Matt Johnson is a born, natural musician who doesn't have to rely on stage presence, or latest fads; his lyrics do all that is necessary to have presence of talent and musicianship that can't be imitated by any one. Love his material.
Matt Johnson is a born, natural musician who doesn't have to rely on stage presence, or latest fads; his lyrics do all that is necessary to have presence of talent and musicianship that can't be imitated by any one. Love his material.
Paddy says to Mick, "I tink oi've got sumtin stuck in me troat and I cant breathe properly" Mick says, "Are ya chocking?". Paddy replie, "NO, I'm Fucking serious!".
I met Keith Joyner (guitarist) before he joined the the. He was in a band called Seven Simons (about 1988 or 89 I think) playing a very small venue in Athens Ga. called the Uptown Lounge. My room mate in college either went to the same church or went to high school with him at Marist. Can't remember which. I was amazed and happy for him when he got the job in the the because I was always a big Johnny Marr fan. Those are some big shoes to fill.
Every time a hear this song and "This is the day" from my vinyl records, a little teardrop fall down from my eyes and I come back to my 18 years in the 82's.....
As much as I love his music -I have all his 4-5 albums (I even had his 1st album in vinyl) - I was saddened to discover he is a simpleton and anti semitic dude.
Dear 'nirsul'- I didn't mean to insult to you with my earlier comment ... and I'm sure you are not high on psycho-tropic preparations, but what you said about Matt Johnson struck me as idiotic to say the least, to claim that he is a simpleton made me realize that you actually have never listened properly to the 4-5 albums that you claim to have..
Mind Bomb is definitely my favorite The The album. My least favorite of let's say "the four" is Infected because it used too many cliché 80's effects and lame female background vocals.
Great song. "The howling wind blows the litter as the rain falls, as street lamps pour orange coloured shapes through your window" How can Soul Mining & Infected be so great whilst Mindbomb is such a pretentious crock of shit?
..i think you misjudge mindbomb.. it is different... and fantastic in a whole new way... its got a lot of soul & melancholy and thus depth... musically arranged and carryed out by some of the best musicians of all time
I was here and my god it was amazing! The whole set was so energetic. I went to see them a few weeks later with my brother at Brixton Academy - bear in mind that this was right at the height of the IRA threats - Matt Johnson and the rest of the band came out in balaclavas and fatigues. The whole place went deadly quiet ...we all thought...just for a min that we were gonners! Talk about 'making an entrance!'
It's a good job that I wasn't in the audience at Reading in 1993 as there is a very good chance that I might have spontaneously combusted with joy at seeing The The play Uncertain Smile live.
I love Matt Johnson...since when I listened to this fantastic song...and I was 13! but I didn't knew who's singin int...since Infected... well I bought Soul Mining and imagine my surprise... a stupid guy that begins to jump in his stupid bedroom listening to an Uncerrtain Smile...
But I only ask one thing for... there's many stupid stuff in record shops... but nothing on dvd about this Fantastic ARTIST!
I couldn't agree more - if ever there is a song writer who can put the most incisive lyrics to spine chilling tunes, Matt Johnson is that person. Oh when will he tour again. I don't care which continent.
I think it's DC Collard who is banging out the tune on the ivories. He was the piano player on the Dusk Tour which took the band around the world in 1993.
One of the best piano parts ever in modern music along with one of the best lyrics-"A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes, Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile" I get chills every time I hear this one!!!
The guy on the piano looks too young to be Jools Holland even for 1993. Probably a session musician. The piano playing on the Soul Mining track is more accomplished. However lovely to see the song performed live.
the piano bit I have been waiting 25 years to see the guy actually play it....I've 'air' played it about a million times!! It's as perfect as music can get...
Great stuff. I got really into the The back in the 80s in my student days and this song was always my favorite. Great musicians and great melodies. Matt Johnson is one fiendishly talented guy
when this song first came out, i was in a fender-bender on the corner of La Cienega and Melrose (Ma Maison) and the only thing I heard was this song coming out of the car that hit me! absolutely scrumptious!
OH FREAKING WOOOOW!!!!!! This is positively brilliant!!! Have seen Matt/The The in concert about 10 times since 1983 and this song never ever gets old. just BRILLIANT!!
Was at this gig - I hope Matt brings out some new stuff soon - Infected was a major major album of my teenage years and the 12" of Uncertain Smile simply the best 12" ever!
fantastic song, saw him rehearse at Sheffield Leadmill a few days before the show. I was on crutches with a broken leg and had to escape from hospital to see it, the doctor was not impressed
want to see this guy again. love to shake his hand have a drink chat to him then get his autograph.(never sell it) been into THE THE since he started. part of my life. my name is matt johnson.
wow, never seen this one before, many many thanks....
....got to be honest as a Matt diehard and say that the new stuff just don't cut it anymore....so sad as everything up to hanky panky was so 'perfect' it almost hurt!
Fantastic. One of the songs ever. Matt is a genius and under-rated musician/writer. By the way The Beat with Gary Crowley was the best music show in Britain showing stuff like The The..why did it end?Gary Crowley knows his stuff, bring him back to telly
Christ yes, the album version is the best by far, where everything just comes together perfectly.
In fact Soul Mining is just a fabulous, fabulous album. How The The remained out of the mainstream with albums like that and Infected will forever remain a mystery to me.
