I really love this movie. This is a biography of Marie Antoinette...even though not a completely serious or historically accurate one....Kirsten Dunst did a great job. She is talented but so underrated nowadays. Other actors/actresses were great as well.
Sofia made a gorgeous looking film. I just wish she hadn't tried to lure a younger audience by using a trendy rather than historically accurate soundtrack. She might have been a terrible queen, but living in a life and luxury of how the French did back then, would've eventually gone to one of their heads. And sadly, it was Marie Antoinette. You can't blame her for not being tempted, really. I mean, she is the exactly replica of what we are doing in this economy now.

Oh yeah, the American Trailer was good but I think that fan part would gave it an extra touch. Kirsten is so teeny in this movie, loved her performance.
I did some research because I was a little ignorant about what did happen to the children. You're right, the son died of pneumonia secondary to his poor living conditions in prison. They actually kept him in a cell directly beneath Marie Antoinette's so she could hear him cry and cough himself to death. However, little Marie Therese lived to be an old woman, married and had children.
While I do believe that he did have a cell under where Marie Antoinette and the royal women were, she couldn't have heard him dying because MA died almost two years earlier.
Yes, he died after Marie, but he was horribly sick (not to mention beaten and abused in every single way) and still dying. He definitely wasn't getting better.
I expected so much from this film, I expected a great modern movie set in the wonderfully interesting period that was regency. However I felt it moved far too slow, Sofia seems to dedicate more to the sumptious cinematography (excellent) than she does on story or mood, leaving it floundering until the audience couldnt care less. A pity. However, I want to give it a 2nd chance
good actress bad movie. They have ruin the subject in this movie. They have forgotten to mention the real problem and they don't show how the queen had been
She was 37 when she was executed. A child? They beheaded her and the King because they betrayed France by asking foreign troops to invade her, not because of their lifestyle.
What people mena when they refer to ehr as a child is not the age she died at but the age she became queen. She and her Husband were'nt prepped for the throne. She thought being a queen menat the same thing every 7 year old think being a queen means.
Because the peasants were betraying their King of and Queen. And was it nessacary to kill children? The revolutionaries were hardly hero's, they were monsters who then went on to ravage Europe. The Monarchy had been perfectly fine. It needed reform, yes, but that's what Louis XVI was trying to do. Despite the fact he was trying to help and do what the people wanted, the mob still killed him and his son, how heroic!
Spare me the romance, France is still great for the rich and bad for the poor.
Louis faile to act when he had been given mny opportunities. His involvement with the American War of Independance was one of many factors that caused France's bankruptcy in 1789. Also his parlement, who represented the 1st and 2nd Estates, were denying any laws he tried to make as an act of royal disobediance. Louis XVI's finacial mister Brienne nearly prevented the Revolution but Louis got impatient and messed it up causing the people to believe he had lost his benevolance and they revolted.
None of that justifies killing innocent women and children and then starting what was the worst wars ever fought at the time. Too much blood and spilled for "freedom", when this freedom never came. The Merchant and Capitalist classes were the one who benefited from the Revolution, not the poor or oppressed. It is also amusing to point out very many nobles SUPPORTED the revolution, yet again showing it wasn't a fight for freedom.
true the revolution was beneficial mainly to the bourgoisie but if louis had maintained control and prevented the philosophes from publishing quest-ce le tiers etats wouldnt hav been published and the third estate wouldn't have formed the National Assembly.
The French Revolution is as interesting as it was disgusting. The whole story is wonderful, I love it. It's my favorite part of history, second only to the American Revolution.
I loved the way this movie was made. It was excellent. I think that the modern music in the movie just made it even better. Lots of my friends told me that they think it was boring but it's my favorite :) Also, Marie-Antoinette had an American accent and the others had en English accent was to show that she was an outsider.
I completely agree. Sophia did marvels on Marie Antoinette. I can see myself in her place, yup. I don't know how I'd make it a month! lol, I appluade this movie.
Marie Antoinette was pretty much a teenager who became queen. Sofia Coppola did a great job of comparing her to todays teenagers. The modern music and logo show this, as well as making teens interested in this movie- it's not a documentary for adults, it's a movie for teens.
It's just Sofia's style. This is how she portrays the story. I thought it was brilliantly done. And as for the music, it added a total kick to the movie, which just like keighty8819 said, wasn't meant to be historically accurate, but be portrayed in the essence of a teenager.
How accurate would it have been with any other accent?
They're not British, and while they are French, speaking English with a French accent isn't accurate either.
Like omgfreakay said, it's nice how Sofia portrayed Marie Antoinette as an outsider with the accent.
And (not that you did this), but if people are going to complain about the historical accuracy of this film, it's not a big deal. That wasn't the point. The artistic aspect of "Marie Antoinette" was brilliant.
The converse shoes were put in by Sofia Coppola as a hint at two things: that Marie Antoinette was still very much a child, and that the film was not meant to be a historically accurate one for the most part. She was trying to portray Marie Antoinette as what she was: a young girl who ended up in a less than desirable position, and not just some two dimensional figure out of a history book.
Poor Marie Antoinette behind all that extravagance lifestyle she use to have. Deep inside of her there is a alone, lost, confused, naive child who is waiting for someone to rescue her.
I JUST LOVED IT!!Great performance by Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola did a great job too!I also liked the fact that they used modern music! The movie was a very interesting approach to a young womans heart!I felt so close to Marrie Antoinette and i totally understood her!
. If it were modern day people, looking at these scenes which convey their feelings, these scenes which bring them closer to you, would not be as wonderful. But the fact that its MARIE ANOINETTE that your understanding, MARIE ANTOINETTE that feels this way, that is relatable to you, is what leaves you in awe.
I wouldnt have liked it as much if it had classical music throughout. I do like classical music, and some movies with it, but the ONLY reason i liked this movie - since it had NO plot - is because of it's vision. Some of the shots leave you breathless, and with the music, its absolutely enchanting. These historical characters seem a little more human, a little more relatable, almost like you, and thats whats enchanting about it.
I agree. Marie Anoinette's life HAD no plot, she just lived each day in luxury. People get mad because nothing happened, but if anything did, they would get even more mad because they changed the history!
It's like, get over it people! You can't have it both ways!
The song is horrid. I don't care if the song is for "teens", I'm 13 and I really HATE it.
It sounds like American Folk music. I thought this movie was classical french. e__e I would have liked it a lot better if it was classical music. Geez.
Marie Anoinette wasn't a classical woman. She was falboyant beyond classical. Too bad her hairstyle wasn't on everyone until the early sixties! (Beehive)
hey, i'm 16 and this song is pretty good. Listen to the strokes song on the soundtrack--another good song, but it's modern. there's really not that much difference between the two as far as styles--neither is perceivably modern or 80's.
WTF? Really, I don't have anything other to say other than ditto archer1949, except with a little more sarcasm and emphasizing on the "teeny boppers" part.
I totally agree with Lannig1, people have been bitching about this movie even before it came out becuase it was "too modern". It's cinema people! Sofia Coppola wanted to make a movie that focuses on her feelings and she decided to put rock music because it's music for teens, and when she became a queen she was a teen so she wanted the music to relate to her but in a modern way, wich i think is very original and unique. A director has the right to do whatever he/she wants to do with their movie.
I don't agree with the the people who were bitching about the movie. I think that the reason why I think this movie is great is because it's modern. I don't know, I felt i could relate more rather than if it had classical French music, and everything was exactly the way it was supposed to be.
Ummm...it's called a director being creative and trying to put the whole of M.A.'s story into her perspective. You should try being creative sometime...and not defacing the English language! D<

First she was locked up in the Palace the tuilleries (in french) whit the whole family togheter.
Than they tried to escaped but get cought at the border.
So they locked her up again but then the people became angry and atacked the palace de tuilleries.
So they moved to the tempel (she and her children)
But then her children were taken away from here.
and after her trial they have locked her up in the conciergerie. ( everbody whit dead penalty was prisoned in the conciergerie)

I know! Her opening the fan at the end is my favorite part too! They should have put that in the American Trailer too. Kirsten Dunst can be so cute.
randomnessme1 3 years ago 2
Oh yeah, the American Trailer was good but I think that fan part would gave it an extra touch. Kirsten is so teeny in this movie, loved her performance.

I did some research because I was a little ignorant about what did happen to the children. You're right, the son died of pneumonia secondary to his poor living conditions in prison. They actually kept him in a cell directly beneath Marie Antoinette's so she could hear him cry and cough himself to death. However, little Marie Therese lived to be an old woman, married and had children.
Baltzley1 4 years ago 3
While I do believe that he did have a cell under where Marie Antoinette and the royal women were, she couldn't have heard him dying because MA died almost two years earlier.
thecleric007 3 years ago 3
I understood that Therese died old and alone.
312728JCK 3 years ago
Yes, he died after Marie, but he was horribly sick (not to mention beaten and abused in every single way) and still dying. He definitely wasn't getting better.

I expected so much from this film, I expected a great modern movie set in the wonderfully interesting period that was regency. However I felt it moved far too slow, Sofia seems to dedicate more to the sumptious cinematography (excellent) than she does on story or mood, leaving it floundering until the audience couldnt care less. A pity. However, I want to give it a 2nd chance

I agree with you,not quite what I was specting to see.

i love how they cast an american actress to play MA. it lends more to her youth and naivety.

She was 37 when she was executed. A child? They beheaded her and the King because they betrayed France by asking foreign troops to invade her, not because of their lifestyle.
vphuongdktdbk 4 years ago
What people mena when they refer to ehr as a child is not the age she died at but the age she became queen. She and her Husband were'nt prepped for the throne. She thought being a queen menat the same thing every 7 year old think being a queen means.
LunaSorchaVespera 4 years ago 2
Because the peasants were betraying their King of and Queen. And was it nessacary to kill children? The revolutionaries were hardly hero's, they were monsters who then went on to ravage Europe. The Monarchy had been perfectly fine. It needed reform, yes, but that's what Louis XVI was trying to do. Despite the fact he was trying to help and do what the people wanted, the mob still killed him and his son, how heroic!
Spare me the romance, France is still great for the rich and bad for the poor.
PurePerfection 4 years ago 4
yeah i TOTALLY agree!!! they really didnt need to kill the children and humiliate them or imprison them for that matter
TonksPinkHairedGirl 4 years ago 3
Louis faile to act when he had been given mny opportunities. His involvement with the American War of Independance was one of many factors that caused France's bankruptcy in 1789. Also his parlement, who represented the 1st and 2nd Estates, were denying any laws he tried to make as an act of royal disobediance. Louis XVI's finacial mister Brienne nearly prevented the Revolution but Louis got impatient and messed it up causing the people to believe he had lost his benevolance and they revolted.
ElectroChris69 3 years ago
None of that justifies killing innocent women and children and then starting what was the worst wars ever fought at the time. Too much blood and spilled for "freedom", when this freedom never came. The Merchant and Capitalist classes were the one who benefited from the Revolution, not the poor or oppressed. It is also amusing to point out very many nobles SUPPORTED the revolution, yet again showing it wasn't a fight for freedom.
PurePerfection 3 years ago 3
true the revolution was beneficial mainly to the bourgoisie but if louis had maintained control and prevented the philosophes from publishing quest-ce le tiers etats wouldnt hav been published and the third estate wouldn't have formed the National Assembly.
ElectroChris69 3 years ago
The French Revolution is as interesting as it was disgusting. The whole story is wonderful, I love it. It's my favorite part of history, second only to the American Revolution.

I think it's a great modern movie ... ;)it's a good way to show todays teenagers something about european history without books ...
fuqqedXpuppet 4 years ago
I loved the way this movie was made. It was excellent. I think that the modern music in the movie just made it even better. Lots of my friends told me that they think it was boring but it's my favorite :) Also, Marie-Antoinette had an American accent and the others had en English accent was to show that she was an outsider.
Great movie !
omgfreakay 4 years ago
I completely agree. Sophia did marvels on Marie Antoinette. I can see myself in her place, yup. I don't know how I'd make it a month! lol, I appluade this movie.
detroit7tigers7roxxx 4 years ago
Marie Antoinette was pretty much a teenager who became queen. Sofia Coppola did a great job of comparing her to todays teenagers. The modern music and logo show this, as well as making teens interested in this movie- it's not a documentary for adults, it's a movie for teens.
OperationFilm 4 years ago
It's just Sofia's style. This is how she portrays the story. I thought it was brilliantly done. And as for the music, it added a total kick to the movie, which just like keighty8819 said, wasn't meant to be historically accurate, but be portrayed in the essence of a teenager.
moviepyro667 4 years ago
The actors who spoke with American accents ruined the entire film!!
datheman3780 4 years ago
Well . . the protagonist is an American -__-x
They did do poorly in picking correct actors/actresses.
bbyCRiSSy 4 years ago
Not really. It was good Kristen Dunst spoke with and AMerican accent. But the other characters should have spoken in French accents.
detroit7tigers7roxxx 4 years ago
How accurate would it have been with any other accent?
They're not British, and while they are French, speaking English with a French accent isn't accurate either.
Like omgfreakay said, it's nice how Sofia portrayed Marie Antoinette as an outsider with the accent.
And (not that you did this), but if people are going to complain about the historical accuracy of this film, it's not a big deal. That wasn't the point. The artistic aspect of "Marie Antoinette" was brilliant.
xbrokenmodel 4 years ago
I pitty Madame Tusaaud. She had to make a wax-head right after Marie Antoinette`s head was chopped off.
slowedkalimero 4 years ago

Viviana007 4 years ago
. If it were modern day people, looking at these scenes which convey their feelings, these scenes which bring them closer to you, would not be as wonderful. But the fact that its MARIE ANOINETTE that your understanding, MARIE ANTOINETTE that feels this way, that is relatable to you, is what leaves you in awe.
swtlilsoni 4 years ago
I wouldnt have liked it as much if it had classical music throughout. I do like classical music, and some movies with it, but the ONLY reason i liked this movie - since it had NO plot - is because of it's vision. Some of the shots leave you breathless, and with the music, its absolutely enchanting. These historical characters seem a little more human, a little more relatable, almost like you, and thats whats enchanting about it.
swtlilsoni 4 years ago
I agree. Marie Anoinette's life HAD no plot, she just lived each day in luxury. People get mad because nothing happened, but if anything did, they would get even more mad because they changed the history!
It's like, get over it people! You can't have it both ways!

Marie Anoinette wasn't a classical woman. She was falboyant beyond classical. Too bad her hairstyle wasn't on everyone until the early sixties! (Beehive)

New Order sounds like "American Folk Music".......WTF? And it was recorded over 20 years ago. Not exactly for today's teeny boppers.
archer1949 4 years ago
hey, i'm 16 and this song is pretty good. Listen to the strokes song on the soundtrack--another good song, but it's modern. there's really not that much difference between the two as far as styles--neither is perceivably modern or 80's.
Atom1kYak 4 years ago
OK, so the song is not classical music, I'll give you that, but American folk music?!? LOL. This is post-punk music at its best kid.

A director has the right to do whatever he/she wants to do with their movie.
autobritish 5 years ago
I don't agree with the the people who were bitching about the movie. I think that the reason why I think this movie is great is because it's modern. I don't know, I felt i could relate more rather than if it had classical French music, and everything was exactly the way it was supposed to be.
