poor man had bad luck to end up with the lions if he had an okay or even good O-line he would have broken every rushing record in the book and even won rings.
@Kunglao63 But that's the reason why he retired though. He didn't want to break Payton's record. Still though, it was an amazing feat Sanders did that in 10 years.
I'm a Packers fan, and I can say there is nothing like watching Barry Sanders run. I was sad to see him retire. Even if it meant giving up 300 yards to him every year.
Actually Sanders did play on a Lions team who had a tandem of record breaking wide outs. Herman Moore, Brett Periman, and Johnny Morton, which is why they got as far as the championship against the Redskins. The real issue with the lions has always been front office. No offensive line, no direction. Looks like that long tedious trend is finally ending. Sad and tragic that Swartz and company weren't in charge in the Barry years! Who knows how many rings and records would have accumulated.
The no O-line thing is a myth. He DID play with a couple pro bowl Offensive Linemen in his time.
Plus, he had Herman Moore on the outside. He wasn't a one-man show in Detroit, anyway. He definitely is one of the top two or three backs of all time, but I don't see why people feel the need to take away from Emmitt Smith's career to validate Sanders'.
Wasn't that great of a run, any running back with speed could have done that exact same thing, he juked once and it wasnt even that much. The rest was good vision and speed, something running backs today have.
Barry would totally have the rushing record had he played more than 10 seasons & easily if he played for a halfway decent team. I always felt he should have went somewhere else for @ least a few years, he would have truly would have become the best of all time. Too bad the Lions stunk. If he had even a mediocre offensive line, it would have been amazing to watch him.
Wow...even with Google and an autobiography, very few people here seem to know why Barry retired. The fact is that Barry could have left the Lions as a free agent back in '96. Instead, he chose to resign with Detroit. Two years later, he demanded to be traded. When the Lions' front office refused, he retired. So, saying the Lions ruined his career is just plain ignorant. Barry could have left. He chose not to.
man u all that say he is the worst or payton is better, ok let me get this strait he has no o line but a couple of Styrofoam blockers but yet he can make it to number 2 in the most rushing yrds thats like playing a video game and the other person has 2 handycaps
@bubbleman123ify Preach! That's my biggest pet peeve right there as to everyone saying that Payton (and even Emmitt Smith) are better than Barry. Here's the main and unspoken difference between them: Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith played for organizations that WANTED TO WIN (caps for emphasis) and the owners made damn sure it happened around once-in-a-liftetime-type players such as Walter and Emmitt. William Ford Sr. doesn't give a shit about a winning team, just a $ one. That's why Barry left.
The Lions went to the playoffs in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 1999. I know they weren't the cream of the crop but the widespread myth that it was Barry Sanders and a bunch of bums is pure horseshit.
@vdoeschaal You're referring of Walter Payton. The reason for Barry's retirement is all just speculation. If you ask me, it's because he had seen his proficiency declining and no improvement on his team's part so he decided to quit while he was ahead.
@mauiboynokaoi His proficiency wasn't declining. Barry was a freak of nature who rarely took a hit, thus he could extend his career. Barry's goal was to win a superbowl. I think deep down inside, his true goal was to get his own father to put him in the same category as Jim Brown and it got to the point where Barry felt he couldn't accomplish that goal on the Lions.
@sableghost Well as I said it's all speculation. I mean looking at his stats, you can see a gradual decline towards the end of his career. It was just my take on it.
@mauiboynokaoi Maybe your speculation, I actually had season tickets. Barry is the only back that I can remember that got FASTER as he aged. I noticed it when in his 9th or 10th season he seemed to never get caught like he did when he was younger. If you read his book he talks about how. Yes he get 2,053 yards in his 9th season. First time he had a fullback. Pull your head out.
The Lions did not want to lose him to another team. He carried the team. He wanted to go to another team. Damn Lions were thinkin if we can;'t have him no one can and thats exactly wat happened. I watched Barry Sanders not Lions.
Yep that's the whole reason I watched the Lions and came to games too. I was at the 1992 game against the Cowboys in 1992. Silverdome was nuts and Barry was spectacular that game. If someone told me then that this will be the only playoff game that the Lions would win in the Super Bowl era I would of told them they're nuts. lol guys us Lions fans are still nutty for following this shitty product that old man Ford creates.
he didnt retire because of his knees being shot he retired because the only reason for him to stay in the league was to tie/break the records and he didnt like the idea of that
@wintersnowboard ...You can research this, but I believe the REAL reason he retired is because Detroit (who SUCKED) stonewalled him and would not do him the honor he deserved and trade him.
That sucks, because he is arguably the best RB ever. If he had played 5 more seasons he would be hands-down the best RB ever. My top 5, in no particular order: Him, Emmitt Smith, Payton, Dickerson, Tomlinson
yes, but the Lions franchise was so committed to losing that Barry, who gave 110% every game, couldn't bear to be part of that pitiful culture anymore.
It's a travesty of the game that he didn't play for another franchise. At least lions fans have one good thing to be proud of.
@bio2020 defense wins championships.the lions had some good defenders here & there but as a whole they never had a shutdown defense.if they did i think they could have gotten to the superbowl 91 94 and 95. 97 too.those playoff teams had some offense back then and barry was the most electrifying player in the league
I said best back ever, not best run ever. I was considering the fact that he averaged close to 300 yards a season more then Walter and almost a yard more per carry then Emmit. Thanks, try again.
He would have gained 4,000 yards per year if he had been with the Cowboys in the early 90's.

The way he set up that defender is insane.
That run had no chance on the outside, yet he found a way to get through.
Just unbelievable, but that's vintage Barry right there. Making place that had no chance.
