Looks like subscibers went down on his website - to 2800. I guess that's the risk you run where people stop subscribing once it's over. But it's still higher than the value was before - so I am still pretty happy with this advice.

Definitely. Thinking about it, combining it witha survey might also be very powerful if you're not sure as to what would be a good incentive. (Like: "Hey, I want to start a contest and I'm gonna give away some really cool prizes to you - but instead of picking for you, tell me what kind of prices would really excite you and get you going? A certain product / service? I bought product x three 2 months ago and it's blew my mind. Would that interest you?"). + it's a great way to start some JVs too.

Yes, contests get people to take action and they can create a huge buzz. I remember a 1-800 flowers contest that they started with very little budget and they got millions of dollars worth of nationwide free media coverage on that.
