Consider this: In 1972 Fischer was rated 2785 while the 2nd highest (Spassky) was 2660. Karpov was back at 2630. In 1975 Karpov made up ground, but was still "only" 2700. In other words, Fischer had 0 reason to fear Karpov after he won the WC in 1972, and wouldn't either in 1975 if he hadn't gone delusional.
