  • I think it was a failure because they had someone who does not have good intention and ruled the town, called Jim jones, preaching all these nonsense and eventually, ruined everyone's lives. If they had someone who is genuinely good and caring, then jonestown would've been still alive until now.

  • Think for yourselves, or someone will do it for you!

  • What an excellent documentary. Part 9 was really hard to watch, it broke my heart, but it was the way things went, anyway. Thank you @ghostdance202 for uploading it.

  • "Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it." Thank you for uploading this powerful documentary. I hope that we can all learn from this tragic event.

  • anyone thirsty?

  • I remember this being on the evening news. Had a hard time drinking Kool Aid after this event as a kid. I personally think that it should be taught in the class rooms. Kids should be made aware of all of the sick and demented people that were and are still are there in today's society.

  • sad(

  • Whatch out for wesboro, theyre next

  • Jim Jones was not the last of them.. there's more of them out there plying their trade as prophets and saviours and people willing to believe everything they say, people who would die for them. It's so sad.

  • this is so tragic.. i can't believe i didn't knew anything about it

  • :'-( poor people

  • This was not a mass suicide, he forced them to take that poison or else they would get shot and die. Its a horrible thing and nobody deserves that. I honestly cant believe what some people are capable of.

  • I remember watching this documentary for school in the 8th grade, I can't exactly remember why. I'm watching it again because I have to write an article about it for my 11th grade history class. I think more schools should teach this story, it's an important part of history and should be included in schools.

  • the thing that i got from this is that anyone can be brainwashed given the right circumstanes

  • I was born on November 18..Such a sad day for so many people..

  • I was related to Leo Ryan the Congressman. He was my grandma's cousin. I saw him soon before he died at a family reunion. I'm so proud that he cared enough to go down there.

  • that last guy that was showed there with his hand on his face, he was one of the people from the plane that lived. he and the news guy ran threw the jungle to escape the gun men. they were both shot in the arms or legs i think. PBS left a lot out of this.

  • jim jones- i used to rule in jonestown, then i took a bullet to the head

  • @MultiZiemia it is one of these forgotten things that people turn a blind eye. hell, even hanging on the ceiling of the paviilion stated that those who fail to learn from the past are condemn to repeat it.

  • religion kills everything

  • thanks ghostdance for sharing this documentary. as for the sync problem you mentioned in a few places well it wasn't even bad enough to mention. i think you did a great job.

  • why are you blaming the people who died and calling them stupid for killing themselves? these people had absolutely no freedom anymore, they were trapped and they knew they would die anyway. i guess they thought drinking poison and dying in peace would be more dignified than being shot while trying to escape.

  • I've watched this documentary I've read some pages on the internet and a question still yells in my head: Why those people committed suicide?

    I simply don't understand....

  • Shit like this makes me wonder where the fuck God was. None of those people deserved that horrible fate except one. RIP to the dead. Well, except JJ.

  • jim jones was a monster who i hope is buring in the lowest level of hell right now!

  • Comment removed

  • I am planning to teach this when I get my history degree.

  • I hate this religion bullshit >_< stupid people...

  • this is proganda at its most evil best: this man makes me sick to brainwash this people and the amount of warning they had to leave.... this is just sickening

I still cry for the children who died......

  • people say `that`s religion`. Really, that is human nature, that is the power of violence, that is the weakness of one person in the face of insanity, that is the danger of human groups when they get together, that is the danger of groups with passionate beliefs, that is the danger of being a social animal. There are a lot more things than religion happening here.

  • Thank you for posting this, it needed to be said.

  • my heart breaks

  • it is so important to read the bible your self and not just follow what a person tells you to read in it. even the the words of the bible can be manipulated and used for evil if you only see what an evil person wants you to see, and never see what God wants to show you. the bible tells us over and over again that we WILL suffer here in this life... knowing this makes it so obviose that jones was against Gods word and wanted to BE God, and not a follower of Christ. please read Gods word, not mans

  • That's humanity and religion for you..... so sad. This could have happened to anyone of us.

  • @Eslamizar Thats humanity and religion that has been abused and misused; in which it turned into a socialistic- utopia dictation method lead by Jim Jones. Or to say the least "Brainwash".

  • :(

  • This is communism in action.

  • @mynameismeowth There was probably no 1 point where he went insane. He was probably a narcissistic personality, a psychopath, someone who lacks empathy and takes pleasure in manipulating others. Hurting animals as a kid is a huge warning sign of psychopathy. I think he surrounded himself as some one who cared about religion and civil rights because it helped him get close to less powerful, more disadvantaged people who made ideal potential victims.

  • 1) They couldnt do anything to save their family or they would get shot and 2) this ending piano music is amazing and chilling ....

  • A senseless act all in the name of peace.

  • Jonestown, Communism, Nazism, Militant Islam (in pursuit of the Caliphate), etc. Whoever tries to create Paradise on earth - according to whatever vision - will always end up unleashing hell and the death of the innocent.

  • @Kristradamus You seem to have left out many groups in that assessment. Don't forget all of the Native Americans murdered by Christians looking to find a paradise.

  • Jim Jones is probably sharing a bed with Osama Bin Laden, the 9/11 Hijackers, and Hitler.

My Dad knew some people in Jonestown....

  • I wonder why they don't teach this?

why more people don't know about it?

  • @MoralesLiz01 i'm learning about this in school, i think it should definitely be spoken about more. such a tragedy.

  • @MoralesLiz01 Probably because they don't want to give Jim Jones what he ultimately wanted, which was to go down in history and to be remembered for what he did. I think its important for people to know but it shouldn't be "taught" in classes. There is nothing to teach, this is just pure evil here.

  • @MoralesLiz01 You're right, this was not taught in history class.

  • @MoralesLiz01 My son learned about this in his US History class. I'm sure the majority of kids won't learn about this though.

  • shame such a shame

  • This is religion in action.

  • The documentary should have specified that Jim Jones shot himself. "a shot to the head" leaves it wide open as if someone else might have shot him. The bastard put the gun in his mouth and took the easy way out.

  • @NarLiv

There is some speculation regarding his death. Some believe that when it came to it, he couldn't do it and had to be shot by one of his followers.

  • None of these survivors seem to take any responsibility for being stupid and cowardly.

  • What a dick, Jim Jones. When any Hippie friends ask me "why don't you join a community?" I always say: I'm already part of some: my neighbourhood, country, mankind, though these are rather societies than communities, which I prefer, 'cuz they leave me alone. It's open societies full of fightings & conflicts, but I can make my own decisions & be free. I have to abide some rules but can do my own thing, and I am not controlled by any dickhead next door. That's freedom and that's humane.

  • Well, that documentary managed to avoid talking about the CIA, mind control, Richard Dwyer, etc.

Anybody ever noticed that Mayor George Moscone (who was elected with the help of the Peoples Temple) was assassinated just two weeks after Jonestown? Very strange.

  • I can't believe how Jones picked the right people to give guns too. Surely, you would think among the people with privileges to guns, that at least one of them had a dissenting voice, and would have pulled the trigger on Jones. Somebody should have pleaded with the guards with guns and tell them that they had the real power, not the man with a megaphone and pleaded for them to shoot Jones. Why not, nothing to lose at that point.

  • @blackbelttube Well, that's the way it is: the ruler is hardly ever the one with the biggest club, but the one with the biggest mouth. The access to violence competence is a necessary condition for dominion/rule, but not sufficient. You've got to give people a reason to do what you want them to do. Jones had the biggest mouth on the site.

  • When I was younger I used to think it foolish that a group of people could become manipulated by one person to the point that they would allow themselves to be murdered. Now I understand that fear is a powerful thing and that it's easy to point a finger at the mistakes and declare the obvious steps that we would have taken but again, we were not there. It's a whole other story to be in a place surrounded by jungle and men with guns. To see people drink to their death, bodies unconscious on the

  • @bettyboop17d the power of religion

  • @MetallicaMadMan666 Indeed the power of religion. Lol... You should read about the history of the Unification Church. I cant believe people bought into that man's delusion.

  • that is a pretty rough situation. The only way they would be able to get out of that is if EVERYONE got together and rebelled against it. Many would have been shot but the survivors would have been able to overtake the gunners. But the problems were that there were some that believed in the cause and others that were scared. So it was difficult to get anyone to cooperate in the chaos. And it's easy for us to say we can do something when we weren't there. Being there is another story.

  • SAD AS FUCK.

Not only because so many people died, but because this man took something good and turned it into something terrible and unspeakable.

    "Absolute power corrupts absolutely..."

  • A guard should have told Jones to lead the way and shot him in the head right at the start. Once Jones had stopped ranting sanity would have prevailed.

  • I dont get it did they take the posion by themselves our were they forced to by the guards?

  • @DrXoz I believe both.. Some took the poison voluntarily and some were forced.. The pavilion was surrounded by henchmen with guns... Some took it on their own and some were forced.. Very sad documentary.. :(

  • @DrXoz They only autopsied a few bodies- 7 including Jones.

The jungle heat and insects, the number of bodies, made for a mess. It took 4 men to carefully get each one into a body bag. Some were never identified. So no one knows how many were forced at gunpoint to drink. Many were injected. Some may have gone along thinking it was just another suicide drill as they had done before. There's a lot of screaming on the tape.

The clean-up crew was traumatized- more than the survivors were.

  • FUCK JIM JONES THAT SELFISH BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT RIGHT DID HE HAVE TAKING AWAY THEIR FAMILY!!!!!

I hope that gunshot to the head turned his brain into a fucking slushie >:l

    UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • SHOCKING SHOCKING SHOCKING SHOCKING SHOCKING!

  • This is very touching.

  • This is one of the most saddest stories i've ever seen in my life, what a absolutely tragedy, when people hit bottom they want to believe & Jim Jones knew people of this time would follow this & used them as targets for his own sick play ground. These people aren't stupid they got brained washed by someone they believe gave them hope, everything built around them was seen as perfect & anything beyond it wasn't, Jim Jones created a world and used it for his own mindplay R.I.P all those poor souls

  • i saw a waco documentary and someone is tryin to say that waco and jones town has the same leader, but for my own opinion, JIM JONES is the devil in this situation and some U.S. agencies are the devils in waco,, not DAVID KORESH! now i can tell that jim jones and some devil leaders of US government are the same!!!!

  • @kent10kaye The Waco standoff was caused by koresh. He was as violent, tiwsted and as paranoid as Jones.

  • This is the saddest story ever told....

  • Religion and blind faith CAN lead to something like this. That's a fact. It is about as sad as it gets...

  • Well, the people built the movement but they followed the wrong man and it killed them. That's why you can't blindly follow leaders, they are human too and they will take you to down the wrong path if you're not careful.

  • After watching Guyana Tragedy and this documentary, what I find truly disgusting about Jim Jones is that he sat up there on his throne, spoke into the radio, and watched a lot of these people die. Then, like a true coward, he blew his own brains out with a gun instead of drinking the cyanide kool-aid and dying the same way everyone else did. He was never a leader of anything, just a sexually repressed coward who decided to take it out on those who blindly followed him.

  • I'd rather stay in laurels than follow a madman and die like an idiot.

  • @jimjonesable

Compare to Christian if you like but doesnt reflect Buddhist values very much.

We can do this all day, ur not very smart are u?

  • My heart goes out to the people that were murdered in jonestown and even more so for the friends and families that were left behind

  • This all balls down to reading your word, praying, and fasting! Know God for yourself!

  • This is why it is important to be grounded in the word of God, King James Bible, folks. Had these people known their Bible they could have avoided that cult altogether. Jim Jones was a blasphemous man who is in hell awaiting the great white throne judgment to be judged by the Lord Jesus Christ himself and sent to the lake of fire for all eternity. Don't let false religion keep you away from knowing the true and living God! Read John and Romans know how you can have eternal life.

  • compare it to islam if you want but doesnt reflect christian values very well.

  • r.i.p. jim jones, rot in piss bitch

  • i'm sorry.

  • lesson is, never to try ( Homer Simpson )

  • This made me cry. Sometimes what we as humans can do shocks me to the core. I just hope nothing like this happens again. RIP to the victims of Jonestown.

  • Adolf Hitler,Charles Manson,Jim Jones, David Koresh,Ayatollah,Osama Bin Laden....wonder what's the connection is!

  • Jim jones is a fucking maniac, i wanna bring him back to life, shit down his throat, squash his balls with a sledgehammer and rip his head off.

  • Cults. Control. Take all your money. A megalomaniac. Is there a manual for religious cults because they all seem the same.

  • They should make this a compulsory viewing for the entire Bible Belt.

  • Jim Jones's death was the only suicide.

  • Very sad... and I see some people on Youtube with this same type of spirit. We must fight the enemy.

  • Tragedies like this will keep happening as long as we do not recognise the anti-humanitarian incitations in the ancient writings of the 3-headed monster of Christianity/Islam/Judaism.

The 3-headed monster is dominating politics and policies in more and more countries .. Jim Jones's deadly legacy is well and alive as other incarnations in the form of other Islamic/Christian leaders who wants to create a religious state over the earth ..

..WAKE UP , HUMAN RACE !

  • let me guess? did jim jones shoot himself?

  • ok its sad how some people dont understand the human brain at all....look pspecho the human mind is a easy thing to manipulate. these people were isolated for a long period of time by someone who was calculating, and insane. they even explained it themselves why they thought why they did what they did in the documentary. if u were put in that environment for a period of time, being sleep deprived manipulated into thinking a certain way then i bet u would have been the first one to take the drink

  • I wonder what flavor of Kool-Aid they used? Did the Kool-Aide man make an appearance?

  • They used flavoraid not koolaid they made an error.and how could they think drinkingf cyanide was the easy way out?

  • What a tragedy...

  • koolaid any1..?

  • @nrg1901 no im goiing back to water...lmbo

  • @nrg1901 U dirty Bastard... :)

  • Mr Eugene Smith, you are a fucking shithead retard...you lost your whole family there and 20 years later you're still trying to explain how you tried to change things for the best, even if the result was a tragedy like this one? Wow, I wonder why you havent got any Nobel prize yet, cause such a brilliant mind deserves thousands of them...

  • @grenadewar Things aren't that simple... although why I'm explaining to this to people on the internet, I do not know.

  • @grenadewar I don't think it's immoral or stupid to want better for the world. Jonestown didn't happen in a vacuum, the world created it. He did try, he just failed. Failure doesn't even seem like a strong enough word, but the note was write to say that everyone there died trying to make things better. All we can hope is that people learn from these mistakes so that nothing like this EVER has to happen again.

  • @grenadewar u have to think that when u're in a group, beleiving that u can change the world.. for so long, after years and years and years with a family that u've given everything up for, and to move with them, and to be with them every single day for years on buses for trips, on a movement to a new land, and throu all the parties and gathering, that it does something to u. He was meaning what wuld happen if 'it worked out'. Wht if Jim was shot in the head at the start..? It wouldve been better

  • @grenadewar are you stupid? he was quoting jim's suicide note

  • Comment removed

  • @grenadewar You don´t really make this world a better place do you. Using word slike shithead retard. If you paid close attention he admitted that they obviously failed.

  • @grenadewar: As someone who didn't experience the tragedy or has probably never come close to experiencing something as terrible as this, who the hell are you to have the sheer arrogance to tell someone who experienced Jamestown how to cope with it? Eugene Smith lived every single moment of that tragedy and will be haunted by it for the rest of his natural life; you just watched an hour and a half documentary on it on the internet! Wow, big deal!

  • @atomicgirlnyc I dont wanna teach or tell anything to anybody who was there: we're only sharing our opinions on videos we watch on the internet, that's true, so you can agree or disagree with me, but still we're doing the same thing I guess! I admit my comment was very harsh, but I was kinda shocked by the fact that he still seemed to justify the whole thing, even 30 years after it and, most of all, after having lost his whole family there. Does it sound better this way? ;)

  • It makes me sick, how these people can believe this crazy man.He had the right intentions at first, but he just became more crazy. So sad how all these people just killed them self's or were forced to. It is also terrible many people died without knowing the wrong doings of Jim Jones.

  • My heart hurts for the survivors. I can't imagine continuing to live my life without my loved ones, especially if I had to see them die that way. Like, where do they find the strength to go on? Damn.

  • jim jones died by assfuck of his sons

  • FUCK JONESTOWN AND ANYONE WHO BELIEVED IN THE PHILOSPHY AND PHYSICAL EMBODYMENT OF JONESTOWN/JIM JONES.

  • to all of you saying that those who died and witnessed death were stupid u dont realize that they were going to be shot anyway if they did not drink the cyanide or they were injected with poison. so imagine being in a place where you damned if you do and damned if you dont.

  • @musikchic I'd choose to die fighting but then again I'm not weak minded enough to get sucked into a cult!

  • @musikchic Like the people that jumped from the World Trade Center on 9/11... either burn to death/die from asphyxiation or jump. Just trying to create a metaphor for the retards that don't get it.

  • As a father of the beautiful son which is a sun of my life - I just don't understand, just can't, how the father can kill or allow someone else to kill their sons like some fukking rats??? This is just absolute nightmare - how anyone can just keep saying they at least tried? Tried what? To be completely STUPID like a sheep?

  • that day the devil rejoiced as he opened his doors to hell and said, this is a happy day for me come on all 909 of you, your souls are mine. Jim jones just took those poor people straight to hell.

  • It is fine for us now to type that they should have risen up and done something, done anything. But we were not there and cannot know what it was like to live under and around a man like Jim Jones. Not only that, if you saw your children and family dying around you, would you want to go on? Who knows what we would do today if we were in the same, or similar situation.

  • @metrx330 A year ago you wrote "Religion"...God is my master..I am a Catholic...God died for us, he died so that stuff like this won't happen..This isn't religion's fault...This is the Devil's job not religions

  • @coo446 The Devil is within Religion.

  • I am a devout Catholic and 10 years ago, I was in a very fanatic youth ministry. We ended up becoming so fanatic to the point where we refused to report sexual abuse because it was "the devil trying to break us apart" . We were so brainwashed that we all moved from SoCal to Idaho w/o permission because we had a "duty to spread the light that was lit in us". We did so many illegal things and I didn't do anything about it. Now I know better and I will never let this happen again in my church.

  • @popdani First of all this happened in Africa, you fool. Second of all, things like this have happened all around the world throughout history for all kinds of different reasons. Stop spouting sensationalist bullshit.

  • @MrEarlander Actually this happened in South America, get YOUR facts straight before YOU start spouting bullshit. May i refer you to the wiki good sir?

  • @popdani Yeah I realized that about two minutes after I posted haha - nonetheless, it didn't happen in the USA.

  • @popdani One thing is religion, another thing is a crazy man that brainwashes people who just wanted peace, SO I DONT TOLERATE YOU CALL RELIGION A BULLSHIT, WHEN IT ISNT.

  • @Kisolee yes it is, religion is the root of all evil, without religion there would be almost no war. so ask yourself ; what is more important? peace on earth or 10 different religions, all praying to an imaginary god fighting who is the ''truest religion''

  • @popdani What war? what peace? religion isnt the cause, its the ambition and egoism of people, ask your self? how hell in earth could cause wars? Btw, what you could know about peace? when removing religion could cause peace? no.Could removing religion remove the weapons and tanks? no. Could removing religion remove insurgent illegal groups? no. Could removing religion remove violence and rapes? no

  • @popdani Without religion there would be almost no war? Not really. People fight because they have different ideas or they want something someone else has. If religion was removed, people would just find the next thing that makes other people different from them, and they would kill them over that.

  • @popdani you mean, let this be a lesson to all that CULTS bring nothing but bullshit! Religion: Catholicism, Christianity, Buddhism, etc. does not teach this at all! know the difference!

  • @popdani This was no religion. This was a meaningless cult in which people were brainwashed with Jones' shit.

  • @popdani

    fuck you

  • @popdani You couldn't be more wrong. Let this be a lesson that people can be horrid, and when they are, they can use anything and everything as a weapon. Jim Jones vehemently denounced the Bible and look how he ended up. If he had taken its words to heart instead of throwing it across a room, this story would be different. I agree with you that the phrase "God bless America" should be thrown out of our speech. America should bless God instead.

  • @popdani This can happen anywhere. That it happened in America makes no difference. Also you can not blame one man's madness on an entire people.

  • @popdani don't tie your personal distain for America into your views on a suicide cult you ignorant fuck, confused people come from all walks of life, all places of the earth

  • @popdani You're a dumbass. Care to explain Stalin? Hmm.. Yeah, you're a fucking goon.

  • Pathetic. Any person (adult, family member, friend, etc.) that led their family to being apart of this Jonestown tragedy but survived due to whatever circumstances should kill themselves out of shame. It's heart-breaking that so many children and infants lost their lives there. Surviving adult members should have been executed.

  • this is what happens when u have a town full of pussies.

idiots should of rose up against those bastards and mobbed them. who cares if they have guns, they wouldn't be able to kill everyone. And at least they would of died on their feet instead of their knees

  • there was no xbox back then . they got nothing to do .

  • This was MKULTRA gone completely haywire. What happened there was tragic. And it still holds water to this day. However I believe this was "loose change" compared to what happens on a daily basis now. Fuck Washington! And fuck elitist scum that thrive on the blood of people all over the world. If you think this was just some random nut job cult leader like Vernon Howell, well then line up and pick your flavor. Makes me sick.

  • You know you can't help but wonder why these "survivors" never stopped even their family members, or am i missing something here?

  • this is exactly whats going to happen when the anti christ comes. The sign of the beast is the deception. Be aware who you follow

  • This is the scariest thing I've seen in my life O.O ...I can't even......

  • God suck dicks

  • A basic tenet common to religions is non-violence, no killing. We live in the society of hypocrites and murderers. Over 50 mil. babies killed by abortion, growing numbers daily. Are you doing anything about it?

Yes, many people are less intelligent, same with children, or animals, but there is no justification for cruelty or killing them. Psychopaths/serial killers have a lot in common; they often start by killing and/or torturing animals- Are you like one of them or, are you a vegetarian?

  • all i gotta say is WHAT THE FUCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thr brainwash continues today in the form of marketing ect... its hard to feal bad when none seams to notice tv the lies the decit continues.

  • its just fucking tragic. That's all I can say is that. All those children. How could some one let some one kill their child? Stupid people follow stupid men.Brain washed just like those poor kids at west boro baptist. Its just sad.

  • but the ones who didn't die, obviously they didn't take the poison, but why? why wouldn't they stop their relatives? i know they were weak and all brain-washed but still, what the fuck. I can't even imagine the pain and how traumatized these people are, in a way, with this fact alone they died too, this would screw anyone's life forever.

  • Why not have a museum of cults? Or at least a Jonestown memorial museum?

  • 2:25-3:22 did most of the relatvies of these people interviewed in this program die willingly? Not to be callous, at all but were they already too brainwashed by Jones' megolamania to think for themselves? I feel sorry for all the people of Jonestown who lost relatives. I wish there was something I could do for them.

  • I feel so so so so bad for all those kids!!!! I can't believe the adults would stay when he proclaimed himself as God!? First thing That would of a came to mind to me what have bean Anti-Christ. I really hope people watch this so this part of history never repeats it's self.

  • @MeLlamoEddie There really should be museum of cults somewhere in the U.S.A. to make people and children realize the dangers of joining a cult like Jones' Peoples' Temple. It maybe an unpleasant place to visit when dealing with an unpleasant subject. But look at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.? That is a museum dedicated to the most horrofic period history and yet over a million people visit it a year.

  • Very sad, i feel for those poor chlidren who were killed, and Christine Miller, she was a brave woman.

  • This is what happens when people from San Homosexual vote for the Democrats

  • Jim Jones is in hell with Hitler and George Carlin. This is where all socialism leads. They should air this once a week.

  • @Erik0072 Hey hey hey no need to lump Georgie in with those devils!

  • Never ever lose your rationality, never lose your scepticism, nor your intrigue or inquisitiveness. Never lose yourself to a man whether it be Obama or Beck.

  • if only they would've seen the deception and believed in the One True God rather than the teaching of this man. my heart hurts for them. My stomach is sick with the reality of this.... and my prayers are with the surviving members who are hurting so much.

oh, people, rise up and go to Jesus!
