The Australian outback is an awesome thing to experience, and the Diamantina River system is a particularly good example of it's kind. It's not for the faint-hearted.
If the Australian outback can't kill you, then just about nothing could.
back in the eighties, we could easily picture the imagery depicted in this tale as we worked away on fixin fences in a more modern era, among the Kennedy ranges far east of of Carnarvon, we had the red and dusty vista, snowy river gum trunks an ackingly dry gascoygne and lyons river junction to make the connect. There is a spirit that whistles to men out there that can conjure up the most astounding relevatlions
Redgum ... i cant say nothing else.. im 29 now.. and believe it or not i seen Redgum in 1984 as a 3yr old.. i can still to this day record almost every part of the day.. my oldman is totally amazed..
Great to hear this version again - 'Caught In the Act' went missing from the LP collection years ago. Bought a Best of Redgum CD a few years ago which is generally great but the Diamantina Drover track is an awful, over-produced 80s-style version that I find almost impossible to listen to.
I was raised to this music, thanks Dad for my political analysis and my current position. My dad died early, but I was taught about political ideology and human rights. I've not had an easy life, fought for everything since the day he died, drugs., prostitution, etc. Now I teach human rights and social justice, doing my doctorate, thanks dad, thanks Redgum!! I teach 1st yr students now, they listen to Redgum, just so they know the new right ideology is the end iThanks Redgum!
This is from their famous live album "Caught In The Act". What an awesome song / performance this one is !! Every now & again, a one-in-a-million performance comes along in Australian popular music history .. which goes down as a truly hallmark timeless memory. This is such a song / performance. So well done .. so skilful, talented .. & poignant. I play this one often .. & when I do so, I can't resist singing along with the chorus part .. at the top of my lungs .. "for the rain never falls .."
There is nothing quite like classic Australian music, I enjoy everything from John Williamson, Midnight Oil and Russell Morris, Brian Cadd, Slim Dusty and many, many more
This reminds me of my grandfather who was a cocky for 60 years and was a drover up in Queensland during the depression. Brings tears to my eyes no matter how many times I hear it and I've got the album.
I would disagree that Redgum and Midnight Oil were any kind of rivals, let alone politically, both being on the left and very much at the forefront of political and protest music in the 80's. I was in my 20's in the 80's mate and saw both these bands endlessly. Both are great Australian bands - I remember seeing Peter Garrett at a Redgum gig at the Three Weeds in Rozelle in '83 (or was it '82?) when Redgum were recording their live album "Caught in the Act" - nuff said.
as an american teen i gotta say this is intense. the tone and harmonies and that solo, man this was just out right amazing you aussies got this shit on lock my friends
i once boasted to my father how proudly australian i am so i bought him a cd midnight oil 2000 watt rsl im 27 know and in his defence he gave me 2 cds caught in the act and against the grain his message was simple midnight oil and redgum in there day were rivals (politically and musically) but both bands had good lyrics and good music me not ever hearing of redgum i listened to there tunes and i learnt a very valuable lesson dont try to pull the wool over your folks eyes, redgum1 midnight oil 0
@kaylamilo Oh crap. Your Dad informed you about Midnight Oil and Redgum. Yesterday I was a kid and today I'm old enough to be an adults Dad. It went by too fast but I will say that the 80s was an era when artists spoke for what they believed.
@kaylamilo The Oils and Redgum were on the same side politically... and it was more Chisel that was musically a rival for the Oils. I lost count of how many gigs and parties I went to with these three legendary bands. Your dad has great taste!
I can't put my finger on why, but I like John Williamson's versions better.

Nope, it doesn't... Most of it falls on the Barkly Tableland and some runs down the Georgina River into the Diamantina River.

Why is it that all the songs off "If you don't fight you lose" aren't up? Easily their best album...

Honest, unashamedly Australian music played by a great band who wrote wonderful songs of protest, meaning,& memories from the heart.
I have a few of their vinyl albums none better than "caught in the act".
Diamantina Drover, Only 19 and Last Frontier are stand outs.
Thanks for the posting.
