This is why once she turns into a giant and has Triton as an 'unfortunate soul' she completely stops caring about him and making tidal waves that would ultimately drown him. She only wants to ensure Ariel is turned into an unfortunate soul through the curse so that she'll have her as leverage against Triton and can arrange to rule the seas. Moot once she turns Triton.

She only wanted to marry Eric, so Eric wouldn't kiss Ariel so Ariel would turn back into a mermaid, and have her as her slave. Knowing that Triton loves Ariel very much, Ursula knew that Triton would go and rescue his daughter, and do anything Ursula asked which was for him to give her all the power to the seas along with the trident.
