I think Yushin Maru turned away at the last second to make it seem (in their video evidence of the incident) that they were trying to avoid the collision by turning away, and making it look like the Bob Barker hit Yushin maru, while it was running away.

As they try to make a run for it through one of the gaps in the whaling fleets circle they get hit on the side by one of the whaling ships that was determined to stop them from escaping.

This was an overtaking situation where the Japanese vessel is the overtaking vessel and thus they are required to yield to the other vessel, which they clearly did not. Their last second turn to stbd was too little too late, at that point they were going to collide no matter what.

The whaling boat is actually bearing to starboard (turning to right and trying to avoid) just before the collision. Look at the bow of the Bob Barker relative to the boat in the distance. They are bearing starbord (turning to the right) towards the whaling boat, you can catch it just for a moment before the camera swings. Play it a few times and you'll see it.

That is what I think happened. I believe that at the last moment the Yushin Maru did take evasive action, but it ain't a jet ski...hence the glancing blow. Had the Bob Barker given way, the Japanese whalers would have just continued their whaling activities unhindered and probably would have only been made bolder by winning the game. Problem for them is, when it comes to playing chicken Sea Shepherd historically tends not to budge. :D

I do think they turn to starboard, but as was the case with the sinking of the Ady Gil, they seem to have been heading towards the Bob Barker before they took evasive action. Like Muntted commented, I think the whalers were hoping to play a game of chicken to force the SSCS vessel away from the slower Nisshin Maru--and the Bob Barker called their bluff and refused to back down.

Kind of looks like the Yushin Maru was either trying to beat the Bob Barker to the slipway or was trying to play a little chicken with them in the hopes they'd turn aside, and when they realized they were going to collide instead, tried to turn away themselves and ended up hip checking the Bob Barker.

Yeah, I agree with you on this one. Can't say for sure whether the Japanese meant to hit them. A longer video clip (probably will be available either in the future or when this reaches the Animal Planet documentary show) might clear things up a bit more. However, I do believe the Bob Barker was traveling in a straight line following the Nisshin Maru. SSCS says the Yushin Maru No. 3 dropped back after the collision, perhaps for damage assessment. The Bob Barker continued its course.
