  • I'm trying to add barndoors to my scoop lights but can't seem to find tension hinges small enough.

  • mark you should add dimmer switchs on them

  • Thank you! You are incredible!

  • Tried this on a work light last night and I must that say mine doesn't look quite as good as the pair you did. My hat goes off to you, sir.

  • Thank you

  • You were right to *not* wear gloves when drilling. Getting a splinter or a cut is much better than getting your whole hand ripped off (or at least a finger). Granted, a small handheld drill is not a large drill press, but you'd be surprised how much torque even a smaller power tool can produce. The hard and fast rule in the machine shop (or wood working shop) is *no gloves*. (There are exceptions, e.g. when sheet metal is cut by any kind of scissors motion, as that produces a saw-like edge.)

  • Hi Mark I just LOVE your video's.

I was at home depot yesterday and I bought a Piano hing

I will post a video of the matte box later.

  • Hi Mark this is Kristy I'm building a matte box and I have the barn doors cut out

what kind of hinges will I need will I need to use the same hinges

you used this build it your self stuff is fun.

    thank you so much.

  • here added: even if you pick the cheap paper thin sheet metal spot weld a frame on it, we got our sheets metal our local welding shop has heavy duty cutter we gave them design pattern in 20min, we had all 4piece or 8 (whichever) cut done / on the closing factor adding spacer on upper & lower barn door might help it.

  • ur awesome mark

  • If you make these barn doors and turn your light on with the doors closed, TAKE THE GLASS OFF THE LIGHT!!! The doors trap in the heat and cause the glass to shatter, no joke. It happened to me after being on for about 15 minutes.

  • I have solved the fold-up problem. Use one pair of offset mounted hinges and the other pair non - offset. what A BRILLIANT SOLUTION!!!!!!!

  • Hi Mark. I'll have to find those hinges at my local hardware!! The heat is the reason i'm changing over to CFL worklights. More expensive to begin with but you get the added benefit that you can use them with daylight, and have natural backgrounds and windows in the scene. Now I'll have a set of CFL and a set of tungsten.

  • I laughed, I cried, I even sang, well! hummed alittle at the end..

    2 thumbs up....

  • great advice! I am actually trying to make my own lights, its working out alright :)

  • Mark, you have good information, but I think you use too many words. I believe you could fit all of this content in half of the time with some streamlining. Thanks for what you do!

  • make a tut of making of that screens for a camcorder.

  • This is a great method of turning those work lights into something with a little movie magic attached.

It turns a $25 set of work lamps into a $300 set of film lights, you would be surprised how easy they are to sell once converted.

  • your the best i was trying to think it over in what supples to get going from lights to green screens to softwere i dont remeber how to spell it haha so just thanks for making these videos they help me alot and im sure they help everyone else :)

  • Can you make a video that shows how you would use barn doors?

  • thanks for the tips really helpful, im just heading to the store to get these metireals hope i don't mess up LOL (Wish me luck) :)

  • why cant you trace the barndoors on paper, upload it as a jpeg and put it on photobucket so we can print a copy

  • For people like me its a 5 hour build, I am as slow as a snail

  • Hey MARK! This is cool... I have a suggestion for something I would love to see from you though.. I would really like to know some ways of diffusing the light from these type of lamps without softboxes. I have heard of "GELS" but dont know how to use them.. but I know they are usually about $20 for a pack of diffusion gels. Would really like to be able to do this. Thanks!

  • Awesome Mark. I've been considering trying this, and now you've spelled it out quite nicely. Saves me the trouble of inventing my own.

  • thanks man

  • This was the best video you've done - this is something we can really use.

  • Very good how to video.

  • How do you use Barndoors?

  • to direct your light

  • opps, back again, I forgot to rate..!

  • Also this video is exactly why I have so much respect for your channel.

I have seen this done before, but never explained simply and easily.

  • Mark, there is a website called instructables, these sorts of videos do very well there, lots of interest..

Its a very serious home projects place on the net.

  • thanks for the insight...lol get it..lol :)

  • sweet! can you do a tutorial how to ad barn doors to a round light? like a clip light?

  • i mean clamp light

  • I don't think you would need barn doors on a clamp light, my clamp light has a reflective housing, And I don't think it would work very well.

  • I'll look into it and see what I can do. You might be able to use some of the tech in this video and apply it ot the round clip lights

  • Thanks for the tutorial, this is just perfect for me

  • why is there a piece of blue tape on some f the screw bags?

  • no logos... you can not show a logo on a video without written permission. some companies will sue you over it. Harley Davidson is one of those that will. I was just playing it safe in this video

  • That is awesome. I need to do that. Have a great weekend my friend. God bless you and your family.

  • Excellent made My friend!

Quick note! The smoke that came off the light after you work on them is usually is hand skin "oil" that evaporates. Happens a lot when you touch the glass with your bare fingers. But as said before is pretty normal.

  • the smoke is from the paint...believe me I know :)

  • Mark how did you get a 15 min video up?

    thanks DJ Mikey Mike

  • hes a youtube partner see the add? or under the subscribe button you will see the "tube" button

  • it partnership and my old directors account. i am going to put up a video on it on my QA channel soon. its one the question I get asked alot
