Retreat when the conditions are not favorable and where you can fight another day and win. Defeat generally shatters armies or doesn't help them.
And civilians in WW2. It is war. We hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the greater evil is to invade and have the Japs fight us at every inch, killing millions of their own people and 100's of k of ours. Cities were bombed to the ground in Europe conventionally and was accepted, and civilians were the harshest message to get a surrender.

BTW, America dropped the two atomic bombs to save lives. Had a conventional invasion been launched, the casualties would have been in the millions for the Japanese and 250,000 for US soldiers. Instead it was 200,000 total. A decision of what a lesser evil is. Something you have no concept of. America has never backed from a fight.

If Napoleon lost in Russia, then it means that noone could beat Russia at this time. The cold and the gigantism of the land killed the frenchs. Hitler made the same mistake in Russia.

I actually agree about Russia, but you asked about retreats from the French and I provided a rather noteworthy one. Russia is a bastard to invade in winter.
And in regards to it being a fable..are you dense? The Japanese were fanatically devoted to their Emperor in WW2. They were willing to do kamikaze runs. They would defend their homeland to the death.

Retreat when the conditions are not favorable and where you can fight another day and win. Defeat generally shatters armies or doesn't help them.
And civilians in WW2. It is war. We hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the greater evil is to invade and have the Japs fight us at every inch, killing millions of their own people and 100's of k of ours. Cities were bombed to the ground in Europe conventionally and was accepted, and civilians were the harshest message to get a surrender.

Japan didn't want to invade US (and couldn't do it) or to expand more his territory at the end of the war. Japan was no longer a threat but wanted peace. If Japan commited reprehensible acts of war and attacked independance of other countries, I think that the punishment of the US was maybe worst and militarily inappropriate.

@Pompokoien - I heard somewhere that when the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, one of the Japanese generals had the Imperial Palace cordoned off, and all communications cut - so that the Emperor would not hear about it and do a fool thing like surrender. The alternative was for the allies to invade Japan, with the loss of thousands more people from both sides.
The firebombing of Tokyo actually killed more people than the nukes.

That is not counting the deaths of infants whos parents had radiation exposure , deaths from complications due to radiation and injuries and flat out radiation poisoning deaths. It is estimated another 20 thousand atleast.
