@Schone23666 Accuracy is only slighty different, your spread at 300 yards may be a 1/2 to an inch bigger. I have fired a full size many times and there is literaly no difference, a side from the fact the socom 2 and 16 have no bayonet lug lol. As far as the socom 16 and socom 2, they are the exact same. The socom 2 has that front rail system that makes it heavy and uncomfortable... and ugly (opinion). U may like the M14 scout. Its on Springfiels site, check it out.

I was in the Marine Corps and I'm pretty sure it depends really how far your trying to shoot. I would think with that 16 in barrel atleast 500yards with the Nato round.

At about 300 yards with match grade ammo a seasoned, but not expert, shooter will have about 3 inch spread. At 400 yards the same shooter will have around 11 inch spread. It comes from the radicaly shortened gas mechanism and 16 1/4 inch barrel.

A shorter barrel usually means less velocity and accuracy, but it's still going to be a pretty accurate rifle no matter what. I was reading that this rifle actually has the shortest barrel you can buy legally.

You can still legally own a rifle with a shorter barrel, its just that theres a lot more red tape involved. 16" is the shortest barrel length you can have for a rifle, without having to register it as a "Short Barreled Rifle" and having to pay addittional taxes and fees.

No such caliber. There's 7.62x51mm NATO and then there's .308 Winchester. They are safely interchangeable but not identical.

well that is a M-1 rifle made by springfield. So it is an M-14 just shorter and they called it the socom 16. Plus it is still a 308 cal.

depends on the weapon, not all M14's are full auto and the same is true for the socom 16's. The ones that are would have a selector switch just behind the rear sight. A .308cal is 7.62 mm but so is a 30.06. It is just a different measurment.

I dont think Springfield is building auto Socom's for anybody right now. There just isnt a market for it anymore. You would know if it was auto or just rapid firing. The M14 had a cyclic rate of 750 rounds per minute. 308 and 30.06 are both 7.62, but the Nato case length is 51mm and the 30.06 case is 63mm long.

sub moa at what distance? they have a M1A target match rifle (full size).You are really gunna pay to have it done if you are trying to accomplish that with the short socom 16 version. You will have to get a new barrel bull of fluted, do some work with the bedding. also test as many kinds of ammo as you can.

The socom or any .308 battle rifle is not a good choice for in home defense its terminal ballistics make it dangerous for friendly others, this round will in most circumstances penetrate an entire house and that is not good.

Well nothing can compare to a shotgun or a handgun for quick home defense. However i think the socom is a great home defense weapon because it is compact, accurate and packs one hell of a punch, being a 308. It comes with night sights too so you wont miss when its dark.
