  • @MrSpiderman243, Thank you for watching and for the kind comment! Never give up, the more you practice the better you will get.

  • Hey Matt, I think you are very talented, you have that old school comic art thing going on . I would be most interested if you could draw and make a video of Daredevil from Marvel or the Mask from Darkhoarse comics Do you think you could?????

  • @Angelmefreaky31, Thanks for the kind words! I'll add your suggestions to the list of characters to draw for future videos.

  • Fantastic, I will introduce my cartoon class to this technique!!! Thanks Matt!!!

  • @MinorKeyDancing, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Just a reminder, though... I don't really suggest using a toothpick, as it's not a great tool for drawing. It works much better for getting food out from between teeth. Heh. I just wanted to show that it's not the tool that makes the drawing, it's the artist. The tool just helps the artists achieve whatever he or she is looking to achieve. That noted, I hope your class gets a kick out of the lesson. Thanks!

  • hey matt do u hang your drawings in your store ?

  • @SlayerWarren, I have only put up a few drawing at the shop, mostly shop-related stuff. I intend to put some up in the near future, though. Thanks!

  • BTW MY bro watched this he laughed at the beginning lol!!!!!!!!

  • You my friend are the most talented artist on you tube ever!!!!

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • that's sick man. i'm a big fan of freestyle inking, as i've said before. the lack of pencil use is awesome.

  • Wow this is rly awesome, How exactly long did it take you to finish the drawing?

  • Matt, you should draw War Machine taking on Ironman :3

    That'd be badass.

  • dude, your sharpie stuff looks professional

  • matt why dont you draw slash

  • did you ever read how 2 draw comics the marvel way?

  • did u smash the end up or is it still pointy?

  • The end was still fairly sharp. I didn't press down too hard when drawing.

    -- Matt

  • What do you sugest to do when shading? I love to draw, but I think my drawings would look a lot better if they were shaded and shaded properly. Any tips?

  • The most important things to consider when shading is where the light source is, and the depth that you are trying to represent with the thick and thin lines.

    -- Matt

  • I dont know how there's anything wrong with it. Purley amazing though since I feel like you make lines accindently then later on come back and make it into something.

  • Your a real artist!!

  • jaja damm man....its not look good? xD jaja damm ill buy that and put it in my wall man thats just a piece of heaven jaja

    well anyway ...great job

when i grow up i wanna draw like you man xD

  • do you ever color your art?

  • Sometimes.

    -- Matt

  • I can't draw anything without construction lines. That is amazing.

  • is that a shop that your at

  • Yep!

    -- Matt

  • wow, i thought i seen it all, but a toothpick, dude you are amazing

i have to know. you said you are self-taught. what types of references did you use to teach yourself how to draw so damn good????

  • I just absorb stuff, naturally, I suppose. I do try and pay attention to things like anatomy and perspective. Thanks for the kind comments!

    -- Matt

  • ah, cool.

im working on becoming a comic book artist, and was wondering if you have any tips, references, anything to help with my biggest problem: SHADING!!!!

i try hard to learn to shade, but i just cant get it to look right. any help?

    --Eric A.K.A Hellblaze123

  • how does it feel knowing that you're better than everyone else, sir?

  • Thanks for the very kind comment. I appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • Hey man, your work is awesome! And the music ws so beautiful! You have inspired me.

Thank you for those pleasant 10 minutes!

  • Thank you for the kind words!

    -- Matt

  • How did you learn how draw like that, did you teach yourself?

  • Yes, I'm self-taught.

    -- Matt

  • Cool, thanks.

  • It only took over a half hour, i was thinking more on the lines of 3 hours!!

  • How long does that take?!

  • The actual work took over half an hour because I had to keep dipping the toothpick (they don't hold ink too well).

    Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • USE A NIB

  • wow I gotta try to draw with a toothpick. good job sir

  • Holy Shit that is unreal

  • impressive

  • u r the best!!!!

    i also a very good artist but i always mess up wen i use a pen....but u r awesome!!!!

n good job on hulk, hes 1 of my favs n usually people mess him up but u did great!

  • Man... Where were the flaws? You had them covered up well if you did.

at the beginning I thought the hand was too far off, and maybe that might've thrown you off but then the perspective you made it in just brought it to life.

At least the foot not being drawn I thought might've ended up messy, till realizing you weren't going to insert it and it still fit perfectly.

Not 1 line out of place man... especially in toothpick. How hard is it to draw with it?

  • It's kind of a pain, drawing with a toothpick, and not something I really recommend. I just did it for the novelty of and to show that a person doesn't necessarily need to use a specific tool to draw.

    Thanks for the kind words!

    -- Matt

  • dude you could totally pass a gimmick as the toothpick artist with that skill. ._.

  • sharpie...fine line. what. i cnt do fine lines with sharpies

  • i swear you made the 90s show gREAT!!!! awsome id marry you if i was gay!!cos of drawings!!!!!!

  • youre an expert on the muscles

  • incredible matt!!! where did you learn???

you make me take a pencil and begin to draw.

  • Thanks! I am self-taught.

    -- Matt

  • hey Matt have you ever used a brush pen? you can get the line of a brush but you can use it like a pen, and you dont have to keep dipping it, if not id recomend it :)

  • Hi! Yep, I actually bought some PITT pens, which are brush pens. Thanks for the comment and suggestion!

    -- Matt

  • You hope it looks ok? That looks awesome! I live in south carolina, and I want to go to your shop really bad! If I come around there, I'll stop and buy a comic! Thanks for the video matt.

  • Thank you! I hope you can make it to the shop one day!

    -- Matt

  • matt can you please make some videos showing people how to draw like you like a lesson or something

  • Very well done, Matt!

  • Thanks, Rich!

    -- Matt

  • Hey you know ho i'd like to see you draw? Captain America. I know your rendition of this hero would be amazing. What did you use to study muscle anatomy? I need a little more practice in that field and your muscle structure is amazing.

  • Thanks for the kind words and suggestion. I am self-taught as an artist, and basically picked up on what I know anatomy from observing people and other people's artwork.

    -- Matt

  • You've got Incredible skillz

  • Thank you, Ben! You got some really incredible skillz yourself, but in a different medium.

    -- Matt

  • Under drawing - a new term added to my vocabulary.

It's just too bad I can't draw a distinguishable stick figure to save my life.

And who knew you could get such a sharp picture by doing that with tooth picks! Okay, well YOU knew, but I digress...

Hey, people used to write in a very similar way, so why not!

  • Thanks, Curt! The toughest thing about drawing with a tootpick is how often I have to keep dipping the toothpick in the ink well. Those things weren't designed to hold ink well. Heh.

    -- Matt

  • finaly!!!Ive been waiting 4 u 2 draw to hulk!!!Next could u do the silver surfer?(my fav superhero)

  • Hi! I will add him to the list! Thanks for the kind comment!

    -- Matt

  • dude are these action figures on the walls?? O_O can i have one?? :P

  • Those are action figures. Unfortunately, if I gave away product from the shop I would never make any money, so I can't give away the action figures. ;)

    -- Matt

  • yeah i know i was just kidding ;)

  • I"M GREEN WITH ENVY!!!! I enjoy when you draw Is that India ink? I like the technique, the toothpick/ink creates interesting line quality :O) What kind of paper are you using?

  • Yep, that is India ink. I used plain card stock paper. Thanks for the kind comment! Yayy!!!

    -- Matt

  • sssooo cooooooooooooool

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • Awesome job Matt!!!!!!

  • Thank you, Bay!

    -- Matt

  • great job man, have you ever went to Marvel or DC for a job?

  • It's been years since I sent anything to either company, but I still plan on publishing a comic series in the hopefully near future. If I could get on at those publishers, that would be cool!

    Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Matt, this is amazing! When you said that you weren't happy with certain parts, I twitched. I loved how you added the small tutorial in the begining and I think that peice of artwork is just breathtakingly superb. I wouldn't be suprised if you drew Superman with a chair, you draw great with anything.

    -Deni

  • Thank you very much, Deni! I really appreciate your kind words!

    -- Matt

  • wow thanks that was soooooo NICE! and thanks again ur the best marvel artist there is.

  • Thank you for the very kind words! I appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • Interesting watching your drawing style.

One of my favourite, and one of the very best, TV artists died recently. He was Tony Hart. We don't really have a good sketch artist on British TV now, so maybe they should hire you.

  • I would take the job if they offered! Thanks, Paul! Yayy!!!

    -- Matt

  • Quality work. : )

  • Thanks, Evil! Yayy!!!

    -- Matt

  • Great pick work Matt!

  • Thank you very much, Buliwif!

    -- Matt

  • Thank you! I've been waiting so long for a new hawes draws, at least it was worth the wait!

  • Thanks for waiting, and for the kind words! I will try to put up more drawing videos more frequently in the near future.

    -- Matt

  • Very old school looking Hulk, Matt.

Honestly, I nearly did a spit take when you said drawing with toothpicks. I was all like no way you're serious.

  • Yep, I was serious. LOL! Thanks for the comment!

    -- Matt

  • Amazing stuff, Matt! I can't even fathom how you can pull that sort of detail straight out of your head like that, especially given only ONE shot at it. And then topping it all off by doing it with a toothpick. Jeeeeez...

  • Thanks for the kind comment, Moosie! I appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • da best!! i wish i can draw like you

  • Moar haws draws plz!!! That Hulk came out great! :)

And I agree with the guy below - draw a TMNT if you get a chance.

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • Hey Matt,

do you think you can draw Donatello from the TMNT?

  • I will add him to a list of suggestions I have for future drawing videos. Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Matt, that was an excellent drawing. I guess I'd like to know what you thought was wonky about it because it looked super!

  • I'm not too happy with the legs and the overall anatomy, but when I draw straight from the pen (or toothpick in this case), sometimes things don't look as good as I would like.

    Thanks, Pookie!

    -- Matt

  • ur gifted..! deja vu watching this video lol

im gonna try it with a tooth pick!!!!

    awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the comment and suggestion!

    -- Matt

  • Thank you very much! I appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • if i paid u. could u make a poster sized jabba the hut?

  • Right now, with running the shop and working on the public access show and some other artwork I won't have the opportunity to do any commissions, but I may be able to do something in the future.

    Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • i love your use of feathering and hatching!btw i use brush but i think people should use whatever they feel comfortable with! spdrpig's channel talks about using the under drawing!thanks as always for posting these vids!
