Nice!!! You are gonna love that in there. I have the second one of the DTM shrouds ever built, 13 years and still works great. Just built a 2.8, vid is on here check it out if interested.
Hey man, I have a 1972 Bus with a 1700 Type 4 in it. It's a champ, I've owned it for 2 years, and I'll never get rid of it. I'm adjusting the valves, and installing all new gaskets (oil pan, heads, carburetor, etc.), and mine puts out a sweet 102 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. I love my Volkswagen! I have mostly bolt-on power-adders, like dual 44mm Webers, a good turbo muffler, brand-new 4-1 headers (1-inch each header to the 2 and a half inch muffler). Your Type 181 is AWESOME!
It dyno'd to 170 (188 with the alternator/fan belt removed), but that was with an A-1 4-1 exhaust setup. Now I'm running a Tangerine 4-2-1 system that usually adds between 10 and 20 hp to these engines on the dyno. So, it's probably somewhere between 180 and 190. Quite a lot of fun in a 2000 pound car. I've yet to take it to a strip and find out the 1/4 mile time, but it'll take most street cars off the line from red-light-to-red-light - no smoke, only a little squealing, big launch!
Yes, I can understand why you went for that engine. I just purchased a 74 Thing with a stock 1600 cc engine and I fear it may be dangerously slow putting out less than 50 hp.
I drove this car for over 10 years with the stock engine. It's a HUGE improvement. Note that when a car company says something like "50hp", it doesn't mean that the engine will actually make that in a car - that's 50hp with everything stripped off of it and tuned for max HP - unrealistic. This engine dyno'd at those numbers with almost the same configuration as it sits now. It's probably fair to say that it's quadruple the stock HP. I did several of upgrades to the car to support this HP.
Disk brakes (soon to be on all 4 wheels), stiffer front springs, caster shims (to stabilize the steering), new larger fuel line, rotary fuel pump, canister fuel filter to match the pump, reinforced tranny (super diff, HD side cover, welded 3rd & 4th, freeway flier), welded frame horn seams (to strengthen the engine mounts), modified a "Bugpack Torque bar" to fit and installed it (to add additional strength to the engine mounts)...
...replaced the tranny mounts with Rhino mounts, added a tranny mid-mount (to better hold the tranny in place), added an oil cooler with fan up next to the tranny, installed an oil filter in the engine compartment, installed a Mallory electronic ignition unit (mostly for the rev limiter), added a few gauges (tach, oil press, oil temp, CHT), and completely rewired the engine compartment for all the new components.
You don't have to be crazy like me unless you want it radically faster. If you want just a little faster, you can knock off a bunch of these upgrades. Don't skimp on steering or brakes though.
Is there and information, guidance about putting a type 4 into a thing, written out there?

About how much horsepower does that put out?

Cool, could you list the upgrades needed? This is my first really slow car and I might need to do somthing like what you have done.

In Youtube's 500 chars? Well:

It is the self-same engine. He sold it to me in Sacramento last year, we pulled it from the "Plague" and I carried it home.
