They have been free to roam about an acre (our back yard) for a year and a half. No more cages except when we are raising babies. when the babies are big enough to defend themselves against the big hens and our cat, they are free ranged as well. We have 6 hens now.
Bonny looked guitly what crimes did she committ to deserve such a cage, you can let them out of cage for the day they will return at night and for feeding.
They've been free ranging since last October and are much happier, and less noisey. We have no rooster for mating, but the eggs are consistent and yummy.

the sounds they are making means they are ready to mate. the squatting position they made when you touched them are for mating also.
