To me, the music of this lyric cant be anything else but what has been conceived by the genius of Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Nor does it create the same effect when someone else sings it. It is as if the poetry, the music and the voice are the attributes a monolithic, naturally evolved entity. As some one said before, please dont delete it ever. Just think about the feelings of some one who discovers and understands this gem for the first time. Thanks for posting it.

Well, there's no reason to doubt what Pank2001 says about the "correct" context for the words as Grace intended them.

And to "lose" one's mother to a strange man can be traumatic enough -- and is imbued with its own distinct pathos.

Yet I prefer to continue to (mis)interpret the song as a requiem for a mother lost to the arms of death than to the arms of another man.

I never knew that there was any doubt about the context of this poem. Surprised to see that there are many who still want to believe in "Loss of Mother" theory. Maybe they are incapable to handle the truth/reality.

This explanation was given by Hridaynath when he visited Cleveland sometime in 1996. I was there.

Very emotional song, the meaning,vocals,music and expressions are all very good !! noticed that Pt. Hridaynath gets bit emotional himself while singing 'ti aai hoti ..', but laughs away to hide his tears .. I had once seen him in Sarja Hotel in Pune (which is owned by Lata Mangeshkar) .. a very simple man but what a great artist !! i am hooked on this song for last few weeks and cant stop coming back here again and again.
