Seen this place and this video speaks the truth, it's disgraceful what they got away with, all the locals up there know the truth and are disgusted at the lack of justice.
It is the commandment of God that we take care of His animals. Or pay the price. There is no excuse for starving or letting these cows starve..There is no justification for it whatsoever. Thank you for making this video.
The Ombudsan Report link is posted above. The report shows how long this issue was covered up and the lengths that CDU took to cover up this neglect.
I understand that as of today the person or persons that were directly to blame for this shameful issue have yet to be charged and will not until laws change. We still need a voice for these cattle.
Head up all you students and others who did what they could to save these animals your great people! Locals wont let these bastards forget what they let happen! CDU is and always will be a second rate teaching facility. It's only saving grace is it's the only university in Darwin, what a load! Read the report and get your FACTS right.!!!!!
Those cunts at Mataranka are too busy trying to scam money out of campers & the place has slipped along way in the last 5 years or more. Someone oughta head over there and sort these cunts out once and for all.
@MrDucati1198s Think your mixed up mate, This is the CDU station there talking about not Mataranka village center. But i agree.. rip off bastards looking for tourist money and too lazy to cater for them
finaly someone that know what their talking about , iv been keeping an eye on this and MsLilFlea you are completley right thankyou. iv been there myself and seen the cattle that this video is about and the dead cow could of died for anyreason you cant blame the death just on one person.. go have a look up there now when theres been rain and the grass is growing back those cattle have improved 100%...
look i have been there and still go there,. that is in the middle of the dry. part from the fact most of the cattle at mataranka and katherine are all brahman and those pics i saw of dead cows we have witnest them being attacked by dingos. so all you mob that dont even know wat its like there dont even bother saying anything ok.
This makes me SICK i was told to view this site by a realy good friend that does all this mustering stuff in the NT and she was right this is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just have to say I have been watching this story out of interest to see if anything happens from this.
And I am overwhelmed by the support this cause has raised. I pray that this same support is around for the animals. So that this sort of thing doesn't ever happen again.
It is something that should never have happend and hopefully the management problems have been rectified.
The manager was stood down while the enquiry was underway, at the same time experienced people came down from Katherine and helped the existing staff to gently move the remaining cattle to feed paddocks, ensure them water, look after the pregnant ones and generaly bring the property to order. They were given the thumbs up by the experts when the job was done. When the enquiry was over and the report was in it was reccomended that the manager be criminally charged. CDU completely ignored this and
After the two people came down to Mataranka, CDU called for a private enquiry to assess the situation at the Mataranka campus.. It took weeks to get someone to do this, no one in the cattle industry wanted anything to do with the poor state of the property. All the while cattle were still dying. Finally it was happening and we all thought that this would be an end to this appaling situation. That CDU was going to do the right thing and get rid of the manager and attend to the cattle.
Open your eyes,There is something wrong with the cattle and they are not sleeping, They can't bloody getup!
Yes some cattle on some private stations in the N.T. do lose condition during the dry season but a government funded training institution displaying lack of animal management, not best practice for stupid paying students and their stupid paying parents who fork out over $2500 to send their kids their to learn.
Theres a reason why you don't work up here anymore.
i was at the the katherine rural campus in 2009 from the months of february to november and nothing has been done to help these animals, and the people that have been trying to help the animals have been contradicted, put down and pushed out...... please we need people to help these animals!!!
Reports were also made about the the sexual harassment of two indigenous female students. Nothing was done about it. It was covered up and again people moved sideways. SHAME on you Katherine CDU !
These animals were so poor that mustering them to a healthier paddock would have ment shooting them as they dropped. The practices at the station was a disgrace. The manager is a fraud, he is indecisive and has poor people skills. I witness him on many occasions struggling to cover his arse. He is ill equipped to manage staff, train students little own feed/manage cattle.
The CDU offers training on the job at the station, displaying good management practices on a working cattle station in the N.T. How ever in 8 weeks i worked there, the amount of cattle i witnessed shot were numerous, the cattle i personally came across in the paddocks were severley malnourished and weiners held in yards for weeks, a hay shed EMPTY for over 5 days! wtf!?.
One would have thought that after the independant enquiry into the cruelty CDU would then have taken their advice and charged the person responsible, the manager, but instead they reinstated him and put a gag on all staff. As already said, forced one out and moved another. Theres lots going on here and a few backsides being covered. One wonders whos sleeping with who. What does one have to do at CDU to be sacked.
Has he been to Mataranka to speak to the REAL people?
The ones who had to deal with euthanising the cattle and dragging them away?
The ones who had to deal with all this dreadful cruelty?
The ones who were victimised when they complained?
Of the two people who actually came to Mataranka from CDU and listened and saw for themselves what was happening, one has moved to a different dept, the other has retired... Big conicidence, or big convienience?
@cruelty2 - what is your motivation here? You or someone you are close to actually lives there. What did you do about it? Did you help cattle in distress? Open gates or cut fence into paddocks with grass? Feed the weiners? Or did you just go around taking photos and whinging. Your lies and half truths speak for themself. Your real motivation is to get someone sacked that you don't like and you are pretending to care about the cattle and doing nothing to help them. You are just as responsible
Just so you know, that cutting fencing and such is illegal. I understand what you are saying, hence the reason people are trying to bring attention to this issue. From what I hear there have been attempts however a gag order was put into place. According to media this has been reported and still nothing. CDU have some power I presume.
I live in this country and so sad to see we do this things seems no animal no human can be safe from us both are in danger but we care about the poor drug dealer and we send police chief to safe them. sham on us
I live in this country and so sad to see we do this things seems no animal no human can be safe from us both are in danger but we care about the poor drug dealer and we send police chief to safe them. shame on us
None of the excuses given by the vice chancellor are an excuse for killing cattle. Anywhere in livestock management, much less in a university training place, this is simply unacceptable.
CDU - Cattle Deaths University - an insult to Charles Dawin's name.
The first was that a large sale of cattle prior to the dry season fell through "which meant we had more cattle on the station for the dry season than we would have liked".
The second was that there was a lack of a controlled mating program across the herd.
"We had calving out of season which put some distress on both the calves that were born and of course the cows themselves," he said.
@Fuckmedrunkokay The complaints were made for locking weiner's in the yards at "Mataranka" Station, for 4 months and fed when ever it suited the manager. If you need more info on these cattle and the condition they were in call "Aust-Asia" in Katherine.
THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH LATE CALVING!! It was bad management!
Charles Darwin University Vice-Chancellor, Barney Glover:
"A small number of cattle at Mataranka at that time in September last year during the dry season were in distress and that's something the university deeply regrets," he said.
He says the university acted immediately to fix the situation when it was informed of the problems.
I have it from a reputable source that contrary to what the vice chancellor of CDU said on the radio today, the issues with the cattle had nothing to do with a breeding program or late calving, it was to do with over a thousand head of cattle being locked in a paddock right next to the stuart Hwy with only 1 trough to drink from and no feed. Also, the people who were responsible and knew about this have not been dismissed and are still in their current positions with CDU.
To my knowledge CDU has been operating this style of animal husbandary for at least 18 months now despite staff and community members complaining about these practices.
I seen cattle like this not more than 25 meters from the highway when on holiday's in September 2009, obviously at this station. It was horrible to see.
It won't stop me from visiting Mataranka, but it has made me lose all faith in Charles Darwin University
Absolutely horrendeous!! Why has it taken so long for someone to bring this forward.
Thank you cruelty2animals2010 for speaking up for these poor animals.
and the other thing i would like to no is there a folow up i would like to see photos of those same cattle now that the wet season is here and there is an abundance of green grass.
@marty375 I understand that now there is an abundance of grass now, however there was at the stage there was available food and these cattle were still starved. Nothing was done to maintain them. If you think that it is ok to starve cattle maybe you are in the wrong industry.
id like to say that i was a student at mataranka stn a few years ago and have worked as a ringer on sourounding propertys while i have no dought there is management isues there i would like to ask were u sourced your photos of 'healthy cattle" the first 1 is of black anges on a hill side. my point is u dont get them in the nt...
@marty375 Why worry about the examples of healthy cows? I want to know if these animals are starving whilst looking at available food in the back ground . Is that brown stuff not edible? why don't they just open the gate and move them over to the next paddock.
Mataranka must stink with all that rotting cow flesh laying around. It's off my tourist destination that is for sure!
unfortunately the point of the video is that there was plenty of food around for these animals to eat.. they died due to poor management, ie: not giving them access to food. The people who spoke out and tried to save these animals have now been forced to leave the station.

He blames the problem on two issues.
