I have one and she is one of my best friends, but like any dog its how they are raised. but I trust mine, I don't have kids yet but my sister does and when they come to see me once or twice a year she is not mean at all, even when they pull and tug and drive her nuts. she just looks at me like "Help" but never do to make me worry about her hurting them. i pass by one every morning with my alaskan malamute, the shar pei sounds like its having trouble breathing when it barks at my dog, and does this panting/snorting sound that sounds like a pig, idk i dont really like this breed that much, too odd looking for me, but thats just my opinion

I love this breed, but I would never dare get one today (at least not of the "westernized type", the meat-mouth), because of all the problems they have.

Amyloidosis, Shar-Pei fever, entropion, cherry eye, demodex, cutaneous mucinosis, seborrhea, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, narrow ear canals, hypothyroidism, luxating patella, hip dysplasia, bloat, cancer, allergies, and puppies must often have their eyelids "stacked".

But I would love to have a bone-mouth.

I had a shar-pei she was the most friendlies dog in the world. She loved being around people and loved other dogs. She never barked at anyone except when she was in the car. She didnt like people around her car. You come close to the car and she would bark up a storm. But if you walked into my house she would greet you like you wouldnt believe.

Of course it is always "overbreeding" that creates the health issues. Yeah right, if you have that many wrinkles (and so big) of course they have to be cleaned.

And here is were I wonder, would the chinese have been able to afford such constant cleaning?

And if the wrinkles are there for protecting internal organs, why are the most wrinkles on the face, neck and front body? Except for the neck, the other parts protect the organs with bones. So is that really the reason?

Used to have a shar-pei. Very family friendly, very nice to people. Good guard dog, but found him to be very bad with other animals, even with proper training. A few I know with shar-peis have the same issue.

@Giantpinkturtle they are cute, but believe me if one growls at you, you wanna get out the way. i work for a vets and we see a lot of shar pei's. whilst its harsh to generalise a breed, a lot of shar pei's are scared of strangers, and can be very aggresive. there are lots of genuinley nice shar pei's, but if you dont know the dog id approach with as much care as you would any other "aggresive" dog. there bites hurt like hell.

What an irresponsible video. I love our Shar Pei but they are NOT good pets. They are dog aggressive and people aggressive and they are extremely powerful dogs. We took ours in because it bit a child in the face and it needed a place to go so it wouldn't be euthanized. These dogs are bred to fight and kill, and that's what they do!!

Even a chihuahua can bit a child and destroy his face. And by the way, the video said that's Sharpei can be hard to train, seems responsible to me.

I rescued our Shar Pei which would probably have been euthanized for biting someone and having severe dog-v-dog aggression. I guess I will go back in time, find him earlier and try to train him better, I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

@MrVahire HEY everyone has a right ot their own opinion. you are probably not the worlds best dog trainer either. you can give a dog love and socialization, but in every case there are differences between all dog behaviour. some dogs don't get along with the same sex, it's instinctual, everyone makes their mistakes with raising a dog because we are humans, not dogs, there is alot of psychology differences between the two. i want to see how your dog behaves, before you judge.

i have a female shar pei called izzy or...izzymuss :P. she is a great dog but alas is rather, dopey... she is energetic and will run next to me on a bike but she dosent do anything you tell her to do unless she is getting something out of it. she is a total snob. but she is beautiful and very affectionate. ive spent over 4 grand on her all together now in vet bills for her eyes and after a dog attack so be prepared to fork out a bit. she is a great guard dog and will always protect us. great dog

Stella is my Shar-pei x Ridgeback and even though she has fewer wrinkles she has still had 2x lots of eye surgery, poor girl. But I must say she is an extremely loyal and protective dog, once she knows and trusts you she would guard you with her life.
