@kyuubimon You're not asking me, but I've been playing for years and while it's certainly not difficult, as with anything, it takes practice to get a good tone out of it, which is key.
Hello I got a recorder and a fife. I liked more the shape of the vibe, now that I saw your video I know I picked right because the sound is not so high pitched and it is more "airy" and warm than recorder`s. You are good. I am using the fingering chart and trying to get along with blues scales maybe for playing stuff like bossa nova. Hope you could give me some advice! And thanks for uploading
You play that thing like a leprechaun boss. I got that same fife a few days ago and managed to squeeze a few notes out of it yesterday, then I passed out from lack of air
can you use the same technique when blowing the fife as when blowing into a flute or are the techniques different?, coz i can't get a sound out of my fife, and its the same one yamaha c fife
@LeHoangAstonUni you mean its not playing anything? or does it just sound airy? when i first started playing mine didnt really play good either, how much air are you blowing into it? these fifes are kind of tricky, you need to tighten up your lips and blow hard, but not way too hard. when you blow too hard that also does not create a sound. :)
@pipurrcat WOW looking at your videos helped me a lot. I realised the way I blew it was totally wrong :D (I covered the blowing hole with my lips as if it was a Recorder). Anyway, it does produce notes now but I still need a lot of practices.
How long did it take you to get to this level of playing? You seem to be very interested in wind instruments :D
@LeHoangAstonUni haha yes, wind instruments are awesome :) it took me about a year to get at this level with the fife, but that was also when i was younger. good luck with your fife :)
Wow, this is really awesome! You sure got talent!"How long have you been playing?
Other than that, I've got a question: do you have the fingering chart for this fife? I have also one, but problem is, I've lost that paper, which I deeply regret. I've been searching everywhere, and I'm stuck. Do you think you can help me out? PM me if you want to.
Thanks, and all the best for your continuation in music!
hay i have a question. is the yamaha fife any good caus i read some online reviews and theyr vary mixed AKA openions vary. So main question how is the yamaha fife for someone who has never played a fife in his life? oh and what good is the 8 wholes thing?
well, i would say start out with recorder or regular flute, thats what i did. but i will admit when i first started the fife i couldnt get my high notes out very well, but if you practice it will get better.
ok, rite now im workin on irish tin whistle but i just was wondering beacaus i would like to learn to play irish flute but so expensive so i figured the whistle would give me the notes, and this would give me the blowing techneec, so thanks for the advice :) ill do some recorder befor i take this up.
okay, and yeah i do believe that i was maybe too close to the camera, im thinking that i should do "cooleys reel" as my next song for the fife, what do you think?
I can't figure out how to play this fife thing, but you did good.

Are the fingerings all that different from flute/piccolo? (I play both)
I mean I expect them to be 'cause it has less holes, but I was just wondering if they're similar at all.
Joyous96 11 months ago
@Joyous96 it is mostely the same
pipurrcat 11 months ago
@Joyous96 And with a bit more finesse than she's putting into it, you can get a really pretty tone out of it.

hi! I have some question about playing fife...
I got a Yamaha C fife, which is the same as yours
and from the fingering chart, it shows that some of the notes are of the same fingering, but that two notes are of different octaves (i.e. E & high E)
Thus i don't know how to blow two different notes by using the same fingering
Can you tell me how to do it, or just the fingering chart is wrong? :P
I hope you understand what I mean and can answer my question ^^
by the way, you play it awesome!
Terabilyfae 1 year ago
@Terabilyfae you just have to blow harder. :)
pipurrcat 1 year ago
@pipurrcat Well, you could do that, or you could roll the fife forward a bit to get a different pitch without changing your volume

Does a fife in C or D have the same fingering as a Tin Whistle in C or D?
RulerOfRock666 2 years ago
well, not really, because the fife has a thumbhole and the lowest note is C.....
pipurrcat 2 years ago
That's cool! You might try just being a little further away from the mic to avoid the distortion. Please keep em coming!
