The belly dancing styles cannot be more different between male and female dancers. The male dancer in this video has very sharp and rhythmic moves whereas the female dancers featured in related videos dance with fluidity and mellow moves. Negative comments about this male dancer obviously ignore the level of artistry displayed in his dance.

I've heard from Arabic men that men started the art of bellydance to entertain themselves when they were away on long treks in the desert and there were no women with them.

They'd get up and imitate women.

The movements done by a male dancer are very different then when done by a female. No gender has a monopoly on artistic expression. Like singing and playing instruments, it is a human form of artistic expression. Both men and women have the right to dance as they wish.

i still think women are best bellydancers. The curve of a women's hips are beautifully designed to entice the opposite sex. Men's hips are narrow and unless you are gay, there is no comparison with a women's.

No offence but he doesn't have to be gay to bellydance. Although most americans and insecure males find it to look gay doesn't mean everyone does. Great choreography, travels on stage....He enjoys what he's doing, has audience participation and a great finale! He has to be one of the top bellydancers in the world. Its very obvious that he's an effeminate gay man and the combination of his being and your perception of the dance challenges the perceived order of gender roles and what that means. HE may be gay and very feminine in his being, but the dance itself is really not feminine at all. Its only the comercial version that has been presented that way. The real dance is a folkloric social dance done by both sexes. Check out my clips especially Dance and the Egyptian people. There's more to the dance and culture than most people realize.

In countries such as Polynesia and Africa the origin of belly dancing don't show that it was specifically a dance exclusively for women. On the other hand however Egyption and Middle Eastern belly dancing only ever showed it was for women.

He's not Middle Eastern and he is obviously gay based on the way he carries himself and I'm not crazy about his costume taste, but he is good. The professional dance we see started in the nightclubs in the 1930s to entertain male tourists. That's why its been exclusively female. Its time for the art ot evolve to a higher level now, not just to be eye candy for men. Everyone who can dance with talent and class should be able to do so

Actaully gay or straight does matter as this is a middle eastern dance that is only for women, not men. There are specific dances for men too.

That's not true. The stage version is based on the folkdance Raks BAladi that everyone does at home for fun, man and woman. The only reason we see mostly women performing is because in the 19th century Male tourist came to the ME and only wanted to see women perform secondly dancing has always been considered a low profession, so it doesn't attract many men. However, as an art it belongs to everyone and now men are perfoming as well
