My mother tried driving her 2000 Toyota Sienna up the driveway after out driveway was frozen solid. The Sienna's right front tire couldn't grip and was lodged in the ice with the left pointlessly spinning.
My dad came home 5 minutes after in his 2000 Subaru Legacy, and he pulled into the driveway and into the garage like there was nothing.
@n2ocomet why not? similar weight the 335xi has just as good of front rear and mid differentials and it has better weight distribution than the legacy. my original comment meant no disrespect to the Subaru i love them but coming from a guy who has owned a wrx and a legacy through a couple hard washington winters i know that my current car the 335xi is also an amazing car in the snow and it would have no problem doing this...
You do realize this is based almost entirely on tires and not anything with AWD. Yes I understand the torque vectoring and split power but its all in the tires.
@chigasaki 06 u would hope a full size suv with twice the power could do what a crossover with 170hp can do.but unfortunately it cant i know i own one
lol this is so awesome. i got a 2011 impreza. im happy to see that it is actually capable of driving up a 30 degree incline on ice rather than my bmw which lost traction in a quarter inch of snow on flat ground.
Well, I am sure that this is 2.5i (four cylinder) and according to 10-spoke wheels it is "limited" version, what I don't know is if it is CVT or manual transmission? Can somebody please answer this? I am leaning toward CVT because I have't seen a limited without CVT (standard equipment) but this one might be custom order...
@sheky187 Subaru doesn't do custom transmission orders. Since 2006, all 2.5i Legacy's Limiteds are Auto or CVT. 2005 was the last model year that the 2.5i Legacy Limited came in a manual transmission.
Breaking New's comes on, they say.... THERE IS A MASSIVE SNOW STORM! THE STREETS ARE FILLED WITH SNOW AND ICE! STAY IN DOORS! DO NOT DRIVE OUT IN THIS!!!!!
@joewillgo We just had the first snow "storm" (3"-4", not much by Wisconsin standards) and as soon as they said that on the news, I ran outside, hopped in my Legacy, and made the snow-covered streets my bitch.
@SoDaSub Some cars have TC/ESC systems you have to turn off in order to have 4WD system to kick in (Mazda CX-7 I.e.) but even if you turn it off it will turn itself back on once your speed reaches 15mph.
@sheky187 Subaru's AWD system is integrated with the Traction and Stability control. It If the vehicles senses slippage, it will brake braked individually on the slipping wheels to transfer power left or right to the wheels that have traction. The center differential will handle moving power front and back. If you turn VDC off, it will turn back on over 35 mph for all Subarus except the WRX STI which has a permanent off mode.
@SoDaSub Center diff. right but this particular one has a clutch pack which to be honest I don't know if it transfers torque between left and right or just front to rear. However I am impressed by this video. Talking about slippage...my experience with SUbaru like this 2.5i CVT was only driving it through heavy rain and puddles on the highway (60 mph) and I didn't feel any issues such as hydroplaning...I wonder if the AWD system cuts the power on the front wheels once it detects hydroplaning too
@sheky187 The clutch pack does the same thing a center diff does. It transfers torque front and back. Left and right power transfer is handled by the VDC system braking on the slipping wheel to force power to the opposite wheel. AWD does not prevent or help in situations of hydroplaning. When a car hydroplanes, all 4 wheels are riding on a cushion of water. That leads to a complete loss of traction.

Pity he sold the Legacy after a gasket leak

Should have opted for that.
