Folding @ Home is a project to study protein folding. when it goes wrong protein folding is implicated in many ailments like altzheimers, and many cancers. People build these uber-powerful number crunchers and donate their runtime to the F@H system that is the world most powerful computing system. Basically it's how nerds do charity :)
@DSRvmv111 It's a thing called Folding@home where powerful computers (or low computers, doesn't matter, just a bunch of guys with high hardware do it a lot), fold proteins for stanford medical research and guys like me love gaining points.

can i ask for a full part list and prices you paid for all this? i don't pay for my energy bill and have rougly a 27meg connection to utilize and all i can run right now is my 9800GT and my P4 at 3.3ghz for folding...
Im sorry but Folding@home is not about u getting MORE points its about completing workunits so the science can progress . So any equipment u have whether it be ps3 cpu or gpu is needed cause all 3 of those systems have their strengths and weakness. I personally fold on my gpu and i also use the smp client on the same box .
Keep up the good work AtlasFolder, Your family is in my Prayers.
once i move out of my house and into my aprtment, im going to build a ps3 farm of pure folding. its alot cheaper than computers. but im also gonna have some older computers too
@mauleriscool yes but you should consider Flops/watt perfromance and then you will realise that Cell broadband engine is a powerful beast, plus you can also add to that that this cpu is based on the 90nm process unlike your GPU
If I were you, I would wait 'til Sony makes the CPU and GPU into 45 nm. The PS3's are cheaper BUT they give you less points per Watt and somehow they suck.
@tronulu gpu cards have much higher throughput in terms of gigaflops because they have up to 500 cores, the power of a cpu is in its ability to run individual threads at very high speed.
Although they produce less PPD, they are actually doing more work. PPD is just something Stanford made up to give f@h users a way to compare the efficiency of hardware ON THE SAME CLIENT. Because the PS3 is running a completely different client, you cannot compare it's PPD to that of a system running GPU2. In reality, the PS3 is actually capable of doing far more work for f@h than something like a 9800gt is.
GPU gets better PPD & better PPDPW (points per day per watt) than PS3s, so yes if ya after purely points, then GPU is better.. science wise.. maybe .. coz each client does different things.. GPU less flexible but super fast - PS3 middle ground - CPU very flexible, slower though.
yeh.. oh well.. doesn't matter.. then he'll be the one who gets a GPU thats 4 times faster than the one your talking about. Ya gotta buy a system sometime.. ppl get caught out just waiting and waiting when to upgrade.. then two years later, still don't have a new computer
You got 1$ every time space core said space :)
but srsly, how much did this cost, and was it worth it?

this doesn't look like the way to handle new hardware, even if it's just PSU's.

Actually, 2 x 295's would be octa-SLI due to the bridging on the chip.
You can't SLI a video card without bridging the chips, and in any DUAL gpu video card solution this leads to double bridging.
If you know anything, you'd know that.
But you obviously don't because you are on youtube arguing about some dumb shit.
Now that I think of it, it's actually probably more in line with 112xSLI instead of Octa.
DUH
akabeats 2 years ago
@akabeats " 295's is quad SLI, not octa-SLI.
The 295 is 2GPU's in SLI. 2x2 = 4 = quad.
Just because the GPU's are bridged lanewise, doesn't mean they are running in SLI.

cool, i really appreciate you're time and work put in for Folding, and I see that you have so much video cards. Could you send me one??? :D
electrocro 2 years ago
would be interisting to know if folding at home actualy supports SLI
niceboy60 2 years ago
It doesn't, you have to disable SLi if you want to run it on dual GPUs.
arvutihull 2 years ago
no , sli dont make your video card cruch faster
hitachi088 2 years ago
You don't use SLI for folding, you use the graphics cards individually to run multiple clients.

how do you get two power supplies to turn on when the computer is turned on?
l0lum4d 2 years ago
there is a cable which converts 2 24pin connectors, into one, which then plugs into the single 24 pin slot on the motherboard.
alilcupcakethatpwnsu 2 years ago
Alternatively, you could make your own little botched setup.
Bassically, on the 24pin connector, simply have the green wire connected to any of the black wires and it will keep it running.
You could setup a little switch with a relay to switch it.

lol i heard that is has like 2 teraflops of power, but m not sure tho.
but the electricty dont matter to me tho cuz imma move with my frnd and were gonna split the bills
ki11joy92 2 years ago
Well ps3's make around 1,000-1,200 folding points a day.
A 9800gt graphics card make around 4,000-5,000 points a day.

@mauleriscool Yes well a single GTX 480 can turn out 19k Points per day. I realize your comment was old, just saying :)

45nm true.. very true.. PS3 somehow suck? untrue
Lahmy88 2 years ago
Suck for folding.
GPU's cost a lot less and do a lot more PPD.
Jammowns 2 years ago
mate.. they ohh so easy to run.. they do not suck.. and like i mention below.. different clients benefit in different ways.. so its ALL good!
Lahmy88 2 years ago
They do less PPD and less PPDPW compared to GPU's.
However, help is still nice.
Jammowns 2 years ago
I strongly agree that PPDPW is very important.. but when the PS3 is standard, you're stuck with a constant figure
Lahmy88 2 years ago
True.
But instead of buying a PS3, 3 9800 GT's and get much better PPD/PPDPW :D
Jammowns 2 years ago
