  • Man, this is unbelievable!

  • I wish Mike had kept his asides and comments to himself. Also, It seemed like he cut the performance of short with his "thank you." Control freak and a showboat.

  • wow

  • This concert is available in various "bootlegs" in circulation. This concert wasn't released because of "The Beach Boys" laid back performance and different arrangements of their songs made by Brian Wilson. I personally like their performance because it is very stripped down and their harmonies are still quite good. Too bad it wasn't official released.

  • Shit!!!! To have been there...can you imagine!!!!

  • You have great taste Son!

  • You sure this is 67? Sounds later.

  • @morninggloryseed This is Brian singing. I know that he sang in Hawaii in 67. The only other time it could be is Seattle 71 (?) and a couple of Whiskey a go go performances in the early 70s. The next time he played live his voice had changed.

  • Seattle happened in '70. Brian was replacing a sick Mike for some odd reason or another. Too bad the only source for that concert is a shitty audience recording.

  • Is there any other recordings from this show???

  • @TheSom03 "In August of 1967, the Beach Boys went to Hawai'i to record a concert that was to be released as the live "Lei'd In Hawaii" album." It was never released. This song is a bonus track on the Beach Boys Concert / Live in London CD. Other than this, I'm not sure if any other recordings are available. I know that some of the rehearsals for this concert were recorded and are out there somewhere.

  • Wow, this is LIVE? Absolutely amazing !!!

  • Awesome performance by Brian!!!!!! God I would LOOOOOVE to see video for this...does anyone know if there's any in existence?

  • spectacular version

  • Incredible -- real and soulful.

  • mike love is the one villain to dislike this.

  • Fantastic Version....Thanks!

  • This is what music is for. To make our hearts beat faster and prove that life is beautiful!

  • Unbelievable! Spectacular! Amazing harmonies! The part at 2:32 when their voices sound like bells is one of the coolest things I've ever heard.

  • Haunting in the studio version. Happy in this live version.

  • Rock On, Brian!

  • fuck dark side of the moon!

  • The song feels very "sloppy", but still a nice performance. Very hard song to replicate live.

  • @Canaveral305

Its a song that's is almost impossible to re create live on stage because of the amount of vocal and instrumental overdubs done on the studio version.Having said that , i rather like this stripped down live version.

  • @dmcguire70 Well, Brian Wilson managed to replicate it incredibly (the video's on youtube), but he had a lot of musicians, yeah.

  • Why won't somebody tell these 3000 virgin chicks to shut up!

  • Not so - Brian's last full show was February 18th 1965, Worcester MA.

  • AHH this is awesome!! I wish i could seeeee it!

  • Great! Rare stuff..... The crowd of 1967 must of been like " Yes the Beach Boys are fully back"

    Awesome stuff though!

  • the person who disliked is a Villain!

  • Rock On, Brian!

  • with Brian

  • umm..., no

you can't make better music than this.

    keep faking, fakers

  • Who can say if it's the most important, every song from Smiley Smile are important; what an amzaing album!

  • @myelinsheaths I can never appreciate Smiley Smile as a seperate entity from Smile. It will always be the whimper instead of the bang Smile should have been.

  • Has this been changed since I first favorited this? The earlier version had Brian castigating the audience with something like 'let him sing' or so-must have been during Carl's part. I saw Brian in Germany in 2004 and he had no problem scolding an audience when they got in the way of the music (that night the problem was smoking). Anyway, just curious but thanks for putting these up.

  • @roddymoore

I just answered my own question. 'he's singing!' shortly before Carl started his part had been cut. I would put it back in. It is reflective of how Brian took and takes the music seriously, then and now.

  • @roddymoore The song you thinking of is GOD ONLY KNOWS where Brian loses his cool with the audience.

  • Call me weird...but in the way hes singing here I feel a slight echo of his voice of today...mostly in the first verses..maybe it's just me

  • @jwild611 well he is the same person...

  • @northberlin yea but his singing voice went through quite an evolution

  • 5-star'ing is too easy

  • Quite amazing hearing Brian sing this, it is quite unlike his usual voice !

In fact, it reminds me much more of Freddy Mercury in his very first albums (cf. the March of the Black Queen for instance)

  • Actually you are right. Brian performed both nights in Hawaii. Carl and Al played bass for an absent Bruce and they actually went into the studio and re did the tracks since the bass played by Al and Carl was not up to par!

  • @DefMode66 how do u kno that carl and al played bass?

  • Wow.

  • Brian sounds amazing here

  • @Huddiethegreat Pretty sure that's Al singing lead.

  • I though Al only sang the course for Heroes and villains? im may be wrong though,

  • @Huddiethegreat You're probably right. They all sound great to me! Did you hear the God Only Knows from 67 that's on youtube? Amazing.

  • @MikeyRed76 That is not Al singing lead, anyone can hear that it is Brian singing lead here....

  • thanks so much for this live version pretty rare brian is the best and i would say smile is the greatest record in the world

  • Oh- 2:47 - don't you love that right there? The harmonies - how they transition - this is like the height of their genius right here - no wonder - Brian returns. Thanks for the info and thanks again for this wonderful audio.

P.S. Beach Boys, I Love You.

  • THIS IS AMAAAZING! UNBELIEVABLE!. Wow! - i have goosebumps. Outstanding - a precious moment in time...

MY GOODNESS - Heroes for sure.

THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this. Thank you Beach Boys. I am speechless. Beach Boys - you are all alone at the top.

  • this was out of control amazing

  • holy...fucking epic!

  • Such a minimalist performance, I'm sure Brian would have loved to have an orchestra for this performance

  • I think this was recorded about the same time as Smiley Smile so Brian was kind of into the minimalist thing at that moment.

  • I don't think Brian was ever *into* minimal arrangements. He was a human wall of sound!!

Smiley Smile was a product of him being pressured to backpeddle away from the direction he really wanted - and that would be the oh so intricate productions of 1966 (think pet sounds, good vibrations, heroes & villians)

  • amazing how much better this song is live WITH brian...the boys seemed to have raised the bar vocally compared to what this sounded like live without him...

  • A tough task to pull this off back then especially with a small group in concert. Somehow, even with that , the intimacy of it comes across.

    John Hunter Phillips

  • this is so random but i love the way brian accentuates the word "city" in the songs first line... sometimes its the little nuances like that added together that make a good song/performance great!

  • Incredible! where did you get this?

  • HOOOOLLLLYYY SHITTTTTTTtaskl;datrj;osewrjanfas

    best shit ever

  • The minimalist arrangement musically takes away from it a bit... jeez they were such a big band back then you think Capitol would have let them have more resources at their disposal...

Vocals are totally on point, though, beautiful. Although this song in general reeks of Brian's growing mental instability at the time (especially in the chorus)... it's too bad

  • holy smokes.

    this is a gem

  • This is SUCH a gem. Listening to this makes me feel good to be alive..

  • cooool. really awesome. there's a recent dvd performance of this song on youtube and it's amazing too. brian must really dig singing this song.

  • ...In any case his voice sounds particularly nasally in this performance. Just a thought.

  • I never knew there was a live version from 67 featuring Brian on vocals :|

  • This is the best live version of Heroes and Villains I've heard thus far.

  • from the spanish and indian town home of the heroes and villains..unreal.

  • WOW!! 12/38 STARS(out of five)

  • Brian Wilson's voice is incredible.

Has there every been a better falsetto and a greater loss than his mid 60's voice?

    Superb!

  • Wonderful to hear this.

Truly a rarity, and it works really well - the harmonies are so hard to recreate but they achieve it here!

    Thanks!

  • what a rare recording!

  • Isn't this a great performance, Brian's so spirited!

  • This is awesome. I thought I'd heard every live Heroes and Villains track out there. This one is superb, IMO. It's nice to hear Brian sing the lead like on the recording.

  • I think this is from "Lei'd in Hawaii". I could be wrong, am I?

  • You are correct.

They recorded for a live album with Brian on keys and no Bruce. When they got there the group thought Brian would play bass. He informed them he would be on keys. Al and Carl shared the bass duties. A lot of klunkers but an awesome consert and lots of great harmonies. The entire show is available in bootleg form only. The God only knows cut has studio over-dubs of instruments not even on the stage!

  • Do you own any of the bootlegs, dognek15? I read somewhere that they didn't want to release this because it was of poor quality. I've heard only two songs from that concert: this one and Help YOU Rhonda, which both sounded good to me.

  • I have a CD copy of the show and the studio recordings they did after to synch up with the any live track that needed it. I bought it on ebay.

As you stated before, it is "Lei'd in Hawaii". Another rumor about this show is that Brian and Dennis were tripping. It is the only live performance recorded with Brian from the mid 60's to early 70's. Possibly the only performance he did.

  • Brian did a few shows in 1970. One of the shows in Seattle was recorded, I believe the bootleg is titled "A World Without Love." Brian subbed for Mike.

  • Learn something new everyday!

I will search for this show.

    Thanks.

  • is brian wilson in 1967?

  • Classic Beach Boys
