Then, I go to Army Development and Selection Centre Lichfield for another 2 days to complete, yes, a medical, along with physical and mental tests, interviews, team-tasks etc. And even then if I get a date to start Basic Training, I'm not "in" as you would say, until I've completed my 14 weeks training.

@vanPoll In that case he's totally fked. He's not a soldier. There's no way he could fight off the Taliban, and if he was armed that'd jsut mean they'd shoot him on the spot rather than kidnap him, and kidnap has at least a possibility of release. The terms of him being there was that he should be trained with weapons but could only take one up if they were surrounded and getting slaughtered.
Got to respect him for being there in danger and unarmed. Man has brass ones.

@Taud No matter a medic or journalist you do have the right to defend your self. Where he may not be authorized to carry a weapon into theater. He can be issued a weapon to defend himself from command if the situation requires it, being overrun (ie...joe galloway), etc.. Fantastic journalism. keep your head down and watch six.

@carpetfarmer No they arent, any journalist or CIV that picks up and uses a weapon in a war situation when you are not a soldier, you can be charged internationally because you were NOT a soldier, you would be a militant or something of the like, I as well enjoy his work im not trying to start a fight, but nah dude seriously, they cant just "issue" a journalist or CIV any kind of weapon, only they can protect him and shoot, its against the rules of engagement

@Taud You are correct, Ross Kemp would be under arrest if he did use a fire arm against someone even if they are commiting a terrosist act which would under normal Rules of Engagement allow a Regular Combatant to open fire in order to remove a threat. The exception to this is that if for example, Kemp was with troops that were being overrun and the Taliban were to take aim at him then he can under the Law of Armed Conflict open fire in order to defend his own life.

These individuals are not authorized by overnmental authority or the LOAC to engage in hostilities." so in other words that violates the LOAC as well. Journalists no matter what are not permitted to bare any arms what so ever, doing that can get you into trouble they could consider you a vigilante or a militant they identify their vehicles and vests with letters like "TV" in an effort to take them out of the action

However if Kemp was in a situation where the Patrol was being overrun and if a terrorist was about to open fire upon him and his only remaining option to avoid being killed was to use, for example a casualties weapon against him then he would not be jailed for doing so as long as he can justify that such an act was his only remaining option of surviving.
