  • Matt Johnson is a born, natural musician who doesn't have to rely on stage presence, or latest fads; his lyrics do all that is necessary to have presence of talent and musicianship that can't be imitated by any one. Love his material.

  • Move over David Cameron - this guy needs to sort the piss stinky shopping centres on the new side of town ....

  • great looking gig!!!!!!!

  • orange coloured shades....pours...ace one of the best, true hacendia tune

  • hats off to the man, the the and the amazing matt johnson. my personal favourite. uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile

  • I have listened to Matt Johnson for 25 years. He is still one of the best ever.

  • hey ... you posted on my birthday .... nice

  • Unicos!!!....esta melodìa me llega al alma...tantos recuerdos.......

  • he is spectacular!

  • Paddy says to Mick, "I tink oi've got sumtin stuck in me troat and I cant breathe properly" Mick says, "Are ya chocking?". Paddy replie, "NO, I'm Fucking serious!".

  • I wish i was young again. this takes me back. Real music for real music lovers.

  • I met Keith Joyner (guitarist) before he joined the the. He was in a band called Seven Simons (about 1988 or 89 I think) playing a very small venue in Athens Ga. called the Uptown Lounge. My room mate in college either went to the same church or went to high school with him at Marist. Can't remember which. I was amazed and happy for him when he got the job in the the because I was always a big Johnny Marr fan. Those are some big shoes to fill.

  • brilliant if i could turn back time i would have got matt johnson and sting to write together fantastic music and great lyrics

  • where are this nice time gone ???

  • It really parts of good music is the best guitar....GRETCHS...

  • WOW, love the addition of the acoustic guitar. that is EPIC!

  • grand morceau...tx Matt

  • Classic! Many great memories from this song....

  • This is my favourite song of all time. It imprinted onto my soul and is part of who I am.

  • A very big hit of 80' and a very big musician.

Every time a hear this song and "This is the day" from my vinyl records, a little teardrop fall down from my eyes and I come back to my 18 years in the 82's.....

    Thanks Matt from Italy !!!!!

  • Matt's the man!!!!

  • An awsome rendition

  • EIGHTIES FOREVER !

  • Stop cutting me youtube you fucking halfwitts, Fuck off i pay your fucking wages ..DONT FORGET THAT. wankers.

  • Great song!

  • Please ...Encore !!

  • Love it!

  • Bellissmo pezzo!!!

  • 1993, has MJ performed since? or has he just disappered?

  • Everything this guy has ever written has meaning and was well before it's time...mind bomb is a perfect example although Infected is right up there.

  • Brilliant!!!!...Thanks for sharing!

  • Fantastic to whomever posted this. I always thought one of the guitarists used a capo, then it was removed. But I never knew for sure.

    Now I can see it.

    5 Star performance.

  • As much as I love his music -I have all his 4-5 albums (I even had his 1st album in vinyl) - I was saddened to discover he is a simpleton and anti semitic dude.

  • You know that for sure do you?

  • What are you talking about? Are you tripping? Take care...

  • Dear 'nirsul'- I didn't mean to insult to you with my earlier comment ... and I'm sure you are not high on psycho-tropic preparations, but what you said about Matt Johnson struck me as idiotic to say the least, to claim that he is a simpleton made me realize that you actually have never listened properly to the 4-5 albums that you claim to have..

  • You disappoint me 'nirsul'... and by the way, anti-semitic?.. please explain...

  • Mind Bomb is definitely my favorite The The album. My least favorite of let's say "the four" is Infected because it used too many cliché 80's effects and lame female background vocals.

  • Aw, I wanted to start a band called The Thes (pronounced The Thuhs).

    Guess it's already taken.

  • What a great voice. What a great performance...No studio needed here.

  • Great song. "The howling wind blows the litter as the rain falls, as street lamps pour orange coloured shapes through your window" How can Soul Mining & Infected be so great whilst Mindbomb is such a pretentious crock of shit?

  • ..i think you misjudge mindbomb.. it is different... and fantastic in a whole new way... its got a lot of soul & melancholy and thus depth... musically arranged and carryed out by some of the best musicians of all time

  • Well why don't you go and listen to the Pet Shop Boys then?

Better that, than wasting time making fatuous comments about music you hate.

  • Oh dear I fancied Matt!

  • one of the greatest song writers of all time

  • woooow!!!! what a performance. Excellent!!!!

  • The first time I heard this it was about 4:30 a.m. and I was tripping on ecstasy...been a fan ever since!

  • I was here and my god it was amazing! The whole set was so energetic. I went to see them a few weeks later with my brother at Brixton Academy - bear in mind that this was right at the height of the IRA threats - Matt Johnson and the rest of the band came out in balaclavas and fatigues. The whole place went deadly quiet ...we all thought...just for a min that we were gonners! Talk about 'making an entrance!'

  • It's a good job that I wasn't in the audience at Reading in 1993 as there is a very good chance that I might have spontaneously combusted with joy at seeing The The play Uncertain Smile live.

    oscilatorbank, you are THE MAN!

  • Get a load of Kubiszewski on drums.

  • I love Matt Johnson...since when I listened to this fantastic song...and I was 13! but I didn't knew who's singin int...since Infected... well I bought Soul Mining and imagine my surprise... a stupid guy that begins to jump in his stupid bedroom listening to an Uncerrtain Smile...

But I only ask one thing for... there's many stupid stuff in record shops... but nothing on dvd about this Fantastic ARTIST!

    WHY?

  • the guy is a hidden star

  • this is as gud as it gets , sos sos sos sos oooooooooooooo gud

  • this is good stuff

  • Saw them in Germany Bizzare Festival Loreley 1990

as the top Act after The Ramones it was a great

    end of this day

  • I happened upon them by luck in Nawlins at the house of blues,Awesome show and Henry Rawlins played the next night !

  • Henry Rollins maybe :-))

  • enjoying this song since 1983!

    nice band, by the way.

  • the drummer kick ass on this performance.

  • Matt Johnson is one of the most under rated musicians ever

  • I couldn't agree more - if ever there is a song writer who can put the most incisive lyrics to spine chilling tunes, Matt Johnson is that person. Oh when will he tour again. I don't care which continent.

  • I think it's DC Collard who is banging out the tune on the ivories. He was the piano player on the Dusk Tour which took the band around the world in 1993.

  • I would give my left gonad to see these guys live.. great song and video.

  • I was there, First the the's live presentation - Estádio das Antas, Oporto Portugal. matt, jonny marr, etc

  • Looks like Reading festival 93

  • One of the best piano parts ever in modern music along with one of the best lyrics-"A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes, Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile" I get chills every time I hear this one!!!

  • The guy on the piano looks too young to be Jools Holland even for 1993. Probably a session musician. The piano playing on the Soul Mining track is more accomplished. However lovely to see the song performed live.

  • Grandi!!!!!!

  • meglio dal vivo che in studio.

  • the piano bit I have been waiting 25 years to see the guy actually play it....I've 'air' played it about a million times!! It's as perfect as music can get...

  • God I love his lyrics and rhythms! Funny I never realised how sexy he was at the time!!! Now I find him really attractive ;o)

  • is this from glasto?

  • Is this out on dvd?

  • Long live T' T', as well call them in Yorkshire

  • one of the unsung heros in music over the last thirty years!!more please!

  • fuckin brilliant

  • the piano... amazing. The piano solo is really free and enjoyable in this song

  • Great perfomance!

  • Great stuff. I got really into the The back in the 80s in my student days and this song was always my favorite. Great musicians and great melodies. Matt Johnson is one fiendishly talented guy

  • ACOJONANTE,la mejor cancion de la historia

  • marvellous!

  • muito prazer.

    quem és?

  • when this song first came out, i was in a fender-bender on the corner of La Cienega and Melrose (Ma Maison) and the only thing I heard was this song coming out of the car that hit me! absolutely scrumptious!

  • well it could o been worse it could of been "WHAM" no pun intended lol ...

great tune though & a class band ..

  • This is absolutely one ingenius song!!!

  • timeless....

  • Absolutely great stuff, I´ve never seen this version befor, great!! Thanx for posting it.

  • wow, I love this stuff. 'The The' are totally awesome.

  • Love the song; and although this version is good, it does not do it justice. Such is the risk of different versions to compare from.

    Wondeful song though.

  • Was at this gig - I hope Matt brings out some new stuff soon - Infected was a major major album of my teenage years and the 12" of Uncertain Smile simply the best 12" ever!

  • Geeez, goodtimes. :)

  • heavenly

  • fantastic song, saw him rehearse at Sheffield Leadmill a few days before the show. I was on crutches with a broken leg and had to escape from hospital to see it, the doctor was not impressed

  • want to see this guy again. love to shake his hand have a drink chat to him then get his autograph.(never sell it) been into THE THE since he started. part of my life. my name is matt johnson.

  • i changed my name to matt johnson

  • love this love it all. from matt johnson .

  • wow, never seen this one before, many many thanks....

....got to be honest as a Matt diehard and say that the new stuff just don't cut it anymore....so sad as everything up to hanky panky was so 'perfect' it almost hurt!

  • I´m a lucky man!

I saw him in the summer of 1990 in Hamburg, Stadtpark.

Never heard such a voice again with perfect lyrics, too.

  • Amazing version. My life will not be fulfilled until I see Matt in concert.

  • F....n excellent!

    Thanx fot this great live!

  • Awesome. Matt Johnson is a genius. The The was so underratted. So glad that I can watch them again.

  • banging good stuff

  • Talk about goosebumps; my wife and I saw them on this tour in the US, back in '93. It was incredible! the The is amazing!

  • wow, you can really hear they got a groove going on there....

  • that was absolutely wonderful ,goosebumps and a tear in my eye

  • I didn't realize I could see this nowadays...great song! Thanks YouTube for the opportunity!

  • Its tough to find a better song than this. Nice job!

  • Este Homem é um Senhor. Se houver alguém que hoje em dia faça musica com esta alma toda eu como o meu chapéu.

  • Experimenta ouvir Roger Waters

  • Eu disse hoje em dia....não falei de passado.

  • Nem eu...

  • Piano Sooo-loooo

excellent - kinda like the Style Council should have been....

BTW I assume you all know Matt Johnson's record Burning Blue Soul? if not, check it out, do ya selves a favour, etc...

  • ja nao se faz musica assim!lindo

  • Why the The are not huge is a mystery to me. Total class.

  • still good!

  • Can anybody tell me where to find the song Giant from the Soulmining album on U tube, juast got to hear it.

  • Got engaged to "This Is the Day". Kind of an unconventional wedding song, but if you listen to the words.....

  • Yeah, yeah...I get it. 5 stars!!!

  • C´est beau..quel bonheur.peace

  • ho sempre amato questo pezzo..grazie

  • I'd pay all I have on me for a ticket to see him live

  • someone got the piano notes? (midi file?)

  • The The music will always live

  • Brilliant song, one of the best ever.

  • incredible song, its very very good performance

  • CROWLEY YOU'RE A PRICK!!!!

  • This is just the best track ever. Album version with Jools on Piano at full volume takes the skin off your back. GO AND BUY IT> SOUL MINING.

  • Christ yes, the album version is the best by far, where everything just comes together perfectly.

In fact Soul Mining is just a fabulous, fabulous album. How The The remained out of the mainstream with albums like that and Infected will forever remain a mystery to me.

  • how come newer bands cant come up with great music like these ?

  • Fricken AWESOME!!!

Why cant we have music like this today!!!!

MAN, The 80's kick ass over anything we had in the 90's and in the 00's!!!
