Undoubtedly, Religion DOES NOT make you a better person, just like how laws have not stopped people from commiting crimes. Spirituality, on the other hand allows you to become closer to the awareness of your soul, what you are capable of, and the true nature of who you really are: love. I can't speak for other atheists, but I certainly would not force my child to be an atheist. I would simply equip my child with the critical thinking skills s/he needs to make the decision that is right for him/her. If s/he decides to be an atheist, great. If s/he wants to be a Christian/Muslim/Buddhist/etc. that's fine too.
I seriously doubt that. You are strong in your beliefs. You arent Ok with me saying that God exists, nevermind your own son/doughter. So when your kid is 7 and asks if their is a God, you would respond " I dont think so, how about you? That alone is a huge influence on the child. I doubt their would be adult christians in her life. So from a verry young age all her family and all adults around her would be athiests. That is more than enough for the child to make up its mind that their is no God.
I assume that you are old enough that you have already made your decision. Maybe I'm wrong to assume that, but you definitely communicate like an adult. If the child is 7 I simply don't say much regarding religion because at that age, it's indoctrination and actually indoctrination bothers me more than anything. Sure, maybe I might unconsciously influence the child, but there is no atheist equivalent to the Christian or Muslim "you have to believe in order to avoid hell".
I am only human, so I can't be perfect, but I'll do my best to leave the decision up to my child. I certainly won't force anything on him/her. the other thing is that despite how outspoken I am about religion, I can get along with religious people and I don't have to fear any consequences of my child becoming religious whereas in a religious upbringing, the parents usually approach a child that comes out as atheist with disappointment, anger, or sadness.
but although in many cases one raises children to have the same faith they do, I know a few people who have allowed their children to explore different faiths.
The only fair way to let your kids learn about religion , IN MY OPINION, is to not introduce them to any of it until they are old enough to understand what you are telling them. I know that isnt possible because of the holidays we celebrate and how they have to be explained at an early age.

yea, i know what you mean. i had hard time taking god out of my life as well. it's like suddenly taking your mom out of your life and trying to think that she didn't even existed. It was hard but it also made me mad that ppl filled me with bunch of crap that I accepted an invisible man as true as the fact that i have hands.

Two things missing: a charismatic leader with hallucinations of god or angels. A concis but not too concise holy book. That along with the stuff in the video is the start of a new religion.

@Ramshobraja : just a charismatic leader is fine. Actually having him get hallucinations is probably a bad thing, since it shows how we can't be trusted to distinguist fantasy from reallity.
Him having FAKE halluciations is fine, and recomended even, but real ones are a problem.

actually you're wrong about eastern religion and reincarnation. The very idea of karma is a reward/punishment system. If you do good, you get a better life next time around. If you do bad, you get a worse one. Rewards and punishment. That also explains why the guy in charge gets to take your money. He was REALLY good last time around, and therefore deserves your money.

Undoubtedly, Religion DOES NOT make you a better person, just like how laws have not stopped people from commiting crimes. Spirituality, on the other hand allows you to become closer to the awareness of your soul, what you are capable of, and the true nature of who you really are: love. It most definitely makes you happier, more peaceful, more loving, and generally enriches your life. Spirituality invites you to find your own truth and self, religion begs you to accept someone elses.

I can't speak for other atheists, but I certainly would not force my child to be an atheist. I would simply equip my child with the critical thinking skills s/he needs to make the decision that is right for him/her. If s/he decides to be an atheist, great. If s/he wants to be a Christian/Muslim/Buddhist/etc. that's fine too.

I seriously doubt that. You are strong in your beliefs. You arent Ok with me saying that God exists, nevermind your own son/doughter. So when your kid is 7 and asks if their is a God, you would respond " I dont think so, how about you? That alone is a huge influence on the child. I doubt their would be adult christians in her life. So from a verry young age all her family and all adults around her would be athiests. That is more than enough for the child to make up its mind that their is no God.

I assume that you are old enough that you have already made your decision. Maybe I'm wrong to assume that, but you definitely communicate like an adult. If the child is 7 I simply don't say much regarding religion because at that age, it's indoctrination and actually indoctrination bothers me more than anything. Sure, maybe I might unconsciously influence the child, but there is no atheist equivalent to the Christian or Muslim "you have to believe in order to avoid hell".

I am only human, so I can't be perfect, but I'll do my best to leave the decision up to my child. I certainly won't force anything on him/her. the other thing is that despite how outspoken I am about religion, I can get along with religious people and I don't have to fear any consequences of my child becoming religious whereas in a religious upbringing, the parents usually approach a child that comes out as atheist with disappointment, anger, or sadness.

I realized that wasn't exactly the best wording,
but although in many cases one raises children to have the same faith they do, I know a few people who have allowed their children to explore different faiths.

The only fair way to let your kids learn about religion , IN MY OPINION, is to not introduce them to any of it until they are old enough to understand what you are telling them. I know that isnt possible because of the holidays we celebrate and how they have to be explained at an early age.

Actually it seems like he was disagreeing with you. He was saying that an atheist wouldn't neccessarily raise an atheist.
But even then I think the point is more that I don't hear of very many muslims raising buddhists or christians raising hindus.

Also, in relation to what you said about a religion being more "evolutionarily viable" so to speak if it has a favorable view towards science, psychiatry and psychology are both psuedo-sciences, which helps to explain the new religion's rapidly growing prosperity in today's environment of rampant atheism. Although many people are now too savvy to believe in god, most are as a result even more gullible towards people who parade as scientists and offer quasi-religious insight into human behavior.

are you a scientologist? i ask because they are the only other people who speak out against the study of brains and behavior. rampant atheism? atheism is simply not believing in magic in a society where a deity named God is the most popular for of magic. i wouldnt describe our times as rampant clear level headed critical thinking. I think we still live in the dark ages of humanity- as evidence look at the prevalence of religion.
