GM got $50 billion from the government in TARP funds, $6.7 of which was in the form of a loan. $13 billion of it was in the form of an escrow, which was supposed to act as working capital. The remaining billions went into stock purchases, making the government the majority owner. They used some of the escrow to pay back the loan portion.
First, it's money they would have had to pay off anyway, regardless of where they got it. It's borrowed too, so maybe you don't pay back your loans, but other do. Second, I'm sure you would be happy with 250,000 more workers unemployed, and no U.S. auto makers. You're so fiscally smart.
