BEST DRUM TECHNIQUE VIDEO!!! I watched like 100 times and still laughing. How I wish I had a teacher like you...funny and a great drummer!! Thanks for the upload!!!!
WHOA! is an appropriate reaction to this. My mind was just blown. I can't begin to thank you. This has just opened my mind up so much regarding my fills. Thanks.
Hi. I dig your lessons. Great stuff. I drummed as a kid but gave it up. I've just recently started again as an adult, so please excuse the ignorance level of my questions. When playing the double bass pedal, are your hi-hats open? It seems logistically impossible for you to keep them closed, but they don't seem to ring very much. Are they set up rather close together? Also, it looks like you use Evans heads. Do you use Evans for your snare as well? And for your resonant heads? Thanks.
Great video, been looking to progress through my drumming (been playing for 5 years off and on) and this might be the most simplistic, yet effective form of teaching I've found on here yet.
Thanks, you make it easy to transfer on to my own kit. I will admit I'm one of those guys that no matter the groove I end up going nutz and doing the spastic fill!!
i like your advice and term you've pointed out/coined about how you need to let your beat and fills BREATHE. excellent advice. if only everyone could choose this approach to drumming. talk to you soon bud!
I replied with a video, I tried to use what you teach here in it...but I don't know how well I did. I wish I had your kit though >.>. I don't have double bass and my crash is cracked. WOO HOO. At least my old broken crash sounds like a china sort of, haha. MAKESHIFT BOOMSTAND TIME!
This is a great help, thanks... I never thought about taking time with my fills, having minor stops in between them and everything. So instead of just beating the crap out of my snare and toms every time there's a fill I think I'll add a groovy fill to it! Thanks!
have you ever used any other evans heads? just wondering which you prefer. i bought some evans coated g2's just trying to find a good sound for my toms and they are ok but wondering what you prefer, thanks.
@vansdrumming ok thanks. what bass head do you use? i have an aquarian superkick II which seems to be the best from reviews i have read but i've only played for about 11 months so i'm pretty new to all the brands and models. your lessons are very helpful by the way!!!
@kaputa814 i use evans heads on my kit, i use EC2 on my toms, but they arent coated, nice clear things with the mesh around the edges and the bass (just cos i like putting it in here cos everyone should check it out) is an emad bass head, they sound sweet as and huge, and you dont need to put anything in your bass drum like so many people like to do, im still experimenting with snare heads, but thats what ive found are the best for the other drums
@HarryMSP ok thanks, the only way to get my bass to stop ringing is to put a small pillow in it. it sounds pretty good now, i like the sound of all my heads but i need to tighten up my snare head. i'll upload some more vids soon. thanks for the help.
I just listened to this guy prove what I always said (although about 100 times better than I could say it) its all about the groove, not how much noise you can make. I love listening/watching the young guys "hey, look how fast and cool I am (I sound like shit, but damn I'm fast) :)
hey man i love this vid.....and im curious to know.....what you think about some of the gospel drummers and the crazy fills they have now a days... i understand and respect your whole theory on opening the fills up more..........me myself im a pocket drummer, im not into all the tuff fills, but i try to implement the music instead of trying to have the eyes on me....im just curious on what you think about those crazy fills in gospel drummers
Hey it's definitively the best way to start creating musical fills.
If I say dynamics? I think It's a mistake to not talk about dynamics. Dynamics change everything
With that being said, some example doesn't feel right to me, like starting with 3 flams.
Drummers, don't forget dynamics, a bunch of 16th notes could sound nice If you play ghost notes with some accents musically. Of course, if you do the same volume all the way, it doesn't feel good
I have heard Dave Weckl comment on this concept . This idea that fills should at least imply if not almost mimick the groove .
On an unrelated matter ... @Vansdrumming ... when you do the silly non musical fills you should refrain from banging your head and whipping your arms . It looks like you are mocking metal drummers .
No he's just showing what does not fit in that groove. Even if you're a metal drummer I doubt if you'd wave your arms and shit playing a jazz or funk groove.
I am nit saying to always do it. It is just something to think about to get more creative with your fills. Break out of the box and get away from the standard fills every time. RVP
I bought this book because you plugged it. Thanks! I really enjoy it. When my skills get a little more developed, I'm going to have to make a thank-you video to all the drummers on youtube who've helped me immensely.
As flip as this may sound ... I agree with Joelwhitehouse about youtube and how it has helped drummers .
First ... you know where the bar is now . There is no excuse for not knowing about great drummers past and present . You can watch the worlds best drummers any time you want with a click of the mouse .
Second ... there are countless lessons dealing with everything from hand and foot technique to soloing concepts ..from fills to grooves .. to equipment .
Thank-you so much this video has helped me improve my fills so much I have only been playing for about a year and I will admit I always rip it up when it comes to fills but Now I have realized that it's not getting me anywhere and I need to let my fills breath I thank you so much keep making videos please
I've only been playing for about a year now, and all your videos have been extremely helpful, but this one has opened my eyes more than any other video. It has made me so much more creative with my fills, as crappy as they may be...
This is great, however, when composing I usually structure my fills based on what the guitar, bass, or vocal is doing. I may be playing a certain groove and before the chorus the guitar player does a palm mute triplet thing, so I'll structure my fill to follow his lick. If you're composing songs and are stuck on fills, listen to what those around you are doing for inspiration. This guy is awesome though. Not trying to take away anything he's saying or teaching.
I love Dream Theater, in fact, it's my favourite band. However, Mike Portnoy should follow this advice, I feel that sometimes he just gets too excited. Listen to the ending of "Finally Free" from "Scenes From a Memory" and tell me...
this is probably the most useful video that i have seen on here. you are very informative but not in a condescending way. thank you for helping. ps: 9:28....helarious.
but i think if a newbie watched this vid theyd take it the wrong way, u talk as if your fills hav to be th same rhythm as the beat your playing, now this takes it two ways...if the newbie believes this they clearly shouldnt carry on twith th intrument orrrr your video is completnly restricting any creative thought which should tottaly be attached with drumming and any intrument out there
Personally I think this video would be much easier to understand than teaching a newbie how to play in the same style, feel, dynamic etc. Rhythm is the easiest part of drumming to learn.
Imagine if after the little bossa nova groove in the intro, he explained the characteristics of the genre and how to embody them in 2-4 counts worth of drumming at a time. It would be a wreck, this is the starting point, being conscious of what you play, what you're going to play, and what you just played.
i agree on my fills im technical about but never thot of what ur saying but i remember now that i think about it I naturally do the same kinda fills with the same-ish beats haha peace DUNNY DRUNNER DUNBAR.
just start exercising ur leg muscles like at a gym and if u dont hav one just walk more than u usually do thats how i got my leg muscle and it doesnt get tired easily
