I heard the explosion and watched the flames also saw the ash from peoples homes rain down. Actually, it was reduced to 12.5% in the 2001 budget which is practically nothing. Compare that to Norway, where there is a 78% tax rate and 7% royalty rate.
frist of all it is 12.5%, second the Government are able to make companies exempt from tax, many of the the multi nationals setup in Ireland because the Government gave them 5 to 10 years tax breaks.

Mayo has always experienced massive emigration,what if other Irish Land Owners rejected the ESB electricity High Tension Pilons going over their what would become of the Irish Economy? What happened to the EPA...that they could approve this shows a lack of conscience which is what I thought they were supposed to stand for. From the shores of New York I will never use Shell and I hope that the Irish Politicians will wake up and do the right thing.

Being Irish I agree with most everything said here, but too many points you made focused on how you are not getting your share of the money. How much will it take to win you over? If Shell gives you 10%, will the pipeline be okay with you then? It has been, and always be, the right of all governments to buy back their citizens land. It happens here in America all the time, why wouldn't it happen in Mayo?

Firstly, in this case, the government isn't buying the land, it is seizing it for use by a multi-national in response to Acquisition Orders obtained illegally. Secondly, the royalty fee obtained by Norway is 70%, how about that?

Mayo has always experienced massive emigration,what if other Irish Land Owners rejected the ESB electricity High Tension Pilons going over their what would become of the Irish Economy? The folks in Rossport have not moved because they live the good life down there give Mayo a Chance at Economic developement before its too late!!

That's a facile comparison. Pylons don't pose an immediate threat to safety and don't involve a giveaway of natural resources. Secondly, what economic development? Ireland will not receive royalties and Shell are under no obligation to avail of Irish employment. "Before it's too late" sounds like the scare tactics the government uses to push through expensive and illogical projects like the M3, Port Tunnel etc.

i feel sick inside after watching this. i'm sure that this happens anywhere on earth where a profit can be made. We must be optimistic for the future though because we now have the power of the internet and its reach to hundreds of milions of people who are sick of this sort of thing.

This moved me to tears, im living abroad with my Canadian wife but Im returning home this and other vids show what IMO amounts to the few metropolitan elites war on Gaelic Culture. At the very least it shows their disregard for our heritiga and all our ancestors fought for over 800 years of occupation.
