Hey JGProperty, great tip about the bobby pin, these pins are easy to lose, so thanks for the tip! I LOVE these locks, had them about a year now, on 6 units and have been fantastic! Have you run into any problems with yours?
@LandlordingTV Hey I haven't had many problems other than a repeated problem with tenants keys randomly not working. Other than that the locks worked pretty well. I recently got back from the Mr.Landlord conference in St Luis and have started using the LandlordLocks(.)com locks. You should definitely give them a call. Now that I have switched over to their locks i wont be using anything else. Are you a Mr.Landlord member?
I installed the deadbolts on a vacant unit and gave the key to a painter. After the painter finished I was going to rekey for the new tenant and discovered that I did not have the special rekeying tool with me. I did have my wife along and she simply pulled a bobby pin from her hair, scratched off the plastic from the tip and used it to do the rekey. The new tenant was impressed. Now I know where we can get 100 rekeying tools in the hairspray aisle at Wal Mart for about $3.00.
Thanks for sharing information about this deadbolt. This deadbolt is actually called “Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt.” I did some research and found an online source that appears to have the lowest prices on these deadbolts. The company is Lock Supply Depot and their web site is wwwLSDLockdotcom I ordered a couple for evaluation and they arrived in 2 days.
The piece of metal is VERY small and thin, it would be hard to find a piece of metal to fit it properly (I haven't tried but I think it's too thin for a bent paperclip even), but if the Tenant were to change the lock, you still have a separate cylinder for your master key, which fits only bonded keys.
@dsmtsi Kwikset Key Control Deadbolts are on average about $35 depending on finish. If you can't find it in your local Home Depot or supply store you can special order them with Home Depot or Lowe's. They come in the Polished Brass and Satin Nickel.
@dsmtsi You're correct, anybody can rekey these as long as they have a working key. Once you give a key to a tenant, they can stick their key in there, and change it to whatever they want, BUT they can't rekey the landlord's lock, their key won't fit, and without a working key, they can't rekey it.
On a side note, I'm a locksmith of 13 years. Smartkey is garbage. Most of us won't sell them because they don't last. Like others said, they randomly stop working. I like regular Kwikset stuff tho.
I just bought mine and looking at the procedure before I start, thank you.

How are these locks working out for you? How many units do you have them installed on?

Thanks for your reply.
I just bought my first rental unit, get possession Friday, I am looking for this Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt but can't find it in my area.
All I could find was Weiser knock off's but they don't have the 2nd cylinder for the master key.
How much was the Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt?

Congratulations on your first rental property! Ah, yeah I would stick with Kwikset. You can get them at TrueValue, or Do It Best Hardware stores!

It seems like a great idea. My only concern would be the tenants being able to change the lock system to their own new keys.
How hard is is to push in the part that resets the lock without the master key tool? Could it be pushed in with any piece of metal?
