It just goes to show that to be that good you ALWAYS need a good sense of humour! I mean, 'Mozart was dead at the time, but nobody knew it..'! How cool is that?
I've met Ritchie 3x...he was always great to me, I'll never have a bad word to say about him. You either get his humor or you don't...those that don't just tend to not like him at all. Needless to say, he had me cracking up during this interview, especially the Mozart bit.
@ratbatblu absolutely..that part was hilarious...and i have started doing (dry humour ) this after seeing him do this in quite a few interviewes ( check out the one with rainbow where he says he expects the lead singer to occasionally drop his pants )......irritates the hell outta my friends who dont get it :D
FYI-Ritchie's fingering the E7#9 chord at 1:14 doesn't quite equate to "Playing Henrix's tunes so easily." Nor does his playing the "Fire" riff, which he plays incorrectly, by the way.
@soumyaaymous because Ians singing is terrible nowadays. Actually,it has been for the last, like 20-25 years or so... Just listen to child in time in the early days, than in the 80's and now,and you'll get the gist of what I'm sayin'
@jaganjacfan well i follow gillan's site called caramba ( check it out if u like gillan) ..there sm1 asked what his highest note was when he was at his best...to this he said its strange that one would equate hitting the highest note with him being at his best...he says that he thinks currently he is at his best as he has more control over his voice than he did in the past...i guess people judge child in time a lot by those famous high notes ( B5 or A5 i think) ....he cant do those anymore...
There are 7 notes (with sharps & flats).. gotta remember that. when a progression works it has to fit with other notes within the scale. You can ring a lot of different notes together also, but not ALL of them work, you'd know, it would just sound like shit unless you progressed in some way to another key. point is everything's been done so let's not harp on Ritchie for "stealing" anything when the songs sound fuckin' great!
it is a remarkable thing how Blackmore shows his disrespect for DP. He even tries to make it look like he has partly forgotten the notes, which is hardly possibly. Reminds me of Harrison's "previous incarnation" talks, but in a more rude way. Like "all that was total crap". Should we talk about Blackmore's night latest disk? that's where stealing shines full..
I don't think that he disrespects Deep Purple. Still he plays Deep Purple songs with his band "Blackmore's Night".. Would he do this if he disrespects the music ?? Songs like Child in time for example, or of course Smoke on the Water.
I don't like Blackmore's Night too, but if he wants to do this.. why not ?
But I don't see any thing in this interview which shows disrespect like you say..
@assa123assa123 Wow! I didn't realize DP had stolen music. Like Led Zeppelin, huh. Now, I LOVE DP & LZ music, but it isn't right to steal withoug crediting.
there are only two things for me , very originals from Blackmore, the first is the way he combined the stolen part , and the second is his own stile , don´t get me wrong , I like very much Deep Purple.
Looks like Ritchie started to dislike Gillan's "change" of voice that occured as time passed. His voice is really unique and not like any other and maybe that's what bothered Ritchie, because he wanted Deep Purple to be him, when you think of Deep Purple, to think first of him. But with Gillan on stage with him that just couldn't happen because they're both great!
Hahaha.... Ritchie Blackmore is an absolute champion - My fav guitarist - But I couldn't agree more about your philosophy about why they couldn't share the stage ;)
"ian did a good job there... he was in good shape in that time.. he could.... sing AT THAT PART....
I love Blackmore-Gillan fights soooo much!! So funny!LOL! They both have a great sense of humor, they are both amazing musicians, just too selfish to work together..for a long period of time..But in the mid-time theres no doubt they have created miracles...!!!
yes , in studio is amazing but in live he always break guitars and in his solos, he didn´t make music , he did noise. steve never never did that stupid things.
nope. thats his real hair. or so it looks anyways. hes into not only medieval music but the side of life and people in those days wore wigs so...i wonder myself lol
He is a bit crazy and of course he admits himself to be very moody, but in my opinion he looks like a great guy! and of course he is the best guitarist there ever was and will be!
There are rumours that Smoke On The Water was based on a brazilian song called "Maria Moita", by Nara Leão.
Since Claude Nobs has been a fan of her, Ritchie heard that song and got inspired.
I think we'll never know if this is true, but I suggest you to search in YT for "Maria Moita" and listen to it. It's been actually written before Smoke On The Water.
"unlikeanyotherhuman", u hav to understand that blackmore is an asshole. two things...he "held back" for the interview im sure and two, he has indeed changed since then. he was an asshole cause of gillan. gillan was an asshole cause of blackmore. they no longer play together. i guess u can say he is like this NOW but back when...no.
Ritchie claims that he wrote the music to 'Highway Star', but Gillan and Glover both claim that he wasn't with the rest of the band when GLOVER wrote it, so one question: who do we believe? :)
i'm not talking about what he is saying in this interview, i'm talking about what he says whenever he is asked who wrote the songs. He has stated several times that he composed the music himself and Gillan wrote the lyrics alone also, but Gillan and Glover both claim that the music was composed by Glover and Ritchie wasn't even on the tour bus they wrote it on so he had nothing to do with it.
Highway Star was written on a tour bus on the way to a gig, a jounalist on the bus asked how they write songs..Ritchie said..like this ..and started to play the tune, then the others joined in...the song opened the show that same night.
"We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet" by the Blues Magoos (1967) was probably the closer antecedent of Black Night. Very popular song that summer...god what a year.
There is a difference between ripping off someone and being inspired by someone. I wouldn't say he ripped him off, I don't think Mozart would be looking for retribution for being riipped off on Highway star :-) We've all been inspired by someone.
You can go back even further. niggers stole the blues from anglo saxon and celtic folk and country music. There was no `blues` in Africa. They came here and heard white man`s music. All black blues is shit. It took Elvis to make it listenable. LOL
The fact that at this point Ritchie was willing to admit that Ian Gillan had a good voice, even sarcastically, is enough for me to tell that, at least to some small degree, Ritchie has forgiven Ian. If it's the same for the other side, however, I can't tell...
I get a lot of flak for supposedly "stealing" other sounds and riffs, People tend to forget there are only 12 defined notes!~ And as for the melodies well with the exception of the all time great composers, hell the Beatles too ALL of them already! all we have are leftovers. Great interview Ritchie!
I talked to Ritchie one time when a radio station did an interview with him and fans could call in. Ritchie was very nice to me, talking with me at length. (Thank you, Ritchie). They say he's temperamental but I'm sure he just wants to be treated with respect. I now know he's also honest.
Everyone can get an impression. Like Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven is very smilar to a folk song. Or Hotel California of Eagles, same chords with Jethro Tull's "We Used to Know". It's not a crime or something. It's music for god's sake. You can't blame Ritchie for stealing Black Night's riffs or Jimmy Page for completely forgetting that the song Dazed And Confused belongs to Jake Holmes and putting his sign under it.
