I don't think it is fair to "lose respect" for Ron Howard or Andy Griffith just because they supported Obama. This is exactly why I hate politics and don't really care for it; it's easy to lose sight of a person just because of the way they vote or what not. Politics is one-dimensional. A person's political ideologies is right up there with their religious views. So I do believe it is at least a good starting point of the assessment of a person.
