One thing I found is it you're not really diligent with the flux, the LED's tend to float on top of the puddle of solder rather than being drawn down onto the pad, hence the pushing down, but yeah the stick (toothpick) is a good idea. Found that at least metal tweezers tend to 'stick' too, the wood seems to work better. and yeah, if I would have done better coating the bottom of the LED with flux, would not have had the problem in the first place :-)
Rather then pushing the LED into the solder you should have just held it down on the pad that you put solder on with an orange stick or a pair of tweezer. That way you wouldn't have had the LED stick to the iron tip like it did here.
