to do it or whatever your feeling. I don't know if I like Chad's solos any better than others, but I do like them.

  • I think you're thinking of Terry Bozzio

  • i know him and his brother personally.

his cousin is my history teacher

and that cousin of his also happens to be the cousin of fergie. weird huh?

  • make a vid and prove it :)

  • Yeah right! That;s why he played with Zappa! If you think you're better, prove it!

  • i do not need to prove it man. cause i'm cool and eficent :D

  • How's it going with the brushes mate?

  • no wonder he's the only guy in the world who can keep up with bozzio.

  • Really? The only guy in the world that can keep up with bozzio? Yea, right, buddy you got a lot to learn if thats what you really think.

  • Yeah. No one can keep up with Terry Bozzio.

  • Are you being sarcastic? I hope you are. My comment was dissing bozzio. I don't think he is a very good drummer at all.

  • Are YOU being sarcastic? Terry Bozzio played for Frank Zappa at age 16. He invented the one-hand ostinato. He's in Modern Drummer's Drum Gods. He's the artist in residence on the Drum Channel, and is clinician of the year award twice from Modern Drummer and once from Drum magazine, as well as drummer of the year from Drum magazine. He's a drumming legend, man.

  • No, I'm not being sarcastic. Everyone has there own opinions man. I don't care about of his awards and accomplishments. I just think he is a very overrated drummer. I mean, he is ok but I just think he is far from great.

  • @silasjones04 I know this is a bit late seeing that your comment on Bozzio was 7 months old, but....................What could possibly be the reason you think he is'nt a great drummer? For some odd reason I am curious. I've seen the guy, and he is un-freaking-real. Just wondering...............................

  • awesome but his independence fails him abit at about 1:55

  • GREAT DRUMMER HES GOT STICK CONTROL AND THATS THE MOST IMPORTANT. rythms great but its about wat u can do with your hands like buddy rich 4 example best drummer ever becus that stick control and stick control cums speed

  • Yeah, because speed is totally the most important part of music.

    /Sarcasm.

  • saw chad early this year in uk with holdsworth the nicest guy in the world and for me the best drummer

  • I saw him in L.A. with Alan Holdsworth in '93. He is so scary good and there is no surprise he and Holdsworth connect so well. Both of them are on a different musical plane than most.

  • The musicality in his drumming as well as the way he moves remind me of Terry Bozzio. Absolutely sick drumming.

  • funny you should say that cause him and Terry did a dvd together, some of their videos are on here, they're pretty mint too.

  • He's a fantastic drummer but I can't look at him without thinking of the kid in The Sixth Sense.

  • wackerman hahahaha so ein wixxer

  • Amazing limb independance on this guy....

  • @marcdrumz for sure zappa knew what he was doing

  • Comment removed

  • i love how the whole video is filled wtih all this crazy technical shit and thats what you notice

  • that snare is CRISP

  • amazing drummer. really cool guy too.

  • groso

  • oke dude,will check em out!thanks!

  • how do i play independence as good as him?are there any links on youtube?

  • a good place to really get your independance going is the new breed by gary chafee ... also , advanced techniques for the modern drummer will help as well .... advanced funk studies by rick latham .... those three books will really get you going

  • You mean New Breed by Gary chester!

  • ha ... my bad ... i always call Chester Chafee and vice versa .... thanks man .

  • Haha don't worry about it! =-)

  • the only way to play independence is to sit behind your drums and play play play and play some more..

  • he gives me lessons .

  • lucky guy

  • Wackerman wacks those drums great!

  • what is his son's name because I MAY take lessons from him.

  • Jesus Christ

  • be serious.

  • I wasn't aware of a baddass son but Chad's bro Brooks is the man as well.

  • His son's name is......... God Himself II

  • He is my Drummer Hero... The best.

  • Mine too. =)

  • I want his drums.

  • his drums sound beautiful

  • i wish i could tune mine that good.....

  • dw, the best!!!

  • Chad, you're my fav!!!

  • Guys, the first solo is in 7/8. The bass drum pattern is 7 as well. I think the guy below over complicated things.

  • I've commented on this on other message boards and I am so psyched about this that there seems to be this shift in the priority of drummers latley and the drumming community from this extreme almost aerobic style that we have had in the last eight years or so back to consistent playiers; Chad Wackerman being one of the most enduring. Players like Thomas Pridgen and Todd Suchermann all represent that shift back to musicality along with technical prowless

  • Thomas Pridgen is a motherf--ker on the drums! such a beast.

  • its in 4/4 , you know that because of the bass drum pattern ... solid 4/4 ... the time only sounds odd because of the odd groupings he plays over the 4/4 foundation ...another thing he does a lot of triplets but he groups them in two`s . if you arent used to hearing them grouped like that it is easy to get lost . there are also the polyrhythmic 5`s , 7`s , and 9`s . sometimes he jams odd numbers within a beat and sometimes he spreads them over even 16ths using accents to make the odd groupings

  • Well Said

  • nicely said, though its wrong,,,, sorry but it's in 7/8, you're over complicating it all. Just check out for example 00:54 forward, when he's doing the cymbal accents. First a grouping of 4, then 3... 4+3 = 7 :) yes you can tell by the bass drum, but it also tells you that it's in 7/8ths... sorry...

  • makes me want to brush up on my polyrhythms.

  • Seeing him or Bozzio make me feel myself ridiculous.Once I took lessons in drumming, but soon discovered my lack of talent.I sold my primitive drumkit, but still I'm a fan of drums and beats.Recently I was thinking about buying an electric drumkit (due to lack of space),but seeing these vids I'm not sure if I can get close even to Chris Slade (of AC/DC).

  • hey gyeszno, who cares how close or far you get, just do it and play with your balls, thats about it it, there is no better or worse, go for it!

  • Don't play with your balls, that hurts !

  • just remember to play nice

  • just a thought. WHATEVER you do in life, someone will probably be better than you, but u should still enjoy playing.

  • Play for you!! Just focus on how you play. Yeah I had the same problem I watch this dudes and I think "They play so cool" But then I said one day i could be one of that drummers, i better practice. Take care. Saludos desde Mexico.

  • Bravo

  • what time signature is this in?

  • its mixed meter, so there are a lot of groupings going on

and the toms are tuned in major steps, like a major scale, its all reall intense

yeah that bar around 1:50 wouldn't have a time signature, like Udo peices, just notes and a BPM

    this guy is great

  • Clearly, drumming has an effect on aging. He saw Hendrix live yet he hasn't aged since he played in Frank's band.[Portrait of Dorian Gray anyone?]WTF?! He kills in every band I've seen him with. Check him with Holdsworth in "Live at Yoshi's" dvd. He nails Tony Williams' ride cymbal patterns[spooky actually] Formidable stick control & chops.

  • This guy's dad is the Jazz band teacher for my school!!!

  • make a jazz noise here is awesome

  • i'd kill for that drumset.

  • love the toms <3

  • Good for you... (bored)

  • amazing

  • 1:55-2:00 awesome!! i love chads cymbals they sound amazing!!!!!

  • they are paiste signatures

  • Faboulous player, beautiful sound, lovely and relaxed. pure class

  • chad is my hero

  • I always reckoned Chad was absolutely superb at accompanying Zappa's solos - not many people doubt his technical ability, but I think a lot of people underrate his musicality.

  • Chad IS underrated, I guess because he doesn't show off like some ppl, he plays the song instead. Anyone who doubts his abilities should definetly check out the cd- "Frank Zappa The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life". IT's a great live double cd.

  • hes a percussionist

  • CW = AWESOME

  • i saw bozzio, minniman, and wackerman live in dover, and yea...i shit in my seat..as it were

  • "When it matters, choose Vic Firth" sounds like a condom ad.

  • Hahahaha...that's a classic line right there.

  • I saw chad sit in for Chester Thomson with the Fire Merchants, and he sight-read the whole set cold. It was amazing.

  • This guy stayed with Frank longer than Terry or Vinnie, so you know he can read flyshit. Chad is very underrated and a great drummer and influence on me from as far back as 1980 when I saw him with Zappa.

  • jungle classey music

  • Chad Wackeram played tinsel town rebellion too, but Vinnie recorded it, anyway its hard to compare Bozzio, Colaiuta or Wackerman, they re all monsters!! Personally i prefer Wackerman, very focused, technically perfect with a lot of feeling too, its hard to explain and my english sucks, peace.

  • maxbouvrie: don't want to sound like a smart ass, but Bozzio was 25 when he joined Zappa and it was Vinnie Colaiuta on Tisnel-town Rebellion.

By the way, Chad Wackerman is ace!

  • Haha...some guys post negative comments on the greatest artists in the world, showing their ignorance. Always fun.

  • Great video, thank you !

  • this was related to tomorrowsgone

  • Chad Wackerman and Terry Bozzio are great friends and great drummers..why are we always making silly comparisons? Long live Chad Wackerman.

  • Mania que este bando de cagados tem de ficar criticando aí e comparando a outro batera

    VÃO TOMAR NO CU

    Assiste e cala a boca

TOCA MELHOR ????? NÃO ?????????entao porra

    Gringos do caraleo

Se quiserem entender o que eu disse, VÃO TRADUZIR!

  • you are such a nobody. hey you can fuck? so fuck off!

  • chaaaaaaad

  • He's so much better without Terry Bozzio.

  • Bozzio does really, in my opinion suck at drumming. He has only a giant kit to show off, and he can either beat the shit outta his drums really fast with no syncopation, or weird african-ish music.

  • I wouldn't go as far as to say Bozzio sucks. Remember The Black Page he did with Zappa?

  • He doesnt suck.... but he just plays really fast riffs and crap, im not into that. Im into like more of a coordination oriented style. He is a very artistic drummer, and i give him so much credit for that

  • bozzio dosent suck, he played with zappa when he was 17.

he is incredible just listen to tinsel town rebelion its amazing for a 17 year old.

  • tinseltown rebillion was vinnie colaiuta

  • no way! really! but he is still veerry good.

  • The cymbal work this guy does is what all drummers should strive for.

  • cool drumming! i hear lots of bozzio influences...

  • that kit is so nice, what equipment does heuse to have everything on without a drum rack?

  • wow. "tasteful" is the word, i guess :D

  • Chad is one of the greatest drummers ever, no wonder Zappa chose him for his band AND kept him for at least 8 years.

  • I love this guys playing.

  • i saw this beast at a clinic
