Brand new Western star, sounds like a factory defect in either assembly, or a bad bearing out of the box. That's a shame. Good to hear nobody got hurt, and it was a fleet truck. Ruttley's insurancewill cover it and the load, what they don't cover the company can write off it's taxes (well, that's how it works here in the US anyway).
I heard later it was a couple of years old but this was it's first run to the west. Wheel bearing problem, I check my wheel bearings every day with a infra-red temp. reader but you couldn't expect a company driver to do that.
So we've got no water, no fire truck, two extinguishers left for a dire emergency, the red dirt at the side of the road is like rock. The remanants of the fire had been burning for 30 hours, it was blocking the main east-west trans-continental highway (about 6 vehicles an hour!), they wanted to get the truck off the highway to a parking bay.....we did the best we could under the circumstances.
hey chris, another excellent vid just like everything you post.
do you have a dolly pull setup on the front of your truck? just wondering as it sure would have been easier than going a few k's down the road looking in your mirrors.
thought you would have, pretty awesome setup you have. and at least you didnt end up using your mirrors for the move. did you tow him because he was having trouble steering with so much weight on the back of his? looked like he was having a hard time keeping her nose down.
That reminds me of an English truck driver I was talking to who was over here on a holiday. He said they never see American trucks in England and he always thought they were crap, but when he came to Australia and saw them working in real life, he said he changed his mind real quick !
Nice Vid, I heard that the fire was caused by a warranty item, something to do with the insulation on the exhaust, yep and not many blokes check their hubs.
The insurance and recovery guy said wheel bearing, but you never know until they do an enquiry. All sorts of rumors fly around when these things happen, as we all know.
was watching this vid over notice the wheels on your trk are datons those must be a pain to balance we have a few like that put,em on set the coffe can next to it start to spin balance them not a huge fan of that system have a good one
They were going to chain up the drawbar and tow everything to Nullarbor road house, but that wasn't going to work with the fire etc, so we left the KW attached to save stuffing around. In the end I towed him to a parking bay.
that must be the worst mightmare for a driver to see your truck go up in flames completely. but good money for you Chris. and that shot of the dingo on the end, great vid... thanks
I check the wheel bearings every day with an infra-red temperature reader but about 20 years ago I had one catch fire, but luckily I put it out and only wrecked the bearing.
I did rip off a mudflap but no other damage done. There was no danger. I came on the scene must have been 30 hours later. Earned $500 for a couple of hours work and I was just passing through. It saved them a lot of hassle by using my dolly.
how many tires you have to replace?that slag falling off the trl looks hot enough to ruin a set your a good man i wouldnt got our trk anywhere near it for life and limb sure nuttin elese though another great vid
My dads been lucky, I cant remember what happened but my dads back trailer flipped on its side and caught fire and went ka-bang his dolly and back trailer went bye bye and yeah... my dad basically drove off as a semi :P
Now that's a top video Chris, very interesting mate thanks...When you were showing the motor i was waiting to hear that guy from mythbusters say "well that's your problem right there" ...LOL..
I couldn't even tell what sort of engine it used to be, I'm only guessing it's a CAT. Take more than a bearing roll and a new turbo to fix it I'm guessing.
The rangers don't like you to feed them but a lot of people don't take any notice. I once saw a dingo pinch a guy's hamburger at the Nullarbor road house, unwrap it and eat it just out of reach of him.
Yoooou this trucks in fire!

this is amazing. I've just been going through all my wheel bearings 'just in case' and now I see this!
castirondude 1 year ago
@castirondude Yeah, lucky that wasn't my truck, I jack up the axles and check them before every trip.
gm16v149 1 year ago
@gm16v149 Do you check every axle or just the front?
You just check for looseness in the bearing?
castirondude 1 year ago
@castirondude I check all the bearings, all 22 of them. Jack up the axles, spin the wheels and check for play, everytime I get home from a long trip.

@khalid6591 Most of is national park or pastoral lease, so no, you cannot own land on the Nullarbor Plain.

why is it still being worked on/towed/hooked up etc. when it is still on fire?
alphafirefighter 2 years ago
Check out "more info"!
Basically, there is no water out there & no fire trucks. Middle of nowhere.
gm16v149 2 years ago
@gm16v149 there is more than one way to put out the fire........water and firetrucks are not the only way
