I think for people who lived in the Delta back then this was their standard tuning, remember back then information wasnt as accesible as nowadays so music evolved differently.
partly to make it easier, but mostly it is for the sound. You just cant sound like this in standard tuning. It also allows you to use the slide more effectively.
Does anyone know the history behind the open d tuning? Why were bluesmen back then using this instead of standard tuning? Just to make things easier, or what? How'd it start?

Actually, I think he's tuned to a C with a capo on 2 making it a D because,......he's playing in D as we jaw about this,.....hahahaha.
