I think it's interesting that the piano player's solo itself doesn't cut through the way his accompaniment did...pretty tasteless...he's super talented, but really now...
I know the pianoman is takin a lot of heat, but seriously man... what were you thinking at 7:27, just ruin the solemn moment... I'm surprised he didn't jump back in and roar a solo over the squad from 7:46 to the end... but man he is one hell of a player though
Boris ... couldn't agree more ... here Roy is playing more cool and trying to lay back and set something up ... beautiful really ... and the pianist doesn't hear it and just plays all over it
Roy Hargrove will be a legend.Hargrove has the most talent of any trumpet player in our solar system.Everyone whos heard Roy knows that hes 1 in a googleplex.
I love Roy, but he still hasn't had that breakout record that defines him and his career. Its hard--dont get me wrong. A lot of it has to do with timing and finding the right collaborators and...who knows what all. They say Miles had no idea Kind of Blue was gonna be anything more than just another record, so that tells you right there that you can't manufacture transcendence. Roy's on right track. His accomplishments are already major.
There's a great recording him doing this song with Dave Drubeck. Man, Roy sets fire to every song he plays. Thanks for the posting such wonderful vids
I love roy's sound on more conventional horns like this bach. i heard him just recently in april on a real vintage conn he picked up somewhere (not a vintage one). he sounded beautiful on it, it was one of the sweetest live trumpet sounds i ever heard. Yeah Roy!
Roy Hargrove has one of the most beautiful sounds of today's Jazz trumpeters. He's in the same category of Claudio Roditti, Terrence Blanchard, Chet Baker or Luis "Perico" Ortíz.
I just played with him in April at a jam session at he Clark Terry Jazz Festival. He was playing on a Conn that night. He picked it up from a friend he said was a vintage trumpet collector...
piano player and roy are great..they play well off each other

i think 0:15 roy yells at the piano player to calm down, the guy is obviously way too busy.

Somebody give that piano player a B3. That stuff doesn't work on an acoustic piano.

If you would cut one of the piano player's hand, he would still be TOO BUSY.

you mean Rockelle?
msailors 1 year ago
No the way she spells her name is Raquel. She went to the Berkley school of music with him and dated him.
AGYMAH 1 year ago
This wasn't written by Roy. It was written by Rodney Whitaker (the bassist in this vid) for his daughter, Rockelle.
msailors 1 year ago
Ok well thats a great coincidence cause Roy has a sista by that same name (different spelling) that hes written for also. Thanks for tha info.

I agree that Roy is an excellent trumpet player, but to say that he is #1; I don't think so. But that is my opinion, and I respect yours.
