that is freakin awesome. Reminds me of the power surge I experienced as a kid. Only I was near a tree it hit 10 ft over my head and launched me about 8ft away. I was like 10yrs old.Had a bunch of pinhole sized holes in my t-shirt from the sparks from the tree.
If you can keep freeze-framing it through the 14 second mark you'll see that it strikes the left side of the lamp on top of the pole. There then appears to be a straight line discharge to the ground just to the left of the pole, although this could be a trick of the light as the reflection in the wet parking lot doesn't seem to bear this out.
Lightning's shock wave is supersonic when you're about 20 feet away from the bolt - you can feel it as a pressure wave but it's not actually sound. It's only when you're farther away that the wave decays to subsonic and sounds like thunder.
Seems like you were further than 20 feet, but I guess what I'm saying is that when you're close enough to a lightning bolt it doesn't sound like thunder.
Lightning that close doesn't cause a boom. the boom you usually hear is due to the distance the sound waves travel deepening the sound. In the case of a very close strike, there is no distance to travel, and strikes like this often sound like gunshots, or quick explosions.
I am in no way contesting your point, but I am wondering... Lightning struck a tree outside my house and it sounded like a bomb or something. What made this happen? Could it have been the tree itself being dehydrated so rapidly?
Most lamps like that are fitted with a local grounding rod so if they are struck the current will be harmlessly discharged to earth. Lamp posts are common targets for lightning strikes, because the "sodium" lamps they use actually give off a small magnetic charge that attracts the lighning.
Sure does, but if you're this close to the strike (looks like about 75 feet) you're not far enough away to hear the air surrounding the stroke expanding. The rolling of thunder comes from echoes off buildings...
very nice .. i was on my bike yeh and it was lighting and like i was wid my cuz .. and both r heads went reali reali hot like reali fast for 2 seconds then it went .. could we of got hit by lighting but i was on my bike so maybe the rubber wheels stopet it gettin earth to shock me .. was i hit?

wow, that must have been really loud, like an M80 going off.
i know, because i did exactly what you did and filmed it too.
on camera, the sound isnt the same as it is in person, and neither is the flash.
its is extremely bright, nearly blinding and the sound will make your ears ring briefly.
that must have scared the living shit out of you.

thats weird, there was no thunder..always thought there was thunder that follows lightning
