I have the same year bike. Front cylinder is not firing. I checked the coil and the coil is good. Now apparently I am told this model you have to buy the stator with the coil (pulse coil) which is $650 bucks. Is there a way around this because my stator is good and I just need a damn pulse coil. Can one be spliced in?? Any info would be great. Thanks
Just to be sure, try switching the ignition coils & see if that corrects the issue. I think one lead is longer than the other, but you'll only be cranking a few secs, & you can use a pc. of 6 or 8 ga. wire to lengthen the lead if too short. Aside from that, I'm not sure how the stator affects spark, but if indeed it does, there ARE two separate pickup coils, & you could theoretically splice another in using heatshrink tubing to seal the splice. Ebay is great for parts! Keep me posted :)
@dshmechanic I switched them and had it tested at the shop the coil is good. I actually just bought a pick up coil off Ebay for 24 bucks! Going to do just as you said splice it in(2 solder joints). Suzuki will not sale the damn part separate so they force you to get the stator which fine. It just charges the battery like an alternator. If thats not it its got to be the damn CDI box which the shop wants 500 bucks for. Found one on Ebay for 250 used though. Hopefully its not the CDI.
@ElectricTN Sounds good & keep watching on eBay...my guess is you would eventually be able to find an igniter unit for a lot less than $250 if that would turn out to be the prob. By the way, have you thoroughly checked the ignition component related wiring & connections? It is VERY highly possible a bad wire/faulty connection could be causing your issue. Visually inspect, and if in any doubt check with an ohm meter....you may be pleasantly surprised. Motorcycle wiring sure takes a beating :)
@dshmechanic I ohmed it out with a meter and took it and put it on a machine, it read good. I checked the boot on the end and connections and all the splices looked good from what I could see. I may of missed something, electrical is a bitch but I am pretty sure I covered all the bases. Believe me I do NOT want to pull this thing apart for a pick up coil.. Hell I rather it be the CDI its right under the seat and easy to get to. 2 plugs. I got 1 saying CDI and 3 sayin coil, all bike mechanics
I feel your pain. What I was referring to last night had more to do with checking the wiring that feeds each separate ignition component (ie...igniter unit, coil packs, etc) I've encountered firing issues like yours that were caused by just such a simple thing...bad wire or faulty connection supplying the coil that fires the offending cyl. Granted, not always easy to find, but the joy you feel when you find it is a 5 min fix is like no other. Any way to 'borrow' a CDI just to eliminate that? LOL
@dshmechanic Hell yea lol. I just changed the oil literally the day before and I will have to scrap the old gasket off, install a new, drain oil again, all that BS is not fun. I looked at all the joints and connections to each coil and all through the wiring harness and CDI. I am going to have another go around with it before I tare it down just to make sure I didnt miss something... A lose wire or bad ground would be awesome! But im bankin on the pickup coil. I will keep you posted.
@dshmechanic P.S. the guy who have the bike before me had some jimmy rigged splices. Like 2" long bare wire with just heat shrink over them but that was just for the tail lights he had. I installed the LEDs and cut them down, wire nutted them and wrapped them with electrical tape. At the time I could not find my solder gun so, when I go back in I am going to solder and tape every spice I see. Again I used a multi meter to check power and continuity and everything checked out. I will re look tho
@dshmechanic P.S. something I did not look at now that I am thinking about it was the fuse box.... Because everything had power and I believe those firing coils share a fuse. Im gonna look at that too. At worst im only out $27 bucks which I can relist on Ebay if I dont need that part. It was the only one I found on ebay and I didnt want to let it go and get stuck having to pay for the entire package..stator and pick up for $650.. Ill keep you posted as soon as I can get to it.
where did you get the seat? iv been customizing my 1400 for about a year and i still cant find a good single rider seat...so i made one but im not too in love with it so yeah corbin gunfighter?!?! cant find it for sale anywhere...and this is the first time ive seen another seat that looks half good
@zachfarra The seat is a Corbin Gunfighter.....maybe it's been discontinued? I have seen variants of this same solo saddle through Corbin. Some had different colored stitching where the edges of the flames were. Mine is all black. Not sure where, or if they are still available. Mine came with the bike when I bought it several years ago. Good luck.
i love the bike, it has sort of a Harley look to it, at no where near the cost... and it has all the engine you could ever need. as for the guy looking at this for his first bike, go for it, but be careful, this is not a beginner bike, but if you can be mature and keep your self from pushing it you will be fine.... best of luck, just be safe out there.
i got a 1998 1400 intruder with 5 fpeed tranny and love it also have vance and hines straights on it looks almost identical to yours but a few things are different. i gonna put it on here some time. mine also has a mustang seat wich helps for the longer rides. i however don't care to much for the stock handle bars. im thinking of going to drag bars. or somthing with a little wider grip.if any ideas post it here thanks j.m
Pretty much any auto parts store sells what you need to do this. I don't remember off hand the diameter, but for some reason 1 7/8" sticks in my mind? If I remember, I bought two 18" sections, and then two turn-down sections, also 1 7/8" in diameter. Then I welded the turndowns to the straight pcs. and fabricated and welded the mounting tabs to each side so they mount firmly to the frame. Someday I'd like to get them chromed, but for now high heat silver works, LOL.
These are very reliable bikes, but not very comfortable on longer trips when compared to other bikes I've ridden. They sure look good though! This might be too much bike for a newer rider. I say "might" because there are a lot of variables here.....such as your size, and natural aptitude, etc. If you're a common sense kind of rider, I'd say go for it. At least you won't end up buying a smaller bike that you'll just end up selling a year later when you've grown out of it. Good luck.
The carbs already had a Cobra jet kit installed when I bought the bike, so I'm not sure how a straight through exhaust would perform with stock jetting. I'm guessing there would be lean running issues of some sort.

sounds crazy!

1 7/8 is the inside diameter. Two inches in the outside diameter, . They sound great. However I think they would look better painted black.
Get VHT headder paint. It is good to 2200 degrees.

Im going to buy my first bike next year and it has to be custom ofc :D
Would this one be good one for first one and is this trustable so you could ride 200-500km trips without fearing something would go wrong?

Truders Rock!!!!!!!!!

Yes they do. The only thing I don't care for on mine is the 4 speed tranny. I missed getting a 5 speed by one year....it didn't come out until 1997.
dshmechanic 3 years ago
Why do you want 5 gears? 4 is good ;] 5th is between 3 and 4, truder dont need that gear :]

@dshmechanic i got a 5 speed on a 1995.i don't know where you took your information.
