i think that's the dark humor of this video. Everyone knew that in the face of a nuclear detonation you either faced obliteration or damnation to a life of the resulting radiation sicknesses. Showing these films allowed the people a sense of control over their lives when nuclear threat was so close, but the people who made the videos knew it made no difference.

No you survive the awesome shock-weave emitted by the blast - it will give you time to evacuate before any nuclear radiation get's to you. In other words - taking cover during an atomic bomb explosion will buy you some time. The kinetic blast may be makes building crumble and anybody who is in sight of the explosion gets obliterated , the explosion itself is not that which causes the most deaths - nuclear radiation is , which usually travels in a relatively slow speed.

you and religion and science are both kinda close to being correct, but still wrong nonetheless. no offense to either of you. regardless of taking cover, if you're within 20 miles or so of a nuclear explosion the force of the explosion could easily crumble buildings and if you are in a city of any sort, you are surely dead, but i suppose there is always the 1 in 1000000000000 chance you survive and have 20 minutes to get to cover with food and water to avoid nuclear fallout

Indeed if you are that close to the blast then taking cover doesn't make much sense, but think about this, if a building gets destroyed from the blast...wouldn't you take cover, decreasing the chance that you'll get hit by any debris?
