  • I think the real legit complaint is games that make it LOOK like they offer choices but then punish you for not picking the one they wanted you to pick.

So it's not the fact that they're linear, it's that they pulled a bait and switch on you.

  • Bioshock ain't that linear

  • @srdjan455 yeah it issssssssss kindaaa. :P

  • @MONOxHAND I must have confused linear with corridor linear

That or I need a better understand of definition of linear

  • what is the music that plays after the intro?

  • As for the "people not knowing what the fuck they're talking about", part of it is "Quoting Yahtzee to sound cooler". You visit the Escapist, you probably know what I'm talking about. Yahtzee can probably start saying sexuality is unnecessary and everyone with sexuality is stupid, and the forums will be full of people proudly proclaiming themselves to be celibates above the influence of sex or saying they were always asexual.

  • Starcraft 2 is a perfect example of this :/

  • Deus Ex has about 5x more complex and deeper story than half-life 2, and it was NOT linear. Jimqui, there's a difference between a linear STORY (no problem with that), and linear LEVEL DESIGN (all problems with that). This time you turned out to be the one who doesn't know what the F is he talking about ;)

  • @MidnightSt Deus ex was pretty linear, maybe not as much as half-life but its still far more linear than your average open world game. The best games are usually one with brilliantly written narrative with gameplay that gives the illusion of freedom. you feel like you choose you own path but you really don't. That's what Deus ex accomplished. System shock 2 (and by extension Bioshock) are other good examples of this.

Also, remember that he said it works with most games, not all.

  • @Otacon1105 "linear" and "open-world" are two extremes. i KNOW Deus Ex was not open world, but despite that, it's level design WAS NOT linear. Same goes for System Shock 2. That's actually my point - that you can have LINEAR STORY played out in NON-LINEAR levels (notice the word "LEVELS" - i'm not talking about open-world games, but about games divided into levels). Another good example would be Thief 3. those all do what you said - give you non-linear levels that are not open-world, but

  • @Otacon1105 ...but are complex/non-linear enough to give you a very solid illusion of almost total freedom, while maintaining solid/linear storytelling. as i said, i have no problem with "you HAVE to get from A to B", but if the path between those two points is just a curved line, it is 1. unnecessary, 2. lazy, 3. restricting, 4. bad. i just want "dead branches", multiple paths in a level, i want the environment feel like a world, not cardboard movie stage. half-life 2 fails in this.

  • @MidnightSt the problem in the concept of open world for the sake of it is that it draws attention to the less open portions of the game. IE "I can open every other door in the game why not this one" "why is their a general boundary to the map" the realism highlights the unrealism *see uncanny valley

  • @SURPLUSNiNjA and that's supposed to mean that "i can't open ANY door" is better? it's not. the problem in the concept of open world is mainly money, that it costs a lot and you are creating content that is not strictly necessary for the main plot. developers are getting kind of lazy and savvy in this way, because they have to waste more and more resources (time&money) to just keep up with graphics level of everything else.

  • i to would have sex with vanquish

  • i love when he whines about people whining.

  • @LudusVan Although I do agree that linearity can be quite useful when trying to tell a story. I just wish he could ease back on the pretentiousness when trying to make a point.

  • The bias in games is amazing.

"cod has terrible ai and its very easy and linear."

So is half life 2 but you like that game dont you?

"mw3 is mw 2.5" sos were doom 2, fallout 2 and diablo 2 and those are some of the best sequels ever.

  • @au25 Comparing the HL2 AI to the call of duty AI? Seriously?

  • @bf2lover42 more serious than ever but some people are fucking retarded cod haters and fucking dipshits.

HL2 ai does this, they see you they start shooting while standing still, if you get close they might actually bash you with their rifles.

In cod they shoot, take cover, come out when you are reloading, throw grenades and if you shoot them to the leg while running they fall down.

So yeah cod ai> hl2 ai and half life has better ai than any fps in the last 8 years, this is what we came to.

  • @au25 I am sure you either skipped the whole HL2 or I had a mod installed and didn't know. Because while there were bugs, enemies didn't behave like you mentioned.

And in Call of Duty I saw friendlies and enemies aiming at distant enemies while they were facing each other, or crouching in the same wall etc.

  • @bf2lover42 what do they do instead? make a fucking sandwitch?

In mw3 the ai and gunplay are far better than hl2, they duck attack when you reload, strafe, fall down when shot , get back up, throw grenades when you hide and the guns have recoil and sway, i actually coudlnt hit them from long range and had to get close, hell i shot them multiple times in small bursts... in the campaign!!

  • I don't actualy care for Bioshock, Half-Life 2 or... well ok I did enjoy Final Fantasy games.

  • why do i get the impression this guy is wearing wellies?

  • What the fuck is this shit?

  • Jim is growing on me.When he's not in character he makes some good points.I do think he should lose a little weight though. Not because I care about what he looks like, but because he sounds permanently out of breath. It takes me out of his reviews because he sounds so strained.I also worry with belaboured breathing like that he's going to have a heart attack.Get fit,Jim so u can lead a long healthy life and stick it in the eye of gamers who are wankers.

  • moan about linearity = call of duty best selling franchise..... how the fuck did that happen?

  • hahaha ! best drawing to emphasize a point ever 3:26

  • Linearity is pretty BS concept. GTA is supposedly "non-linear" because it's open world? Umm, you still play the story missions in the same order, they still play out the same way every time, you still start and end at the same place via the same path, how is that non-linear? Freedom is more important. Most people would say Halo is a strictly linear game, but there's freedom in how you approach every situation. MGS is the same way. GTA and RDR have relatively little freedom in missions.

  • @TakashiMiike17 Yes, but you see, I personally find that when I play a game and follow the missions, I get lost in the freedom that the game provides. For example, in Grand Theft Auto, I may be doing a couple of missions, and suddenly I'm fighting police while shooting down 50 Cent's worst enemy: helicopters. Also, if there's "freedom" in Halo, then there must be freedom in other FPS games if you can take any approach within the game mechanics. I respect your opinion, I hope you understand mine.

  • @Catastrogue regarding freedom in other fps, there is, some. Halo does a much better job of this than, say, Call of Duty. Halo tends to be designed with variety in mind, whereas in most action games there's usually one obvious strategy. I do see your point, but I think it's possible to have a tight narrative in a game and still allow player freedom. Deus Ex is a pretty decent example that I've been playing recently.

  • I lol'ed hard at Sir Winston

    "Oh im such a f*cking c*nt!"

  • Well, Resident Evil and Silent Hill are necessarily linear games. You had to explore Silent Hill to find out where to go next, and the same thing applies to Resident Evil. But yeah, too many people complain about linearity in video games. If you prefer free roaming that's fine, but don't bash the shit out of other games just because the developers thought the concept of the game would be best if it was linear and told you where to go!

  • 3:35. that was music from ''kirby right back at ya''.

i feel bad that i recognized it.

  • linearity doesn't MAKE a story. having side missions BREAKS it. imagine playing for example TES:O. you're all caught up in this epic quest and then in the middle of it, you're asked to do all this ridiculous stuff. the story is still great but it doesn't feel epic when you can just take a break from stopping invading demons to work your way up into for example the fighters guild. suddenly the story seems not so urgent and that kills it.

  • Morrowind Music for Sir Winston Q Prick = Win!

  • Jesters of the Moon, fuck yeah

  • open world games should be banned because...well...for the sake of banning:) "oh god i'm sucha fucking cunt!!"

  • I agree almost completely, but I just want to make a point: Games don't neccesarily have to be closed-in corridors to be able to tell a good story. My example for this is Deus Ex: You can go through the levels any way you want, and the levels are huge and full of choices, but this leads to (almost) the exact same place and result.

Whilst linearity is all good and it's sometimes nice to just run in a straight line shooting, I think there are too few games out there that do it Deus Ex style.

  • I dont play Linear games...

  • Mwamwamwamwa... oh i'm such a fucking C-

Sir Winston makes me laugh every time.

  • what is the opening music?

  • @Pentax25 'Born Depressed' by Drill Queen

  • Metal Gear mentioned in the same sentence as pinnacle of storytelling?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAA

  • people have talk enabled by default, and so the vast 95%iry of people dunno wtf they talk about or why are they dumb.(luckily typing isnt learned automaticall and so not everyone writes comments) No point in talking if you can't think, but people get distracted and think(or dont care) conversation equals brain activity.

  • AWESOM'A POWER THEME SONG!

  • MGS2 isn't linear at all. You go back.

    Wow you know fuck all.

  • @Ravepirate He was referring to MGS1 he never said anything about MGS2 so you're making baseless assumptions and/or putting words in his mouth.

  • @Ravepirate do you know what kind of linearity is meant?

  • @Ravepirate But metal gear solid 1 is.

  • @Ravepirate Back tracking =/= non-linearity, you (insert offensive putdown here).

  • Anyone else get that disgusting "worlds gonna end cause God loves you" ad?

  • The problem I have with open world games is I rarely, if ever, finish them. Too many distractions and too many boring missions that never end and follow the same structure. There is a reason that so many people never get very far in GTA.

Sure there are open world games that are great but I just don't think they have the ability to have a cohesive narrative that a more linear game can have, in most cases.

  • The only free roam non linier game that i can think of that had a very well written story and did just as good at telling it as the games you bring up in the video is Read Dead Redemption. With that being said L.A. Noir could also be falling into this catagory soon too.

  • Remember that nonlinear Wolfenstein game? Yeah . . .

  • Erm.... Are those sunglasses you're wearing or hugely dilated pupils from all the coke you've just snorted?

  • And why the hate with FFXIII? Damn it too late :(

  • Winston is indeed a prick! But Winston clearly shows the obvious nature that the majority of the 'New Gamers' this generation is bringing, is filled with illogical dumbfucks who can't comprehend simple fucking English or use common sense! Same people are the ones that can't grasp why piracy is theft and such

  • im still digging the winston Q Prick morrowind music :D

  • lol at 2:45 with the "Caption Actions: Transcribe Audio" xD

  • I LOVE linearity and i frown every time i see a reviewer crying about a game that is not linear. Of course that doesn't happen in games like God of War because the same reviewer is lacking the balls to do it and the brain to realize the benefits of linearity.

  • say something bad about ANY valve game, Heavy Weapons Guy will KILL you, and gordon freeeman will headshoot your d*ckhead!

  • @HerrGubba Valve in an incompetent company run by a massive tub of lard who makes Jim Sterling seem that a starving Ethiopian child by comparison.

  • This cunt reminds me of matthew holness

  • @beefking69er This cunt reminds me off...

    ...Wait, nevermind. Trolls aren't memerable.

Great Jimquisition as always, Jimbo. Yes, I called you, Jimbo -- deal with it. =P

  • Certainly need diversity in the medium. I get quite annoyed when people think a game should be more like another game that they preferred. Although I think that video games as a medium that is much more open to the Tarantino style (not to say everything else should be excluded. I think that non-linear storytelling is something done best in this medium, looking at things like Majora's Mask, where the real story was sidequests. Still, agree.

  • Eeee! Final Fantasy 9 music, AND a good video with many solid points! =]

  • The derp is in this video. People who usually complain about linearity are usually talking about the lack of options presented in the game, not the way the story is being told.

  • the only game that doesn't follow this is red dead redemption, that game had a fantastic story that you wanted to see through to the end

  • Now that I think about it, a open world Half-Life would be awesome.

  • Hate to say it, but Jim's starting to look like Garth Marenghi. Especially the hair.

  • Ah Jim never ceases to amaze me, although it would greatly appease me if he did these rant with a glass and or bottle of wine like back in the day when we used to get pissed watching King Krude play FFVII for he 300th time :), and what GREAT acting he has accomplished here! XD

  • Hes a bit of a dick......

  • I chuckled, but it's a good point.

And now to thumbs up that comment above for that Winston Q Prick guy.

  • Heard the Oblivion soundtrack when "Sir Winston" was talking :)

  • Hardcore porn @ 3:26 .

  • Inspector Gadget ftw!

  • Sterling only in name.

  • yes, the GTA games are not linear, because you can reach the ending with larger muscles and more colorful shirts

  • Trench Coat Mafia in affect on this video.

  • One recent Fps that was pretty much an on rails shooter has to be CoD Blops. The massive amount of scripting and very narrow corridors you move around in makes it so whenever I play or watch someone else play, the camera angles and perspective on the action is al

  • When I first saw/heard "on rails" I immediately thought, "Set on a train? What's wrong with that?" But that's just because I'm a derp. Jim has a valid point - there's nothing wrong with linear games for those who like a good story. Personally I don't think there's such a thing as too linear either. If something was completely linear, you'd be watching a movie instead of playing a game.

  • I too have been having a bone to pick with those constantly bashing linearity in games. I think FF13 really started it up, with that pretty much introducing the word to some people. I completely agree with Jim's statements and all; hope in the future we can start making more linear games with actual branching paths like Deus Ex. For many franchises though, that doesn't work, but many are great as they are.

  • this DERP needs some HERP i completely agree, with you Jim.

  • Red Dead Redeption is too linear!

  • Minecraft isn't linear :D so people that want open world can just STFU and play that :D

  • I believe sterling should start filming his videos in front of a green screen and put in epic waterfall vistas as the background.

  • l know right! people say "linear" about a certain game like its a mistake or something. "uhaa this game is linear go fix it"

  • Give Winston Q. Prick (who is definitely not Jim Sterling) his own show.

  • Life is to linear. Fuck life

  • @Tacobot2017 How is it linear? You can eat a doughnut, or go to the gym! You can snort some crack, or donate to a charity! Make your own story homeslice :)

  • real life is too linear

  • @UncleBibby47 "Not funny" is an objective opinion about a subjective thing. Several people enjoyed Sir WInston Q. Prick (who is obviously a real person and not Jim Sterling) so to emphatically state your opinion as fact is wrong.

Unless we ever talk about Jeff Dunham, who is scientifically unfunny.

  • @DTOID I'm not gonna write "the following is my opinion and can never be fact" every I say what I personally believe.

I wrote "he's not funny" because that is the only conclusion my brain can pull from this video, besides the "excellent journalist" thing and the "articulate" thing, both of which I now regret thinking.

  • @UncleBibby47 It's okay if you think he's not funny. I find Jim hilarious. Also, I love how he doesn't take himself seriously, something most video game "journalist" should learn how to do now-a-days. in my OPINION Jim is the savior of the stale, boring, flaccid, repetitive and uninspired writing of the so called video game "journalism".

  • @DTOID I do wish, however, that some games are more like Doom. That would be awesome.

  • @DTOID Nobody stated their opinion as fact. He simply shared his opinion that the video wasn't funny. Remember, opinions don't stop being opinions just because someone doesn't redundantly remind you that their opinion is an opinion.

  • @DTOID UncleBibby has a point

i agree with almost ALL of your videos and enjoy them

    but he is kinda right

  • Comment removed

  • @DTOID Sterling is a piece of shit who insults fanbases for views.

  • @VerendumProductions Usually I see him attacking people who dislike a certain thing, not like it. Ergo, not fanbases. Any examples?

  • @Catastrogue The Sonic fanbase. Sweet Jesus, these poor folks in the Sonic fanbase.

  • @VerendumProductions He did that in one video. It seemed more like you were making him out to only do that. But yeah, he did diss Sonic, Fallout, and Diablo fans. But mostly Zelda fans. Frankly I think most of them deserve it.

  • @Catastrogue And why is that?

  • @VerendumProductions Because they complain about Skyward Sword looking like "shit" when the same fans complained about Twilight Princess and The Windwaker. Zelda fanboys are impossible to please, despite their games always being good (except the CD-i games). At least Sonic fans get shitty games. The only other fans I attack are the Devil May Cry fanboys, who act like DmC by Ninja Theory is shitty, have never played it, and act like DMC has had good writing to begin with.

  • @Catastrogue I agreed with everything but the Sonic bit. Sonic's last 3 games have been good.

  • @VerendumProductions Yeah, I think the last two (Sonic Colors and Sonic 4) were good. When you say three, you mean to include Sonic Unleashed? I only really liked the day-time levels.

Honestly, I have to say, I gotta give you props for being a pretty intelligent person on YouTube. We are become increasingly extinct.

  • @Catastrogue By last three, I was including the better-than-expected Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing.

And yes, we are getting very low in numbers.

  • @DTOID However, I agree with you that UncleBibby shouldn't state his opinion as fact.

  • @DTOID "oh am such a fucking cunt"

    I laughed my ass off.

  • @UncleBibby47

Wasn't the unfunny Winston was unfunny just to underline the purpose of his sighting in his video?

  • @UncleBibby47 Agreed.

  • I love non-linear games, but I have nothing against linear ones; I just usually prefer open-world RPGs and such.

And Killzone 2 is on-rails?! Really? Who in the right mind would say that?

    /sigh

  • jim sterling is my hero.

  • Comment removed

  • Now I feel like playing Oblivion lmao..

  • was this video in reply to some random troll commenter, or was the guy that said Resistance is on rails somebody important/generally logical?

  • Thumbs Up for Sir Winston Q Prick!

  • I <3 LINEAR GAMES

  • A good example will be the Burnout series. The series was brilliant across 1 to 3, Revenge, Dominator and Legends. Problem arises in Paradise (haha). The game was always about going through a set path as fast and destructive as possible. With Paradise, another additional worry is added which is navigation. After prolonged play time its not much of a problem but it was taking away from the experience that was truly Burnout. Just one example of how linearity actually makes a game work.

  • Well said. I myself really enjoy linear games, it's like taking part in a great film if the story is done well enough.

  • The new music is great! :D

  • killzone 2 wasn't a on rail shooter it just sucked big time

  • jim yo the man dawg

  • When will you get a better mic? ):

  • @Mobileunit Probaly when he stops breaking them each video.

  • Super Mario is too linear!

  • haha youre the king XDD

  • Needs moar Sonic Plushie Rape

    Joking

    Another good one Jim!

  • Oh, Jim Sterling; don't ever change

  • I completely agree
