The move I remember best, though, isn't in this clip. That, of course, is The Doctor (as channeled by Pertwe) putting his hand on someone (the hand was somehow always conveniently not in the shot) and having them stop moving. This was some kind of Venusian Karate technique, Pertwe explained, and, he said, if he left his hand there long enough, the hapless victim would be permanently paralyzed. Wish I could find that.
@LORDUnLuCkY13 That's the whole Nu shite all over though. It just pulls out anything from anywhere, to fit in with the story, & then we never see it again. Oh Tennant's good with a Sword.. Well, actually, he's clearly not. He's good at Crying, that's about it. But they just wanted to make the end "EPIC" (This word everyone's obsessed with) & so just made it up as they went along.
Pertwee had élan & power. All the new Drs do is overact & use the Sonic plot solving device.
I'm just watching The Green Death for the first time, and he's taken out three guards with his Venusian aikido! "I do hope I haven't hurt you". He's James Bond, fantastic.
His swordfight with Rodger Degaldo was EPIC in every sense of the word. Pertwee was, is and forever will be the best Doctor. Even Tom baker couldn't better him
yeh that makes sense. aikido and karate are based in the japanese area anyways well okinawa/japan close enuf. so there would be a few similarities even if one of a striking art and one is throws. but yeh makes sense to call it karate due to the time period it was released
just to be annoying. i think he does venusian aikido. not karate. i could be wrong. as a martial artist there are parts of the style that look like karate but according to some thing i read its aikido. lol i could be very wrong.
All the same, the reason Pertwee was my favorite of the Doctors was, in a large part, the fact that he incorporated martial arts into his adventures. With every other Doctor, at the first sight of danger, they just run away. Not #3...
i agree. ive only been into the doctor for a lil while so ive not had much chance to see the older episodes but still. i do like the idea of this. however i tend to be able to pick apart screen fighting as unrealistic such as the sycorax sword fight. ah well. maybe a new doctor will come after tennant regenerates who will go back to fighting. altho i do like tennant
I am kind of getting tired of Tennant's bluster and people backing down from him when he says "YOU WILL NOT..." and then some reference is made to how awesome the Dr. is.
Yeah, and Tennant will look so intimidating with that strange teeth-grimace thing he does. I don't mind him as Doctor, but he's definitely not my favorite.
@fjccommish That always annoyed me too, but I think Matt Smith does something similar but in a more convincing manner. In his first episode he just lets the Atraxi scan him and look at all the evil aliens he's defeated, and they run off. No foaming at the mouth, no shouting, just saying "Basically, run" as cool as you please and there you go. THAT'S how you do it!
What a hoot - I dearly loved the one where he hits the guy and then cooly takes a drink of his 'fine vintage', so glad you had that one in here. I think his competence in action was one of the best things about Three, he didn't run and hide or just bluster like Two had.
LOL! Love it!!! And what story is the scene next to the last from? (The Doctor fighting some demon/alien in a back void) I had that stuck in my mind for the longest time and thought I had hallucinated it - so very glad to see it in your video!!!! Now if I could just figure out which episode it's from, I could maybe put it out of my mind! :-) Hate when things get stuck - esp. pointless ones! :-)
I am pretty sure that Jon Pertwee was an expert in Venusian Jujitsu. Anyway great video, i think the Doctor trained at the David Carradine/Man From Uncle acadamy of martial arts.
BRING THIS BACK, I say! Must the new Doctors be so absolutely physically ineffectual? It's a shame.

Tennant showed some aptitude for sword fighting in his first appearance though.
We understand that the Doctor's primary weapon is his intelligence, but a bit of kickassery here and there doesn't hurt :D

Let's hope the 12th Doctor knows Venusian Karate... or at least some Martian Aikido.

the new series needs another doctor like this one someone who is older and more physical who isnt afraid to use violence when its necessary.
doctorw2 5 months ago
watch at 0.09. having just karate chopped that bloke, Pertwee just continues to drink his water, like the dude he is.
Out of all the doctor's, you know that John's could handle himself in a fight.
Can't wait for the DVD to come out in july 2011.
Can't someone do a crash course in doctor who, or do you think it would be hours long, to get someone up to speed to the present series.
It's always nice to meet new fans. hell it nice to make new fans!

I LOVED the Jon Pertwee era of "Doctor Who". He played The Doctor as such as badass! Truly there's never been another one like him.

I would love to see Matt's doctor throw a chop at an aggressor!

@BenK8319 - right on!

@BenK8319 well probably not at his venusian akido, but tom baker does certainly outclass pertwee in terms of charm, teeth, scarfs and jelly babies :p

Better than most Star Trek fighting, even today.

If only there were a clip of Pertwee beating up David Tennant, this would be perfect
csrjjsmp 3 years ago 9
LOL! Wouldn't that be the same as the Doctor beating up a future version of himself?
(it's hard to think of David Tennant as a future version of Jon Pertwee...)
reformedfruit 3 years ago 2
It's not the same, because they dont have to be playing the Doctor when they do it, I just want to see the actors themselves fight.

@reformedfruit Maybe he's has some self-hate issues?

It's from a Mortal Kombat CD. I just tried to find some generic fight music and dubbed it over some of my favorite Pertwee fight sequences.
