generalamelio...about ur question....u know hte character midshipmen blakeney...in real life if he had an older brother that was destined to be lord when their father died the parents would have put their younger sons in the military so they could bring some honour and valour to the family...a lot of the sailors started out when they were about 10-12 years old...great vid love the song
Yea, you can read it in the 22 books of Patrick O´Brian. I think Master and Commander ist adapted from the book "Manöver um Feuerland" sorry, I´m from Germany - the english title ist something with "brazil".
In the book the smart midshipman Peter Miles Calamy will survive...Better as in the movie - is so sad...:-(
Good music, I know it. From which movie? "Braveheart"?
the young kids are midshipmen in the film williamson, boyle, blakeney, callamy and hollum.
midshipman were equal in rank to about a chief petty officer with only the chips warrant officers being senior to them in the non-commissioned ranks.
they were trainee officers as a simple way of putting it. they were taught navigation, seamanship, and were expected to lead gun crews in an engagement. they started young because that was the system then-the younger the wuicker they learned. thanks
wonderful film!! check out my master and commander videos!!

Have a question about the movie: why is it that there were some really young kids on the ship?
Great vid by the way
