This series was way ahead of its time.. i have watched the whole series and can say beyond a reasonable doubt that they touch on many truth on this series ,Steven Spielberg obviously had some inside information to make this series..
Do you see what they have done. The writer has paralleled Mary and John. The alien is represented as having human feelings when he protected Allie, whearas Mary is most un-human in her behaviour.
OK, how do you define human? Be a human is not only be kind or love, but also kill your neighbour or selfishness, The aliens are by far more advanced not only technolically but also mentally.
@Raffzeee If Mary was devoid of emotion, she would not have been 'driven' to apprehend Allie. That drive to succeed where her grandfather failed prompted her to kill her father and her lover. She's an emotionally conflicted mess. Discovering the secret behind Allie's powers is a puzzle that would give meaning to their deaths and her grandfather's work, and would solidify her purpose in the world. Without it, she's nothing but a lost and scared little girl. She's incredibly flawed, human and all.
