I have a Prophet 600 that I bought in a pawn shop for $60 in 1993. It has AMAZING sound that surprises most people when they hear it live. I cherish it and have used it on many records. Great, underrated synth!!!
I also believe that is the the first synth ever that included a MIDI port (with the Roland Jupiter-6 right behind) ......
Cool! You must have the drum Machine Mod! :p. Yeah, still have My Six Trak! NEVER letting her go! I've got a 600 but she needs serious work! Had to use some of the Curtis chips out of her to get my OB-8 working! :( the Prophet didn't mind since its for a good cause! :)
hello ! I own a prophet 600 , have read the manual but still haven't understood how to dump the factory sounds , and make my own sounds " from scratch " .
i am new to synths , and i would like you to giv rme more information about Midi OX , where to get it from and how it works .
So far , i have been told to just switch off the " preset " button , and twist the knobs : i actually got a horrible , punchy brass-like sound , imposible to change .... i dont think i am doing well . any further advice is more then welcome : cheers mate
@alanwilder81 How long have you owned your keyboard? Do you know if anyone else has one for sale or where to purchase one? What year was the keyboard created, & would you sell yours? Also, other vintange synths, what are the same of some of them? I have a moog rogue. It's not for sale, but I'd like to get others. Thanks.
great sound. filter is agressive in a very different way than classic P1/P5 filter.
however, the slow software envelopes lagging behind the beat are painfully obvious. to an extent this can be remedied with track offset in daw/seq, but still not the same.. pity.. i really like the sound.
still it would work fost most things very uber snappy attack isnt needed .. i.e. pads leads, fx... just not arpeggio and sequenced bass lines.
The 600 is the best synth Sequential ever made imho and Sequential made many brilliant synths. just listen to it. there is not one place where the synth sounds anything but totally credible. plus, you can leave it in any state and it it still makes a track interesting. an unbeatable synth. It even beats an OB8.
why cant synths be simple anymore? like these =[ so much real time control with the knobs, and such authentic powerful sounds. The more futuristic music gets, the more it forgets it's roots.
I've owned TWO Pro-One's. I SO much miss all the knobs that I loved to manipulate. Modern DJ's have got a HELL of long way to go before they can catch up with synth players. After all, they wouldn't be in business if it wasn't for people like SYNTHETAMINE so they can play with it.
I had one of these years ago, but could never get 2 of the oscillators to tune properly - even after replacing VCO chips (you know, the ones that cost a fortune these days). Finally traded it off for a CZ1, which had velocity, after-touch, and oscillators that stayed in tune. Still miss it though...
Great demo!!! Sold my P600 when I got a P5. Regret letting it go, filters open the sound is very similar. That P600 filter though...it's so unique, dark and aggressive. Synthesizers are kinda like girls, they each have unique features that you miss once they're gone.
@endlesspresident That's why you don't let them go. You keep them close and get new models. And don't let old models find out because they get jelous.
@TheDLovas If you're trying to decide between those two, I honestly would go for a Dave Smith Prophet 08 which is more similar to a Prophet 600 in terms of sound (in my opinion anyway). The Prophet 08 can also give you those nice Prophet strings and that wild Talking Heads Brass type stuff. But if you really want to go old school I would go with the P5 over the 600. It's just a more classic and better sounding synth all around.
fantastic demo. yeah 3372 in P600 sounds unlike anywhere else. Xpander has the same filter chip, and uses all its possible modes , however, it cannot get anywhere near this kind of bite and agressiveness. just not voiced that way.
im always toying with the idea, if its possible to mod the 3372 in P600 to do 12dB operation. and have that on a switch... that be something. that would make it a mini OBXA.. its close to its sound as it is.
Wow, typing "&fmt=18" was so much more fun and engaging than just clicking "HD", you know? Like just clicking HD is such a lazy way to obtain the exact same result!
Buy a Nintendo DS and get Korg's DS-10.....it's a music writing software that has pretty much a Korg MS-10 fully emulated....uh other then that I think you'd need to go a little higher if you want a synth....uh I hear great things about the Korg microsynth, it's not analog, but it's pretty damn cool, I just don't like the keys on it.
yea i recently changed my price range because i can not only cover it with birthday money but wtih work money so now im in the market for anything from 1000 dollars to a lil over =] i want a good one!
Damn, that will definitely get you you something nice, I must say the DS-10 isn't perfect, but it's a damn ncie toy/software, so you should look into it. Uh my first and only synth so far is a Moog Little Phatty that I got off eBay for under 1k and you can find them on it for around 700-900 depending on what model you want. Uh might not be for you, but it's a nice mix between classic analog sounds with a modern digital interface, but it is monophonic. Anyhow, good luck looking.
Yeh, I had to find that out for myself. It attempts to mimic a modular synth. Still, Not bad for the money. Let me know if you wana buy me a Synthe 100 or a Yamaha CS-80 for REAL modular power!
At that price range, a MIDI controller and some software synths might be your best bet- although you can get older digital synths like the Yamaha DX7 for that price. Don't buy the DS-10 like that guy said, it's rather hard to use.
Many years ago I went to a studioto record a demo and the bassist called in sick. After failing to get a semi-respectable bass sound on the beloved Polysix, the engineer suggested the Prophet 600. Needless to say, the bass came out pretty good on the demo. People came up to me and asked if someone played a 5-string bass on it. I just said that I played the bass.
THIS IS A GREAT DEMO, but the p600 is an absolute nightmare to use in a set up over midi. Theyre also howlingly bad for reliability. If you have a good one, then youre very lucky.

@Synthesized13 modern synths are as simple as you want, i.e. just cause the features are there doesnt mean you have to use them
that and you think modern synths are complex look back to the first modulars and pretty much anything pre mini moog

hey great as usual sound, think I am missing something again with these analoque synths.
so if you hook up a drum machine it triggers the synth to get these great rifts.
can you reply and confirm.
thanks

thanks colin
the drummachine is triggered (w. Midi Clock) the MFB Step64 step sequencer and the step sequencer is sequenced (Midi) the Prophet-600
