  • This was the first let's play i saw by you. A great one.

  • does this run on win7? I'ts the only game i haven't played in the series...

  • @wario22 The GoG version should be compatible with modern systems without needing QuickTime. Buy that one.

  • Every few years I get the urge to play these games again. I'd get partways into Riven and just get fed up with the constant disc-swapping. Thanks for this awesome playthrough!

  • Is it bad that I miss Cyans title screen? lol

  • 1:25 so, he'll need your help "a-Ghen"?

  • Watching this again because i am stuck again on this game

  • 'there's a surprise, atrus must write something' < god that made me laugh

  • Also, Atrus's dad's (Gehn's) mother, Ti'Ana, was the one who destroyed D'ni. Just a random fact. I'm not sure why. Awesome narrations and I absolutely LOVE your accent!!!

  • Ah, this take me back. Riven was and is one of the most beautiful and imaginative games ever made. It's a shame games today can't be more like these. Good times...

  • "Okay, we've seemed to arrive at Riven and... oh. We're trapped. Well, short game; we already lost. Well, I hoped you enjoy this Let's Play and maybe you'll watch some of my other videos."

Hahaha. I love your dry wit.

  • omg omg omg I LOVE this game. :O

  • it would have been awesome if the annotation/link from the ending of your LP of myst that linked to this video would have started right when you teleport into the cage in Riven so it doesn't show the intro again...since if we have watched the Myst LP i'm sure we've seen your awesome Riven LP already, just would be a nice touch to add =D

  • LOL at you saying "Keep it secret, keep it safe." I presume you're a LOTR fan as well? :)

  • "Well, short game...." lol

  • 3 people were shot with poison darts.

  • "with what?" lol

  • You are not funny at all..

  • Leagueoflegends?

  • your voice is so soothing ^_^

  • There's something I've always wondered do the d'ni create an age or do the just make a link to one when they write the linking book?

  • @banapplepielord read the books

  • Riven won't show up with FRAPS! How did you record it?

  • so many memories with my sister nostalgia

  • dude your Dutch accent is awesome! it sounds kinda like a cross between American and English, with a hint of awesome added XD

  • Shucks, I'm reacting to certain things in this video in a bad way. I was supposed to feel concerned, not feel a sense of humor and laugh. :(

  • CHO !

  • "well short game weve already lost"

i was dying that was to funny

  • I just got this for the Playstation and it's pretty awesome

  • How do you record these videos?

  • 7:12 yummy graphics...

  • I miss this era of video games, the graphics may be better now, but that's about it.

  • @htomsirveaux42

I wish I could thumbs up a comment more then once,

  • It sounds like the guard is speaking Japanese, but that's just me.

  • I like how you link right onto Martin Luther King Boulevard. This game is a little scary that way. Then again, most of the bad endings are just trapbook fails. But yeah, you can get yourself killed if you know how.

  • OH MY GOD YOU HAVE THE BEST VOICE EVER FOR THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

  • haha "oh we've been trapped" just awesome

  • The PS1 port of this game was published by either Acclaim or Sunsoft... or both

  • I love watching lets plays with people who have accents (I'm pretty sure you have one or else its my ears hearing things). I also watch LythaJuliania's lets plays, her page is awesome everyone should check it out ^_^

  • I'm being totally honest here now: I started playing Myst last week, and finished it two days later.

I started playing Riven on Monday this week, and finished it earlier today, without using hints or guides. Those statements aren't meant as for bragging (ok, maybe just a little but), but a testament to how extremely immersive those games are! I was totally hooked, clocked around at least 5 hours a day in these worlds magical worlds! Truly spectacular games!

  • Sucks that Jack Wall isn't doing ME3! Check out my keyboard rendition of Yeesha's Joyride from Myst IV!

  • "Sorry I don't speak rivanese" XD

  • In my opinion the series of Myst games started losing their "Myst" feel after Myst III: Exile. It just didn't seem the same in Myst IV, and Myst V was a big waste.

  • ...Why is there a giant d'ni 5 in the title screen?

  • @TheScurvyNinja Because Riven is Gehn's Fifth Age.

  • @Dilandau3000 And pretty much everything in Riven has to with the number five, from the number of discs to the name riVen.

  • @Dilandau3000 The V of Riven is a 5, too!

  • @Dilandau3000 Is that a Russian accent? Whether it is or not, I love it!

  • @Mrgahoolefan No, I'm Dutch.

  • Is Myst IV harder than Myst III?

  • I know it's pointless to complain about it now, but I really wish he didn't talk over the cut-scenes.

  • Gehn disliked this?

  • I love myst i might get this too =D

  • in the past ive got this game for the pc and ps1 and in both versions the game will constantly freeze. i eventually just gave up on it so now im here just watching a lets play of it. btw your commentary is hilarious.

  • You know, Rivenese sounds a lot like Japanese or Chinese here

  • Installed this game just today. Stunning. This game was made when I was born and I apreciate the effort put into this game and myst because they only had 7 creators. But I thought myst III was also made by ubisoft.

  • @spikew10 No, Myst 3 was made by Presto Studios.

  • @Dilandau3000 But Ubisoft did PUBLISH Myst III: Exile

  • @spikew10 Myst III: Exile was published by Ubisoft, but developed by Presto Studios... The fourth game was developed and published by Ubi.

  • @spikew10 Riven is my favorite myst game

  • BTW Congrats on your WELL OVER 9000 views on the video!

  • Lol "Atrus is being SO clear."

  • You have a very nice voice o.o

    It fits with the music.

Almost hypnotic. I actually feel myself... lulling... aslee- [passes out on keyboard]

  • @ChaoticNakka That's not really the effect I was going for. ;)

  • @Dilandau3000 you do sound like a hypnotist at the start ^.^

  • @ChaoticNakka And the accent. The lovely, lovely accent. <3 lol

  • Your in-game commentary makes these videos a little more amusing. Don't give me wrong, it's actually fun to listen to it.

  • I remember how immense this game seemed when I was young and watching my brother play it. This Let's Play brings back wonderful memories.

  • @BunnyMustache Yeah, that's for sure. Shame a lot of computers nowadays won't take it because of operating system problems or otherwise. I think it's kinda funny I still remember the code to the star fissure from ten plus years ago, but can't remember squat for my college finals.

  • I like Riven because it is the only Myst game that you don't go to lots of ages to get things. Myst: you get red and blue pages. Myst III: you collect symbols. And so on. Riven is the best! (i think)

  • Still thinking about doing the original version of Myst? Hope to hear from you! :)

  • Oh, this was my first Myst game that I bought and remains my favourite out of all of them.

  • im thinking of getting this game, ive seen it for cheap. is it good? i haven't played any of the other Myst games.

  • @pspfan2468 It's my favourite Myst game, just be aware that it's very, very difficult (easily the hardest puzzle game I have ever played). So patience, a logical mind, and strong attention to detail are required. Or alternatively, a walkthrough. :P

  • @Dilandau3000 ya, when i was looking at it on a different web site they gave it 5/5 stars on difficulty and thank you for your input i will see about getting it.

  • @pspfan2468 I just bought a strategy guide with it.

  • your gunna read his diary!

  • the thing in the first screen in riven looks like the space ship used in men in black 2

  • have you made any videos on the original myst game?

  • If you like this checkout shadyparadox, he does LP on myst games too.

  • I installed the cd version of riven lately on my 64 bit computer with Windows 7. Game works fine, but cutscenes, animations do not play at all. Wtf mate?

  • @AdamAus85 Riven depends on an old version of Quicktime that quite likely won't work on 64 bit Windows.

  • @Dilandau3000 What I don't understand, is why can't newer versions of Quicktime play these older Quicktime animations and videos?

  • @iNEXSERTiON They can play them (I think), if you open them manually in the Quicktime player it should work fine. It's just that Riven cannot use the newer version of Quicktime in the game.

  • @Dilandau3000 Ah, well that makes sense. Do you know if this game runs on Mac OS X 10.6.4? I heard it could and if you install the older version of QT, it will run perfectly. I think it was something like Riven X?

  • @iNEXSERTiON I don't think the older Myst games run on Intel Macs at all. But I never had a Mac myself so I'm not sure.

  • @Dilandau3000 damn. oh well, guess i'll have to just stick with watching. OR download the PS1 roms of it, since that would be the only way i could play... -.-

  • Comment removed

  • @Dilandau3000 hey Sven, what is your favorite myst game out of all the ones released by Cyan worlds?

  • @iNEXSERTiON Google RivenX.

  • @ironmagma Already had it downloaded. Just gotta go out and buy Riven.....or torrent it. Or maybe I'll just wait for the iPod/iPhone release.

  • I LOVE how you do Let's Plays and coming from me, that's really saying something. Your voice just works for them and you explain things so well. I wanted to ask you in your PQ3 LP (but youtube was being evil) where are you originally from?

  • I'm a little confused about the plot as I havent played the games in such a long time, Wasn't D'ni an actual ancient age that was destroyed? I thought the caverns in new mexico were where Atrus lived as a child not where D'ni was.

  • @aaronalexdem I'm sure that D'ni was a place not only a race of people

  • @aaronalexdem Atrus lived in a cleft in the desert in New Mexico, which was close to the entrance into the D'ni caverns. The D'ni originally came from an Age called Garternay which was destroyed, before they settled in the caverns on Earth 10,000 years ago.

  • You mention Myst 1 to 5 but not Uru?

  • just so you know, I loooove this game so much.. and your commentary is great XD

  • Its weird, but I continually forget that I almost worked on this game. I had an interview with Broderbund. They needed someone to do Photoshop touchup work on some final screen shots just before release. I can't remember what happened with the project or why Broderbund was touching up Cyan's work, though I do know that it was all hush hush at the time, and that I would not have been able to discuss my work should they have brought me on. I doubt it matters now.

  • Brøderbund was the initial publisher, but I was and am unclear on why they were going to do screen touchups...

  • "keep it secret, keep it safe!" lol

  • Your RiVen walkthroughs are remarkable! They are extremely informative and humorous. . I played this game years ago, and got about halfway through, until I peaked at a walkthrough at the bookstore for a little hint, to get me going again. As I played I kept thinking I was making the game to complicated, if I only knew.

  • whistle nose is so annoying

  • As a child I've always tought that the book killed that guy (thats what I was told actually) and I never noticed the "dart" sound.

  • Exile is the best Mystgame i.m.o. (when playing myself)

Uru and Myst V are the best Mystgames to watch a LP from.

  • exile is my favorite though.

  • "Oh yeah, you take the book! Its not as if I NEED that thing."

Awesome I love your commentary Dilandau xD

  • It feels strange, watching how good you are at LPing now, then coming here and seeing you call them "thingies" in the description.

  • i played this game with my sister when i was 3. it was fun until that amphibian thingy came along that thing was so scary back then

  • Simply excellent. Thanks for this. It explained many details that I didn't catch when I played it years back. Also inspired me to play through it again.

  • Something I just noticed. The middle letter of Riven, the one you zoom throungh at 4:36, is V, which is Roman for 5 and Riven is Gehn's 5th age. 0_o

  • @PrinceChedar wow your right i always thought that V looked a little conspicuous ;) Also Riven has 5 letters so theres some more of the 5 symbolism right there lol

  • OMG!!! i just found this, i ermmebr watching my dad play riven when i was a kid, i just remebered it, and was googleing my ass off about it! cant wait to watch these

  • I'm gonna love watching this LP! :D

  • At 6:09:

"That's what you get for messing with ME!"

    Hilarious! :D

  • If the game ended at 6:30...that would have been EPIC

  • i acutally got my copy to work on vista 64 bit

  • very well done, thx man!

  • very informative and interesting I love all of the myst games. Played 1 2 and 3 not 4 or 5 yet

  • i love the false surprise. "oh no, i've been trapped."

  • you playing on vista?

  • I was playing using a Virtual Machine with Windows 98 because I couldn't get it to work properly otherwise.

  • Virtual machine?

  • Google for "Virtual PC" (note that while the latest version of Virtual PC is for Windows 7 only, older versions are available for other versions of Windows; also note you will need your own Windows 98 install media).

  • thanks

  • Subscribed. I've been looking for commentary Riven and Uru Let's Plays for quite some time, and here we go. Great!

  • "well Cho to you, too" LOL

  • ROFL!

"Okay he's been shot. That's what you get for messing with ME!"

I have a feeling this is going to be a funny ass letsplay with commentary like that in a Myst game!

    ^.^

  • Don't get your hopes up, I'm not that funny. :)

  • You have sophisticated humor Dilandau. I respect that. :)

  • I must say that I am enjoying both shadyparadox's and Dilandau3000's playthroughs.

  • Comment removed

  • @eruse i found this amazing series thanks to shadyparadox's videos, and dilandau's LP is excellent as well :D

  • I LOL'ed at "Oh. Well, that was short. We've already lost. I hope you ejoyed this Let's Play."

  • I remember this game, took me ages to beat.

  • Me too. I had to get help from cheats :P

  • And what program did you use to record the narration on your laptop?

  • I recorded the narration using Audacity, and combined the game video and my narration using Windows Movie Maker. It's free and it works, I didn't need any more. :)

  • Man, what lengths one has to go through to get stuff done :/

  • Great. I was just racking my brains, trying to think of a game I really wanted to see a LP of, and then RIven came to mind. I'm looking forward to this.

  • This entire let's play series is great! I have really enjoyed it so far, keep up the good work!

I've never made a let's play before but I was thinking of doing one, I was wondering what sort of applications and hardware I might need. It is a pain because I'm running on vista and can't get my mic to stream from my speakers.

    Thanks for the vids!

  • Thanks!

As for the software, it depends. I recorded this using Hypercam, but my sound card has a "Stereo Mix" option, even on Vista, which I could use to capture the sound.

If the game you wish to play is more modern you might be able to capture it using Fraps, which can stream the audio directly without needing support from your sound card.

I recorded the narration separately on my laptop, while I played and recorded the game on my desktop.

  • I can't get the DOSBox recording thing to work. I am rather technically challenged. How do you combine your narration with the game sounds to make a final product? I was using camstudio to record a LP but kind of gave up when I found I couldn't do the narration and the game sound at the same time :(

  • Oh, and if it's a really old DOS game, you can use the recording functionality of DOSBox, which I believe captures both sound and video.
